Zitat von FoxyXRe: B.O. update: 'Sunday' starts slow, but picks up By Taran Adarsh, January 26, 2008 - 08:22 IST
The solo release of the week, SUNDAY, had a 30% start in the morning/noon shows, but the collections picked up from mid-day onwards. By evening, the occupancy was 60% - 70% at various screens. The business should show a big jump on Saturday, since it's a National holiday [Republic Day]. Sunday too should show an upward trend since the film is carrying encouraging reports.
Director Rohit Shetty's Sunday generated a poor opening at multiplexes, netting 30 percent to 35 percent only. Single screen theatres saw a worse fate at less than 20 percent.
Note: Films are ranked according to their release dates. The thumbs ups and downs reflect rediff's views.
Sunday
Cast: Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Ayesha Takia. Director: Rohit Shetty.
Good performances, superb camerawork. Disappointing climax and muddled comic-thriller.
Ajay Devgan can heave a sigh of relief! His new movie, SUNDAY, has fared much better than his last few releases [RAMGOPAL VARMA KI AAG, CASH and HALLA BOL] in U.K. In fact, SUNDAY has done in 3 days what HALLA BOL has done over two weekends [10 days]… The Punjabi film, YAARIYAN, has fared well in its opening weekend in U.K.
Weekend: January 25 - 27, 2008.
U.K. BOX-OFFICE
* SUNDAY has debuted at No. 16 position. In its opening weekend, the film has collected £ 77,476 [approx. Rs. 60.49 lacs] on 32 screens, with the per screen average working out to £ 2,421.
The Ajay Devgan multi-starrer comedy Sunday has flopped at the UK Box Office.
Distributors Eros International were hoping that the flavor of comedy would continue to bring people to the cinemas, but this was not the case for this particular film. The film was being shown at a good 33 screens but still managed only an average of $4,881 per screen. Total collection for the film stand at $161,059. The film entered the UK Box Office charts at number 16.
The other new Bollywood release of the week, Bhumika Chawla starrer Yaariyan, fared slightly better. The film was only shown on a meager 11 screens but still managed to bag $55,347. It opened in the charts at number 22.
Aamir Khan’s much talked about flick Taare Zameen Par is still making money, even in its sixth week of release. The total collections of this drama now stand at $663,362 and it stands in the charts at number 29, a drop of only 2 places from last week.
Halla Bol is dropping down the charts, as in its third week it only managed a weak $7,242. Two Tamil films make up the rest of the Bollywood/India chart.
RS UK BOX OFFICE CHART
1. Sunday 2. Yaariyan 3. Taare Zameen Par 4. Bheema 5. Halla Bol 6. Kaalai
Out of the frying pan, it's straight into the fire. That's the state of the industry currently. The dry run at the box-office continues non-stop, the latest 'casualty' being SUNDAY. Why are people shying away from theatres? Is it due to the cold wave? Or is it because they aren't excited about films? Whatever the reasons, the business has suddenly turned ice-cold. Post WELCOME and TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, the graph continues to slide downwards.
What wrong with SUNDAY? It's a well-made, entertaining joyride. But the 30% - 40% opening was simply unexpected. A very prominent distributor/exhibitor feels [and rightly so!] that the movie-going segment that favors movieplexes today is the youth and Ajay Devgan's popularity has declined over the years in this segment. Partly because Ajay has been seen in similar kind of movies/roles [serious].
Ajay needs to experiment with romance and comedy -- something that Akshay realized a few years ago and changed lanes quickly. Often labeled a 'stunt hero' not too long back, Akshay is now considered a romantic hero who works big time in comedies. That, in turn, has resulted in his ratings soaring upwards, nationally and internationally. This is what I also conveyed to Rohit Shetty, director of SUNDAY, who also happens to be a close friend of Ajay's.
SUNDAY picked up on Friday evening, shot upwards on Saturday [26th January was a National holiday], was on the plus side on Sunday, but Monday onwards, has registered a steep fall. Frankly, SUNDAY deserved a better fate and a better run. The only hope is that the coming days aren't really crowded with biggies. There's JODHAA AKBAR on 15th February. Till then, SUNDAY can catch up if the audience gets into the mood of visiting theatres.

