HOUSTON -- Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners couldnt push an AL West rival down the wild-card standings.George Springer had three hits, including a two-run double during a six-run sixth inning, and the Houston Astros beat the Mariners 8-4 on Tuesday night. The victory leaves Seattle two games behind Baltimore for the second AL wild card and cuts Houstons deficit in the race to 2 1/2 games. The Astros got five hits off Hernandez (11-7) in the sixth, but only two of the six runs scored in the inning were earned because of two errors. The sixth inning obviously got us, manager Scott Servais said. We didnt finish off the inning. We didnt make a few plays that probably should have been made. The game was tied when Springer shot a ground-rule double to right field that made it 6-4. A two-run single by Marwin Gonzalez, which sailed just out of reach of a lunging Hernandez, chased the pitcher and left Houston up 8-4.I was still making good pitches, Hernandez said. The curveball was down, and it just blooped. I was fine. They just got lucky. The Mariners look to put this one behind them quickly with the postseason still within reach. We have to stay positive, Robinson Cano said. We need to erase what happened tonight. We still have a chance. A lot of things can happen in five games.Houston starter Mike Fiers allowed eight hits and four runs in five innings. Rookie Jandel Gustave (1-0) yielded no hits and no runs with one walk in 1 1/3 innings for his first career win.Hernandez tied season highs by allowing 10 hits and eight runs, four of them earned, in 5 2/3 innings. He gave up a couple in the first, but our offense rebounded and got him in a good spot, Servais said. Not wipe out stuff by any means, but he was pitching well and deserved a better fate.It was his second straight tough start in Houston after he yielded five hits and eight runs in a third of an inning of a 10-0 loss on June 12, 2015, to tie the shortest start of his career. He also struggled against Houston at home earlier this month when he allowed nine hits and six runs in 4 1/3 inning of a 6-0 loss to the Astros on Sept. 16.The Astros trailed 4-2 entering the sixth before Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa hit consecutive singles with no outs. Yuli Gurriel grounded into a force out that scored Altuve and left Correa out at second. Shortstop Ketel Marte made an error on the play that allowed Gurriel to reach first. Tony Kemp drew a walk before pinch-hitter Alex Bregmans RBI single tied it.Jake Marisnick then reached on an error by Lind before Springer and Gonzalez drove in two runs each.Servais thought that Lind beat Marisnick to first on that play, but replay confirmed the call.He was clearly out, Servais said. I looked at the replay. Im not sure what they are looking at in New York.TRAINERS ROOMAstros: Bregmans pinch hit in the seventh was his first action since leaving a game on Sept. 14 with a right hamstring injury. MILWAUKEE -- Once Zach Davies got going, the Arizona Diamondbacks didnt have much of a chance.Davies pitched 6 1/3 effective innings, Hernan Perez hit a two-run homer, singled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Diamondbacks 6-4 on Thursday.Davies is now 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA with four walks and 17 strikeouts in four starts in July.Hes had a bunch of starts like this, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. When he gets into a groove, he runs through the lineup pretty good.I was making sure I settled down a little bit and focused more, Davies said. Once the first inning is over, you let it go.Davies got some key run support for Perez, who started at shortstop for benched Jonathan Villar. Perez crushed Robbie Rays first pitch 458 feet off the facing of the scoreboard in deep center for the two-run homer in the third. That was huge, but I knew I had to keep it there and keep making pitches, Davies said of Perezs sixth home run this season.Davies (8-4) allowed three runs -two earned- on six hits. Burgos has got to be able to get that guy out and get us in the dugout. If the bullpen doesnt get squared away, Hale hinted at some changes. We have got to find some guys out of our bullpen that are going to stop the bleeding, shut it down, Hale said. Its imperative. If we cant find them here, were going to have to go elsewhere and give other guys a chance.Ray struck out five straight batters, including the side in the second and fifth innings and set a career high with 11 strikeouts, one better than in his previoous start, a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati on July 23.ddddddddddddVILLAR SITSBrewers SS Jonathan Villar was benched for a baserunning blunder in the first inning of Wednesday nights 8-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.
