Even as Raj Kumar Santoshi is gearing up for his Ajay Devgan-Priyanka Chopra starrer London Dreams, he has already started to plan his next project. Santoshi plans to make a large-screen version of the Ramayan at an estimated budget of Rs 80-100 crores.
"It won't be just another mythological interpretation of the tale. Ram so far has been depicted as a gentle pliable soul, but frankly he was a man with plenty of guts. He gave up his kingdom for his principles. My film will reflect the Ramayan and its hero as an ageless moral fable," says Santoshi.
The scripting is being done jointly by Santoshi and Anjum Rajabli. "I feel the interpretation of the Ramayan has so far been very theatrical," says Santoshi. "I want that to change with my Ramayan. I want to look at the epic as a mirror of life. It will be an English-Hindi bi-lingual on the scale of King Kong and The Lord Of The Rings. In fact, we're roping in the people behind these two Hollywood films for our Ramayan"
Santoshi will start filming Ramayan early next year. In the mean while the hunt is on for the right cast. "The casting will be tricky," says Santoshi. "I need an established Bollywood actor to play India's biggest hero through various stages of his amazing life. But I can't have Ram dancing and brawling at a disco. Every member of the cast, whether it's Ram, Sita or Ravan will be bound by a contract stipulating their conduct both off and on screen during the filming."
Meanwhile, Santoshi cannot contain his excitement at the prospect of doing this project. "I've never been more challenged and enthusiastic about any project. It was my ultimate dream to make the Ramayan. We're going to make sure that Ramayan is on par with the Hollywood spectacles."
Who should play Ram? Mithun Chakraborty: It has to be Hrithik Roshan as he is well-built and tall and exudes a spiritual look.
Arbaaz Khan: It has to be either Hrithik Roshan or Salman Khan. Both of them have the looks and physique to play the part.
Ishaa Koppikar: Hrithik Roshan. He has this ideal husband image with a serene and content look on his face.
Neha Dhupia: Salman Khan. I think his kind eyes convey it all.
