------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ajay and SRK’s toony tiff! Both Devgan and Khan are making films with eerily similar plots using special effects and animation
Shah Rukh Khan’s recent announcement in Variety magazine about producing an animated kiddie flick has stirred a hornet’s nest. According to the Ajay Devgan camp, the stories of SRK’s and Kumar Mangat’s animation film, Toonpur Ka Super Hero, are the same!
A source reveals that Ajay’s camp is miffed that Khan is going ahead with a project that is very similar to theirs in terms of ideation and plot. The similarity isn’t just about who the film is catering to, but also the treatment. Both the movies are using state-of-the-art effects and will have a video game feel.
Ajay’s angry
Apparently, Devgan was infuriated when Shah Rukh roped in Anubhav Sinha for the project. “Ajay has been conceiving Toonour Ka Super Hero even before he started work on U Me Aur Hum. In fact, during Cash, Ajay had discussed the project with Anubhav and now Anubhav is working with Shah Rukh on a suspiciously similar project.”
Kumar Mangat says, “I have heard that the stories of Anubhav’s film and Toonpur being similar. Some people in the trade have informed me but when I checked, I found out that Anubhav Sinha’s story is different. I know that he’s making an animation film but I am not sure if Shah Rukh has said yes to the film.”
Both Anubhav Sinha and Kumar Mangat are working at breakneck speed to complete their films they want to release their film first.
It’s a race
Mangat says, “I don’t know about Anubhav’s film but 80 per cent of our animation work has already been done. We will complete shooting by June and definitely plan to have a Diwali or Christmas release.
Doing an animation film is no child’s play. It takes months to work on a character — extensive knowledge and research.”
Crowded space
He continues, “Kirit is an experienced ad filmmaker with his own animation company. One wrong frame and the entire shooting gets wasted. We have been working on Toonpur since last 15 months and now only two songs including one with Ajay and Kajol need to be shot. Ajay and Kajol’s song is called Chal baliye chal Toonpur chaliye and will be shot with 5000 animated characters.”
Mangat is roping in noted animation specialist Charles Darby for TKSH. Kumar Mangat says, “We are in talks with a Hollywood technician who has worked with Steven Spielberg in his films. Everything will get finalised in a few days.”
When asked if his film is similar to TKSH Shah Rukh says, “No.”

Hier schon mal die wichtigsten Cartoon-Helden
What happens when Ajay Devgan lands in the land of cartoons? That's a Rs. 40 crore question posed by producer Kumar Mangat who recently embarked on his most ambitious project Toonpur Ka Superhero, India's first 3D Live Action Animation film directed by Adman, Kireet Khurana. Playing the reel life movie star, Devgan has his tremendously talented wife, Kajol, alongside him in what seems to be a fun trip of 'U Me Aur Cartoons'!
We at Bollywood Hungama got hold of a few animated characters from the film. Now, since we don't have any backgrounder on what the characters are meant to be in the film except their names, we put our own imagination and tried weaving brief poems to define each character in our own way. In a two part slideshow, we'll introduce you to some of the animated characters which have been created for this film. Hope you have fun with Guppy, Lappy, Loveena and gang!
Guppy There's a little bit of guppy in all of us Imagination guitar always creates a fuss Mischievous Pied Piper of rumours Miscommunication bird flutters Its itching-to-bitch wings, The naughty heart carelessly sings The idle notes of gossiping one hears A toothy smile is unleashed for it has no fears
Jaagaro I'm a distant cousin of Batman But I can do what Satan can The evil eyes gunning for an excuse To kill someone that's of no use When I fold my hands in anger Lightening strikes…a sign of danger I'm a vulture with the speed of an eagle A realist who believes in a life that's regal
Lappy A computer programmer from Chennai They call me Lappy, I don't know why I may be gawky but still I get the job done A beautiful mind that's seldom on the run My calculations are always spot on Lack of confidence is my only thorn I'm a man wedded to my traditions So what if I have a few inhibitions
Loveena The girl in Loveena wishes to be a lady soon A playful cloud over the misty moon Decorated with the brilliance of a starry night Like the morning dew sprinkled bright I’m a blooming flower dripping with pride Too much male-gaze, yet I search for a genuine guide He shall teach me lessons of love-n-life Who knows I may end up as his wife!
Pandu Maaila! My pagaar is so less Kharcha so much oh, God bless Naam hai Pandu, I do some herapheri At the traffic signal near Mother Dairy Free cab rides are the perks of profession Khaana peena, of course with concession When I take gajra for my lugai at night 'I love you ji,' she says, ah, my world is alright
Watch this space to meet Bolly, Beegben and others

No acting for me, I’m a behind the scenes guy Lots of work left guy, gotta go, bye!