... Last Friday's Rohit Shetty directed Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer, SUNDAY, disappointed with its opening. The film which was expected to give the Hindi film industry its first success of the year, got off to a dull start in Bombay and its opening was weak almost everywhere. Though there was some pick-up noticed in Bombay as the weekend progressed ( to an extent in Delhi city also), it was not very significant or pronounced. However, SUNDAY managed to gross a reasonable $161,059 from the UK during the opening weekend, which is more than what Devgan's last film HALLA BOL earned till date. ...

First weekend performance of latest release
Box office 2008 is certainly throwing up surprises. After a disappointing run of HALLA BOL, even SUNDAY opened to a below par response. While a 70%-80% seemed to be very much on the cards, close to 50% opening came as a bit of surprise. Not that all is lost though for SUNDAY (Rohit Shetty's films are known for opening around average mark and becoming money spinners as days progress - as witnessed in ZAMEEN and GOLMAAL) but a speedy revival is an absolute must.
What didn't work for the film? It's lukewarm climax. For any thriller to work, it's culmination is of utmost importance, howsoever solid the 2 hour built up may have been. In case of SUNDAY, it carried on quite well up to the last reel but the climax turned out to be an anticlimax. Still, if one looks at the film in entirety, it's narrative is far more original and novel than one has witnessed in many a comic thrillers. Arshad Warsi's comedy is the strength of the film along with Irrfan Khan's antics and some jaw dropping stunts. Music works extremely well for the film and one expects all these factors to work together and help the film sail through past the safety mark.

SUNDAY has comparatively fared better than the previous Ajay Devgan starrers in U.K. The film fell by 58% in its second weekend, which means it’s steady… The Punjabi film, YAARIYAN, is faring very well, registering a 38% drop in its second weekend [rock-steady]. In fact, its screen average is better than SUNDAY for the second consecutive week.

... Last week's movies
Slow opening and an ultimate settling down of collections for Rohit Shetty films continues with SUNDAY as well. Agreed that a 14 crores first week, especially in light of 700 cinemas release, isn't a great number by any means but it isn't disastrous as well, as made out by some sections of the media. As indicated by an escalation of collections over the first weekend itself, the film settled down by end of week but it still isn't breathing easy to be qualified as a 'safe film'. Coming to collections, the film was best in Mumbai with close to 2.5 crores coming in. Delhi too crossed the 1.25 crores mark while Ahmedabad was decent with 50 lakhs. ...

... Whatever the hopes people associated with SUNDAY had, vanished because the Rohit Shetty directed film crashed by nearly 60 percent in its second week. The film collected 90 lakhs from Bombay, 25.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3.70 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.65 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.50 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 1.05 lakhs from Solapur, 2.60 lakhs from Nasik, 50 lakhs from Delhi city, 7.10 lakhs from Noida, 3.55 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 1 lakh from Agra, 1.15 lakhs from Aligarh, 9.70 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.80 lakhs from Faridabad, 1 lakh from Guwahati, 6.65 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.10 lakhs from Amravati, 1 lakh from Akola, 1.25 lakhs from Raipur, 4.75 lakhs from Indore, 12.75 lakhs from Jaipur and 8.50 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 5.25 crores, SUNDAY has netted an ordinary 18.25 crores in two weeks from India. The Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer adds to the list of failures for 2008. The only consolation is that SUNDAY has fared much better than Ajay Devgan's last release HALLA BOL in the UK, as it has so far grossed a decent $359,206. ...

... From the past
There was just a glitter of hope that SUNDAY may survive a sub-50% fall due to minimal competition around. However that was not the case to be as the film did see a 60% drop, hence bringing home only around 5 crores. In Mumbai the film earned close to 90 lakhs while Delhi just about managed to cross 50 lakhs. Though a 19 crores total means that the film is managing to sail through (just about, as predicted last week), the fact remains that SUNDAY hasn't turned out to be the box office success it deserved and the industry hoped.
SUNDAY has turned out to be one of the puzzling cases where it is hard to pin down a film's underperformance. A lot is being said about the film's poor climax or music but there have been countless examples where films have worked with minor aberrations like a weak climax or complete lack of chartbuster soundtrack. In fact in case of SUNDAY, there were quite a few exciting tracks. Also, the humor in the film was better than the kind we have witnessed in recent times and even seen being successful.
Anyways, leaving the post mortem aside, the actual collections mean that Ajay Devgan would have his eyes set on U ME AUR HUM. Meanwhile Rohit too has GOLMAAL RETURNS coming up which should bring his stocks in the running again. ...
