LOS ANGELES -- Three existing venues have been added to Los Angeles bid for the 2024 Olympics, including Long Beach as one of four main sports clusters.LA2024 announced the additional venues Thursday, emphasizing its use of existing venues to avoid costly construction and cost overruns that have plagued Olympic host cities in recent years.Long Beachs arena, convention center, waterfront and pier would comprise one of four main sports clusters scattered around the Los Angeles area as opposed to having a single Olympic Park. The city joins the other clusters of downtown Los Angeles, the South Bay near Torrance and the San Fernando Valley. The LA2024 bid committee said each cluster will be located within a secure perimeter where fans can walk between venues with food, music and celebration sites. The clusters are connected to the regions public transit system. The venue changes will be included in LA2024s second bid file that is due to the International Olympic Committee on Oct. 7. The IOC will select the 2024 host city in September 2017. Los Angeles is competing with Paris, Rome and Budapest, Hungary.Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi on Wednesday rejected her citys bid, although her motion to withdraw the bid would have to be approved by Romes city assembly.Handball would be held in Long Beachs 13,500-seat arena, which recently underwent $10 million in upgrades, along with warm-up facilities at the connected convention center. BMX and water polo would be held in temporary facilities along the citys waterfront, where open-water swimming and triathlon would be held. Sailing would be near the citys Belmont Pier.Long Beachs venues are located 24 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The athletes village would be on the UCLA campus on Los Angeles west side.Honda Center in Anaheim would host indoor volleyball, bringing the Olympics to Orange County, with the 18,000-seat venue that is home to the NHLs Anaheim Ducks located about 26 miles from Los Angeles. It would be about an hour drive from the athletes village. In LA2024s original plans, volleyball was to be played at UCLAs Pauley Pavilion. Instead, that 13,800-seat basketball arena would host wrestling and judo.Historic Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles would host mens and womens golf. The course has hosted the U.S. Open, two PGA Championships and the annual PGA tournament since it opened in 1929.Adding sites in Long Beach and Anaheim would bring the Olympics closer to the large populations in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.LA2024 said UCLAs tennis center and north athletic field have been added to the track and field stadium as part of the training center located at the athletes village in an effort to reduce additional travel for competitors. Were very pleased to add more world-class existing venues to our fiscally responsible and innovative Games Plan for 2024, LA2024 chairman Casey Wasserman said. By relying on Southern Californias wealth of top sports, housing and transportation infrastructure, LA 2024 will minimize construction risk, operational struggles and costs, and can focus on providing athletes with the perfect stage to perform their best, without distraction. CLEVELAND -- After getting shut out in their first World Series game since 1945, the Chicago Cubs stressed it was no time to panic.Their at-bats were good, the Cubs insisted. The balanced lineup that propelled them to a National League championship and the best record in the majors was just a swing away.Three swings, as it turned out.The first by Kris Bryant with one out in the first inning Wednesday night, a sharp single to center field off Cleveland Indians starter Trevor Bauer that gave the Chicago dugout and the sea of blue-clad fans scattered throughout Progressive Field a needed jolt. The second came seven pitches later, a double to right from Anthony Rizzo that sent Bryant racing home with the Cubs first World Series run in 71 years. The third was in the fifth, a triple to right by Ben Zobrist that gave starter Jake Arrieta all the cushion he needed in a 5-1 victory that tied the Fall Classic at one game apiece heading back to Wrigley Field on Friday.Perhaps its only fitting the outburst was started by three players who represent the various stages of Chicagos renaissance under general manger Theo Epstein.Rizzo, the teams longest-tenured position player, endured 101 losses in his first season with the Cubs in 2012, a six-month bout of misery that led to Chicago taking Bryant with the second pick in the 2013 amateur draft. Bryants arrival in the majors last spring helped propel Chicago to 97 wins and a spot in the NLCS, leading Zobrist -- fresh off a championship with the Royals in 2015 -- to sign with the Cubs last wwinter.ddddddddddddThere the three were in the heart of the order Wednesday, scoring four of Chicagos five runs to move the Cubs within three wins of the franchises first World Series title in 108 years.Bryant went hitless in his first Series game Tuesday night, though he was hardly alone as the Cubs managed little against Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller and Cody Allen. The going wasnt nearly as tough against Bauer, who pitched with the pinkie on his right hand still recovering from a gash sustained while he was tinkering with a toy drone earlier in the playoffs.Bryant ripped a single up the middle on a 2-2 pitch in the first and scored on Rizzos double. It was Chicagos first run since the eighth inning of a Game 7 loss to Detroit in the 1945 World Series, a mere 44 years before Rizzo was born.Rizzo walked and Zobrist singled in the third before Rizzo scored on a single by Kyle Schwarber to make it 2-0. In the fifth, Rizzo led off with a walk and raced home on Zobrists hard triple into the right-field corner. Zobrist scored to make it 4-0 when Schwarber singled up the middle. All of a sudden, an October night in Cleveland on baseballs biggest stage felt like so many other games Chicago has played over the last six-plus months. Arrieta dominated, the lineup delivered and the crowd chanted Lets Go Cubs. All the way back to Chicago, where a chance to make history more than a century in the making awaits. ' ' '