Beegben Kem cho, saru cho… Maaro naam Beegben chhey I will throw away anyone and everyone coming my way No one dares to mess with me looking at my figure As it doesn’t take time for my anger to trigger. People say that I am like a coconut: outside hard, but inside soft, When it comes to my loved ones, I keep my ego and temper on the loft. Everyday, I love to prepare the sweetest of the sweet Without which, I feel so incomplete Do come to my home for lunch, dinner or breakfast Come fast as offer valid only till stocks last!
Ghandev I am Ghandev: India's answer to Casper, the friendly ghost People following discipline and punctuality impress me the most The difference between Casper and me is that, while he is sexy, I am specsy While I stay of Earth, he hails from the other galaxy! People call me by many names or simply as 'Dream Merchant' My solutions never fail to make people enchant Whenever in trouble, you can count on me like 1, 2, 3… Whatever be the matter/ trouble, I will surely set you free!
Prof Homi My dear friends, I am Homi, the Professor My friends call me Homes while my colleagues call me Sir! They say that I resemble someone called Isaac Newton It could be true coz' I have intellect by a ton! But mind you! Being Homi is not at all that easy, As my mind works faster than even the fastest PC! Let me 'reveal' one sacha sach, That my jhoru darling simply loves my moustache very much! She says that I can give the Bollywood villains a marathon run for their money No wonder! I call her Mrs. HONEY!!!
Ein Artikel über animierte Filme in Bollywood, zwei Artikel befassen sich mit Tonopur Ki Superhero
THROUGH A LENS, VIRTUALLY Suruchi Mazumdar Posted online: Sunday, March 02, 2008 at 1654 hrs
A warrior stands atop a medieval tower. His sword glistens and his majestic robe flutters in the wind. Then he dives in slow motion and takes on his enemies who die minutes later after some death-defying stunts. That’s Tamil superstar Rajinikanth, looking 20 years younger in his next film Sultan—an expensive animated full-length feature to be made by the actor’s daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth.
Sultan is among many animation movies currently being made in India. The culture that began with 2003’s surprise hit Hanuman, a cutesy 2-D cartoon for kids, has moved on to an adult genre with films like Sultan and other mainstream Bollywood productions like the Ajay Devgan-and Kajol-starrer Toonpur Ki Superhero, Yash Raj Films’ Roadside Romeo and Karan Johar’s Kootchie Kootchie Hota Hai (an animated remake of the blockbuster Kuch Kuch Hota Hai). Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment promises too. In filmi lingo, these are the biggest and commercially most viable names in the industry.
This year, the Indian animation industry got an ego boost thanks to Apurva Shah, the animator of Ratatouille, which won the Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category. Shah, who has his roots in Godhra, has also worked on other highly entertaining films like Shrek and Finding Nemo. So this is a good time for Bollywood to join the toon business—when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is raising a toast to Indian animation.
Incidentally, also at the Academy Awards this year, there were reports of how the organisers had to answer questions on why France’s Persepolis, a groundbreaking animated wonder, was omitted from its list of nominees in the Best Foreign Film category. The movie was nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category but ultimately lost to Ratatouille. The film, a story of a young Iranian girl whose world changes as the fundamentalists take over her country, has been rated by several critics, like the BBC’s Tim Robbins, as the best film to come out of 2007. Persepolis, like the other Indian animation movies in the pipeline, is not a children’s film. These Indian movies, besides being technologically superior, are moving away from over-simplified, exclusively for children’s stuff, to more mature and wholesome entertainment.
“Animation is a huge mode of entertainment across the world, though its presence was not felt in India till recently,” says Soundarya, whose Ochre Studios will co-produce Sultan with Adlabs Films. “I thought animating my father would be a great visual treat for the audience. And it will be even better if he is shown 20 years younger.” According to Nasscom figures, the Indian animation industry, currently pegged at US $550 million, is expected to grow by 30 per cent annually and touch US $1.3 billion by 2010.
Bollywood, with its glamour and star cast, has joined in the movement. Roadside Romeo will have voice-overs by Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Aishwarya Rai might lend her voice in Percept Picture Company’s The Prince of Love, to be made by Kamlesh Pandey. Nikhil Advani’s Orion Pictures too is coming up with Ab Dilli Door Nahi that promises a big star cast. Soundarya’s Sultan flaunts a huge budget of Rs 40 crore (US $10-12 million) and Toonpur is pegged at the same amount too. In early 2000, Hanuman was made on a mere Rs 6 to Rs 7 crore.
“Today, we have the technology and skilled professionals to compete with world-class animation films,” says Devgan. Toonpur, directed by Kireet Khurana, will have a combination of animated and live characters and tell the story of a superstar who accidentally becomes a real-life hero. “The script is terrific and has all the elements of commercial success. Its budget is justified and its recovery should not be an issue,” Devgan reasons. “Not just children, adults too are our target audience,” says the film’s producer, Kumar Mangat.
