Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? collected 2.25-2.50 crore nett in day one. The collections were on the lower side due to most multiplexes not performing well. The film has done well at singles screens of UP, CP Berar and CI.
The multiplexes of CP Berar and CI are also a bit better but its performance in Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab, Bengal and South multiplexes is well below the mark. The film will need to pick up well on Saturday and Sunday to have good first week collections.
The film outperformed in CI circuit with 13.5 lakhs nett collections. Mumbai was 80 lakhs while Delhi/UP/East Punjab added 75 lakhs.

"ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE? is a feel-good comedy and a family entertainer, something the audiences have not seen in a long time. What is even more encouraging is that the opinion makers have compared it to the social comedies that were popularized by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee in the 70s and 80s. We are absolutely delighted that the audiences have welcomed this Atithi into their hearts and are recommending it highly. Going by these encouraging trends we are very confident that this is going to be a super hit!" says Denzil Dias, Deputy Managing Director (Theatrical), Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film that revolves around the story of a middle class couple (Ajay & Konkona) who land up with an unexpected guest (Paresh Rawal) has opened to a good response across the country and has become a favourite among the audiences as they have found an immediate connect with the hilarious plot of the film.
ATITHI...has not only been appreciated and recommended by the audiences but also by the critics who have termed it as a clean family comedy and compared director Ashwni Dhir to the likes of Bollywood's legendary directors Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee for his simple yet powerful direction. Looks like audiences across the country want this Atithi to stay for longer!
ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE (7/10): Mar 14, 2010 12:00 AM | By Star Talk
Background: I am not ashamed to confess that although we have only just completed two months of the new year, there is a sense of tiredness creeping into me.
The year thus far has been exciting and challenging, yet at the same time tense and stressful. Tense with the continuing global recession and stressful with our normal daily routines which include long hours in the office.
Even the movie industry, in recent months, has been bombarded with intense movies like My Name is Khan, Karthik Calling Karthik and even Teen Patti, so naturally it comes as a breath of fresh air to experience a light-hearted, yet realistic and entertaining movie.
That's exactly the kind of deserved relief a movie like this produces as it brings together National Flim Awards winners Ajay Devgan and Konkona Sen Sharma. Directed by Ashwin Dhir, who last made the comedy 1 2 3, the movie is produced by Amita Pathak, the daughter of big-wig producer Kumar Mangat, who temporarily switches careers after a flop debut in the disastrous Haal-E-Dil.
Story:
Let's first translate the lovely title of this movie, which probably gives away the basic plot, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, which means "Guest, when do you intend to leave"? The movie revolves around a happily married, middle-class couple Puneet (Devgan) and Munmun (Sharma), who, together with their adorable son, realise they are devoid of much culture and visitors. Things change drastically in their lives when a distant relative unexpectedly pitches up at their doorstep to visit for a few days and, as they say in Indian tradition, Guest is God. While the couple are happy to enter- tain the guest for a few days, things get hilariously chaotic when he overstays his welcome and begins to annoy everyone in the family, including the maid who refuses to put up with his constant interference. The couple decide to hatch a plan to get rid of the visitor. However, the plan fails miserably, which results in another plan, followed by another and another.
Direction:
After the average 1 2 3 which, suffered from too many characters and a weak script, Dhir shows marked improvement as a writer and director. He takes a new concept to Bollywood and provides pure entertainment that works due to the realistic atmosphere created by the arrival of the visitor. It allows the viewer to relate to personal experiences while also enjoying good clean fun. Dhir also adds a devotional side to this movie which fits very well with the overall story.
Performances:
When working independently, Devgan, Sharma and Paresh Rawal are brilliant performers. However, bring them together with great roles and the result is outstanding. While Devgan and Sharma work wonders together, it is the versatile Rawal who is the scene stealer.
What I liked:
One of the highlights is the fun song Suhaani Raat - this is a classic moment of agony and desperation.
Music:
Composed by Pritam, the music is nothing much to rave about, but there are devotional angles that should be appreciated by music lovers.
Overall:
While there are subtle social messages conveyed, this is a feel-good movie that packs a powerful cast and enjoyable theme. With the Easter holi- day season fast approaching, it's a movie I would recommend you watch to get some tips before the arrival of your unexpected guests. Or perhaps even better, take them along to watch this movie.
