ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Tom Brady vs. Trevor Siemian. It doesnt have the same ring to it as Brady vs. Manning .Yet, Siemian is providing the Broncos with better numbers than Peyton Manning or Brock Osweiler did last year when Denver swept the New England Patriots on their way to winning Super Bowl 50.And this despite a porous O-line, battered backfield and struggling pass catchers. In his last five starts, Siemian has averaged 303.8 yards passing with eight touchdowns and four interceptions behind a line thats surrendered 17 sacks and a ground game thats managed a sputtering 2.7 yards per carry. If not for some big drops over the last three weeks, the usual aura of AFC supremacy would surround Sundays showdown in Denver along with the typical home-field implications for the playoffs.Instead, while the Patriots (11-2) are closing in on a record-breaking eighth consecutive AFC East title, the Broncos (8-5) are scrapping just to get into the postseason party. Standing in their way are the Patriots, Chiefs and Raiders, who own a combined 31-8 record.I dont care who we play, weve got to win these next three games, safety T.J. Ward said.It would help if Denvers sniffling offense can find a way to help out its sizzling defense.Obviously, not getting a win last week, that stings a little bit. But I think were confident going into these last couple of games, Siemian said. I dont think anybody says in our locker room that we cant win any of these games, starting with New England. Weve got a confident group. Weve got the right guys to do it with, for sure. The Broncos are coming off a 13-10 loss at Tennessee where they held Marcus Mariota to 88 yards on six completions, including just one after halftime when the Titans managed only 42 yards on the ground.Siemian threw for 334 yards but Bennie Fowler couldnt hold on to what would have been the game-winning touchdown pass, a fastball that struck him in the face mask in the closing minutes. The Patriots see in Siemian a QB getting better each week -- and this after he outdueled three No. 1 picks in his first month as Mannings successor. So, theyre not exactly celebrating Mannings retirement. For a younger quarterback that hasnt played much, he does a good job of just keeping his eyes downfield, moving around in the pocket and just getting to the best play no matter really what happens with the rush or anything, Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty said.Despite unrelenting pressure and big hits that have resulted in injuries to both shoulders and his left foot, Siemian has completed 61.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 16 touchdowns and seven interceptions.Siemians athleticism, arm strength and mobility drew praise from Patriots coach Bill Belichick this week.Siemians quarterback rating of 89.8 is higher than Manning (67.9) and Osweiler (86.4) had last year, when Manning completed 59.6 percent of his throws with nine TDs and 17 interceptions and Osweiler completed 61.8 percent of his passes with 10 TDs and six interceptions.Osweiler prevailed in the regular season against the Patriots last year and Manning won the 17th and final meeting with Brady. Two months after the Broncos overcame a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit for a 30-24 overtime win behind Osweiler, Manning threw for just 176 yards in the AFC championship that Denver won 20-18 thanks to a defense that hit Brady a career-high 23 times, sacked him four times and intercepted him twice. The Broncos are the only team Brady has a losing record against (6-9), and hes just 2-7 in Denver.I think theyve had really good teams, Brady said Wednesday. More so than where you play, its how you play. We just need to play better than the way weve been playing out there. Its a great place to play. Theyve got great fans.Brady added that Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware are a lot more dangerous ... than the people in the crowd. So, were going to have to do a good job handling all those guys up front.Nothing will ever match the Brady-Manning matchup, but Siemian is counting on this one being the first of many with Brady, who aims to play several more seasons. When the season started, many saw Siemian as a stop-gap, keeping the seat warm for Paxton Lynch. Now, theres buzz about him being the long-term solution at QB in Denver, although thats not a notion Siemian was keen to entertain Wednesday.Im not looking too far ahead, Siemian said. I want to make the most of these next couple of games and get us into the playoffs and make a run here.