(STATS) -- Coach Jason Simpsons first season at UT Martin in 2006 has been his most successful -- nine wins, an Ohio Valley Conference championship and a trip to the FCS playoffs -- yet it comes with a disclaimer.Weve had three or four teams since then that have been better than that 2006 team, Simpson said Monday as he enters his 11th season with the Skyhawks. While UT Martin hasnt won a title since Simpsons first season, its been one of the more consistent programs in the OVC. The Skyhawks are 51-28 in conference games and 65-49 overall under Simpson. The league has gotten better through the years, said Simpson, whose team finished third last season and was picked fourth in the 2016 OVC preseason media poll behind two-time defending champion Jacksonville State, Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois.Simpson has done so well in rebuilding what was once a struggling program that he can return only nine starters this season and be optimistic that his team will overachieve again. His Skyhawks finished 6-2 in the OVC last year and their only losses were by a combined nine points to the conferences two playoff squads, Jacksonville State and Eastern Illinois.I stay up at night and think about that all the time, Simpson said. While UT Martin returns only four offensive starters and five on defense, there are other players from the two-deep who also have starters experience and are ready for bigger roles. The big change is at quarterback, where Jarod Neal wont be behind center for the first time in 2 1/2 seasons.Either former Florida State signal-caller Troy Cook or Marshall transfer Gunnar Holcombe is expected to be the starter, and he will look to big wide receiver Caylon Weathers (6-foot-4, 207 pounds) as the go-to player. The Skyhawks have to replace all five starters in their secondary, but have a defensive anchor in tackle Damani Taylor, a Martin native who was selected to the All-OVC preseason team.Come to play early, Taylor said. Last year, we kind of felt the other team out in the game and tried to win the game. We cant do that this year.As they seek to win a third straight Sgt. York Trophy series between the four OVC teams in Tennessee, the Skyhawks have one of the most interesting schedules in the FCS. They are allowed to play 12 games because of a matchup at Hawaii (Sept. 10) and are one of only two FCS programs (joining South Carolina State) to be playing three FBS programs (also at Cincinnati on Sept. 1 and Georgia State on Oct. 22).Its a challenge, of course, but something Jason Simpson is accustomed to facing at UT Martin.---=OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL PRESEASON POLL=Voted on by Head Coaches and Sports Information Directors1. Wasps missed the chance to go top of the Aviva Premiership as they were outgunned by a fiercely committed Gloucester at Kingsholm. The home forwards were the major influence on the game, preventing their opponents from getting any fluency.Richard Hibbard, Mark Atkinson, Matt Scott, Charlie Sharples and Henry Purdy scored the Gloucester tries with James Hook converting four and adding a penalty in a 36-18 win.Thomas Young scored two tries for Wasps with Jimmy Gopperth kicking two penalties and a conversion.Gloucester began strongly and took a fifth-minute lead when Hook fired over a penalty before Wasps rallied with two well-judged kicks from Dan Robson and Danny Cipriani securing them a platform in the home 22.At a line-out five metres out, the Wasps three-quarters joined the driving maul for Young to score the opening try, but Gopperth was badly off target with his conversion attempt.Despite this reverse, the home forwards allowed Gloucester to have the better of the opening quarter with the visitors conceding a number of penalties as they struggled to cope with the pressure.Gloucester gained their reward when Hibbard crashed over following a driving line-out and with Hooks successful conversion, the hosts deservedly led 10-5 after 20 minutes.Rob Miller burst out of defence for the best piece of attacking play during the first half but after a threatening 40-metre run, the Wasps full-back passed the wrong way and the chance was lost.A minute from the interval, Wasps conceded their eighth penalty of the half, this time for a line-out push, but Hooks kick at goal fell nnarrowly short.ddddddddddddloucester brought on Matt Kvesic in place of Jacob Rowan at the interval but it was the visitors who started the second half with a bang.A couple of drives from Young and two penetrating runs from Kyle Eastmond secured Wasps a platform in the home 22 as they showed far more urgency than anything they had displayed in the first half. They reduced the deficit after 46 minutes when Gopperth kicked a penalty before bringing on Ashley Johnson and Marty Moore in the pack in the hope of providing further impetus.Gopperth was on target with his second penalty to edge Wasps back ahead but an error from Cipriani gifted the hosts their second try.His clearance was charged down by John Afoa and when the outside-half tried to retrieve his mistake, he fumbled the ball which allowed Atkinson to pick up and score with Hooks conversion giving Gloucester a 17-11 at the end of the third quarter. It soon got worse for Wasps when they conceded another try after a strong run from Atkinson was supported by Scott, who picked up to force his way over. They were narrowly denied by the TMO before Young scored his second try with six minutes to go.A nerve-racking finish looked on the cards but two minutes later the match was sealed when Sharples easily won the race to a long kick ahead from Will Heinz for a bonus point.Wasps miserable afternoon was completed when Purdy scored a fifth a minute from time after another visitors attack broke down.