Percept Picture Company (PPC) has in the offing Jumbo, Return of Ravana (both Rs-25 crore films) and another untitled venture that will cost US $25 million. UTV has signed an agreement with Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment to co-produce animation films. “This kind of investment was unimaginable even three years back when people were not ready to make Rs 2.5 crore animation movies,” says Khurana, the director of Toonpur.
Animation films have a longer shelf life. In 2003, Hanuman made a 20-25 per cent profit that included the sale of DVDs and merchandise. With the rise of multiplexes and the trend of releasing movies with a huge number of prints, producers and directors are not concerned about the recovery of budgets. “Animation as a genre requires such budgets. The pre-and post-productions need more than 18 months. Besides, 100-200 animators are involved in a big project,” says Alpana Mishra, head, productions, UTV Motion Pictures.
The trend is also to drift to more mature subjects. For instance, UTV’s Dream Blanket is a “dark fairy tale” that narrates the dream-like journey of a girl who searches for something that is very close to her heart. The company’s other interesting productions are Alibaba and Arjuna; the latter shows the transformation of the Pandava brother from an innocent young boy to a master warrior. “Till now, the Indian audience has not seen anything worthwhile in animation. A good original story will make a difference,” says Simi Nallaseth, director of Dream Blanket. “It’s important to select stories that will appeal to a large section of the audience. We’ve recognised the need to have a bigger audience,” adds Mishra.
However, the animated remakes of successful Hindi films are evoking curiosity. Feroz Nadiadwala’s Hera Pheri series and Pritish Nandy Communications’ Sholay are significant ventures along with Johar’s Kootchie Kootchie, which will have the same love story retold through the lives of dogs. “The challenge is even bigger for animated remakes because people have already seen the stories. These remakes have to be made extra-ordinarily,” says Preet Bedi, CEO, PPC.
Filmmakers are ready to tap the global market and thus create a niche for Indian animation. “Sultan will be released in 12 different languages. Apart from Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, we will release it in English, French, Japanese and Zulu,” says Soundarya. Devgan’s Toonpur too will be dubbed in multiple languages, including English and other Indian languages. At present, the primary challenge is to move away from amateurish production values and clichéd stories. Post the success of Hanuman, the industry saw look-alike films like Bal Ganesh that failed to pull crowds.
House Music Posted online: Wednesday, March 05, 2008 at 11:19:38
It has been sometime since Bollywood grooved to an Annu Malek song, original or inspired. The music director was instead seen on television talent hunts, playing the Indian version of the rude Simon Cowell. Now, after the disastrous Jaan-E-Mann and Umrao Jaan, Malek is busy — and happy. He is recording a youthful version of the timeless melody Jab pyar kiya to darna kya for Man Gaye Mughal-e-Azam that will be picturised not on Madhubala but Mallika Sherawat.
He is also scoring for Ajay Devgan’s Toonpur Ka Superhero and Mission Istanbul.
But there is one more reason for Malek’s glee: his 17-year-old daughter Anmol is singing for Sherawat in the forthcoming film Ugly Aur Pagly. The tunes are Dad’s. “Anmol has sung a few lines earlier for the younger Aishwarya Rai in Umrao Jaan. But this is the first time she is doing proper playback. My younger daughter Ada is also singing my song in a film.” That’s house music
Toonpur Ka Super Hero is India’s first Live action -3D Animation combination feature film. Aditya (Ajay Devgan) a reel life hero, accidentally lands in the world of cartoons and transforms into a real life hero.
There is trouble brewing in the land of cartoons - Toonpur. The good guys of Toonpur (Devtoons) and the bad guys (Toonasurs) are at constant war. That’s when Devtoons decide to take superstar action hero - Aditya’s help and get him down to Toonpur. But things are not as simple as the Devtoons had thought.
Toonpur Ka Superhero is an sci-fiction action-adventure genre, fun-filled film starring Ajay Devgan, Kajol and lots of toons.
Mumbai: "Toonpur ka Superhero" is a Bollywood film with around 60-70 percent live action animation sequences, directed by award-winning film maker Kireet Khurana. With a history of making ad films and short animation films in Canada and India, this is Kireet Khurana's first full-fledged Bollywood venture.
Director Kireet says, 'Toonpur ka Superhero' is a cute and endearing animation film with Ajay Devgan and Kajol caught up in the war of the toons! A loving father and family man who is a reel life hero and who accidentally lands in the world of cartoons and becomes a real life hero."
The film goes on the floor for the live-action component, an integral part of the film and story telling. Music is given by Anu Malik and lyricist Munna's nonsense poetry apt for this unique format. It seems like "Toonpur ka Superhero" is one exciting film to watch out for. This film has been written by Raagi Bhatnagar with dialogues by Mubeen Farooqi.
"Toonpur ka Superhero" is an Eros International Presentation.