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapletonFake Nike Baseball Jerseys . He had been linked with multiple teams over the last two years and recently considered making a comeback with the Warriors and Cavaliers, league sources told ESPN.As part of a letter to my younger self posted Tuesday on The Players Tribune, Allen wrote, I write this to you today as a 41-year-old man who is retiring from the game.Allen was a 10-time All-Star over a career spent with four teams -- the Heat, Celtics, SuperSonics and Bucks. He won two NBA championships -- one with Boston in 2008, the other with Miami in 2013 -- and is the leagues all-time leader with 2,973 career 3-pointers made, 413 more than anyone else to date.In his post, Allen praised former teammates LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. The men who you are going to win championships with are all going to be very different people, he wrote. What makes them champions is the boring old habits that nobody sees. They compete to see who can be the first to get to the gym and the last to leave.Allen averaged 18.9 points per game in 1,300 regular-season contests and shot 89.4 percent from the free-throw line, the seventh-best percentage in league history. When you start getting some national attention in high school, youll hear things like, Rays jump shot is God-given, Allen wrote. Listen: God doesnt care whether you make your next jump shot.God will give you a lot of things in life, but hes not going to give you your jump shot. Only hard work will do that.Allen is the last member of the Celtics famed Big Three to announce retirement plans this year.Garnett, 40, retired on Sept. 23 after a 21-year NBA career. Pierce, 39, announced three days later that he would retire after playing this season with the L.A. Clippers.Celtics general manager Danny Ainge issued a statement, saying: As one of the greatest shooting guards in the history of basketball, Ray Allen defined the word professionalism. Ray was born with special talent, but it was his leadership, tireless preparation, and infectious work ethic that made him a great teammate and champion. We would not have won the 2008 title without him.Teammates and coaches raved about Allens famed work ethic and commitment to fitness -- which now takes a different form, after he and his wife, Shannon, recently opened an organic fast-casual restaurant in Miami. Allen was almost always on the floor for a workout three hours before games, shooting on some occasions before the arena lights were even turned on.Wade said Tuesday that Allen inspired him.I learned so much from Rayy towards the end of his career, how he took care of his body, longevity and what it takes mentally and physically, he said.dddddddddddd [He had] a Hall of Fame career, man.He added: He pushed us to do things differently. He pushed us to take our bodies a different way. He talked to us about eating a different way and all kinds of stuff, man. So Ray was obviously an unbelievable basketball player but I think a lot of us are going to remember the person and what he meant to our team.Allen had the record for 3-pointers in a season for seven years, his mark of 269 standing until Stephen Curry made 272 in 2012-13 -- a record Curry has topped twice.Allens record of 2,973 3-pointers made in regular-season games doesnt even count the one that was his most unforgettable. His 3-pointer from the right corner with 5.2 seconds left in Game 6 of the 2013 NBA Finals for Miami sent the Heat to overtime against the Spurs in a win-or-else game, and helped them go on to win the title in seven games. Chris Bosh got an offensive rebound and passed to Allen, who was backtracking toward the corner.Allen, without even needing to look down to ensure that he was behind the line, elevated over Tony Parker and connected to tie the game -- even as arena workers kneeled around the court, holding the rope that they presumed they would soon be called upon to cordon things off for the Spurs championship celebration. On his way back to the bench to prepare for overtime, Allen gestured to those workers, shouting to put the rope away.It was just perfect, Wade said. No one else could hit that shot on our team but Ray, the way that it happened. Its crazy because he practiced it all the time. Ray has a drill where he sits on his butt, and he gets up and he backpedals back to the the 3-[point line] and he makes it. Thats one of the drills he does in the morning. So you look at that, you look at how he had to backpedal back to the 3-point line and get it off with defenders all on him. He practiced that over and over. I know coaches say all the time but remember that whole practice makes perfect [motto]? That was a moment where practice really makes perfect and we got a championship because of it.Allen, who played for UConn from 1993 to 1996, also starred in the 1998 Spike Lee film He Got Game, portraying Jesus Shuttlesworth, a top-ranked basketball prospect whose father (played by Denzel Washington) is in prison for killing his wife.Basketball will take you far away from that school yard, Allen wrote. You will become far more than just a basketball player. Youll get to act in movies. Youll travel the world. You will become a husband, and the father of five amazing children. The Associated Press contributed to this report. ' ' '
