Sanjay Back with a VengeanceBy MovieTalkies.com, 4 December 2007
Now that actor Sanjay Dutt is out of jail, he is like a man with a mission, out to retrieve his position in Bollywood. The 48-year-old actor is having high-profile meetings to finalise his future projects. The buzz is that his latest conquest is Vishal Bharadwaj's much-talked about movie, Julia.
Julia, is a film based on the life and times of the famous Indian actress and stunt queen, Fearless Nadia. Apparently Sanju has agreed to do the film in principle but the details have yet to be worked out. It seems that Vishal and Sanju had met quite a few times in the past. Sanju had also sat through a detailed script narration and had agreed to do the film. Then the actor got busy with the TADA court proceedings and could not allot any dates to Vishal. But now that he is out and a free man again, Sanju is believed to have resumed talks with the producers, UTV Motion Pictures. If all goes well, he will be paired opposite Run Lola Run actress Franka Potente, who was here in the city to undergo a screen test. Filming will only begin sometime next year, after Sanju is through with his pending projects. Julia is set in the Bollywood of the 1930s. The story has been written in collaboration with Matthew Robbins, who has written Close Encounters of The Third Kind and The Sugarland Express. It is believed that Bharadwaj is also in talks with actors Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor for other roles in the film.
Director: Rohit Shetty Actors: Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Ayesha Takia, Anjana Sukhani, Murli Sharma
Meet the boss of the gang Ajay Devgan is popularly referred to as 'boss'. Interestingly in Golmaal – a film that brought Ajay and director Rohit Shetty together again – Ajay besides being credited as an actor, was also credited for being the technical advisor and critical supervisor. "He's a one man army," says Rohit, "In fact, when we weren't shooting for Sunday , our gang used to be on the sets of his directorial debut venture U, Me Aur Hum, I used to work as his assistant director." Talk about multi-tasking.
Rohit Shetty: Maal-a-maal Never mind that his Golmaal was a big hit After Dhamaal also roped in big money, director Rohit Shetty is convinced that it's the 'maal' that's making all the producers maalamaal . And wishes that he had named his film Sunday maal. However, though he has already begun shooting for the sequel of Golmaal in Goa, one asks of a possibility of a sequel to Sunday . "If it's a hit, I'll definitely make a sequel. I'll probably call that Monday ." Here's to some fun-days!
Arshad Warsi becomes action man Actor Arshad Warsi will be seen in a different light in this film. We hear, that the natural actor-dancer got so excited when he heard that he had to do an action sequence that he went beserk practicing for it. Apparently, Arshad was at it since 9 am to 12 midnight. Now that's what we call action round the clock.
Esha Deol gets 'itemised' Actors Tusshar Kapoor and Esha Deol do an 'item number' in Sunday. So when you walk into Esha's make-up van and are greeted by her dog, who is her constant companion on the sets, you notice the lady in red doing her makeup all by herself. And before you ask about her item number, she quickly says it herself, "I don't like the term 'item number'. I'm doing this just for friends." Friends? "Yes, Ajay and Rohit," she says. "Besides the number that I am dancing to is kick ass, and I love dancing, so why not?"
Ajay Devgan: If I can cook... It's well known among circles that Ajay Devgan is indeed a brilliant cook and that cooking is quite stress buster for the actor. It was when the Sunday team was shooting in Chandni Chowk, Delhi that temperatures were soaring – all of 47 degrees - and Ajay was at his experimental best. He wanted to learn if the heat was enough to make an omlette. He organized for an egg, but at the end of it all, all he managed was a half fry. This did attract crowds who were intrigued by Devgan's curiosity levels and kitchen know-how as much as they were by his acting talents.
Ayesha Takia: Dancing to the 'toons' Ayesha Takia plays a dubbing artist for cartoon characters in the film. For her voice modulation she was trained by Vikas Kadam, who apparently trained Tusshar Kapoor for Golmaal . Tusshar played 'dumb' in the film and his performance was highly appreciated. With so many animated films being made in India these days, Ayesha sure has an alternative career thanks to this training workshop.
Music Unltd. It's become a fad these days to have multiple music directors work for one film, and director Rohit Shetty roped in as many as five music directors for Sunday – Sandeep Chowta, Raghav, Shibani Kashyap, Daler Mehndi and Suroor. "Different songs require different ingredients and skills, which are best brought together by different people. Every song required something unique, and that's the reason we roped in five music directors," says Rohit. The music of Shetty's Golmaal was a hit thanks to duo Vishal-Shekhar, but with five music directors, will the music of this one be five times better?
Vidya Balan had a dream run this year at the box office, and is hoping that next year too starts on a high note. Her film Halla Bol is hitting theatres in January. Vidya spoke to Girish Rao about Halla Bol, success and her alleged link-up with Shahid Kapoor. Excerpts:
Vidya, this year you had a dream run at the box office, almost like winning a lottery. Yes, and I thank God for it. Whenever you sign a film, one always hopes that the film will run at the box office. But in my case it's been so smooth, and that too back-to-back (with Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyya) that it's really amazing. The feeling is unbelievable.
Ok, what's the total value of your lottery? (Laughs) I don't know; it's just brought me infinite happiness and joy.
The buzz for Halla Bol is pretty strong. Tell us more. This year I had a total of five films this year and that itself is like a award. Halla Bol is releasing in January. Raj [Kumar] Santoshi ji has directed Halla Bol and the type of films he makes is such that they always talk about some issue and this film is no exception. Ajay plays an actor in the film and it's his journey from being a reel-life hero to a real-life hero. The whole story of the film is centered on Ajay, but there are also some other integral characters and I play one of those. I do agree that it's a small role but the very fact that I am a part of such a film makes you feel good. You are a part of a socially conscious cinema and that too with a director like Raj ji and actors like Ajay and Pankaj ji [Kapur] really makes me feel good.
'People will like Halla Bol'
So do you think Halla Bol will do well commercially? Of course! Inshallah, who won't harbour such a feeling? Forget about a film, even if it's half a film, I will always hope that it turns out to be a hit (laughs). I sincerely hope that the audiences will like Halla Bol. It's a different film and it's very relevant pertaining to what's happening in the society. In the current era, the media has mobilised public opinion to a great extent, and people have got justice because of it. The film is very topical and will be relevant all the time. I am pretty sure people will like Halla Bol, and they will be able to connect and identify with the film. ...
Sanjay Dutt and Manyata dropped in to have some fun on the sets of Golmaal Returns in Goa. Sanju did all the talking, Manyata did all the smiling
Sanjay Dutt with Manyata in Goa
The sets of Golmaal Returns in Goa have become a chill-out zone for a lot of Bollywood actors. Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor, Amrita Arora and Celina Jaitley, who are shooting for the film are often joined by their friends. Recently, they had some visitors: Sanjay Dutt-Manyata and Saif Ali Khan.
When Sanjay Dutt, who had flown down to Goa along with Manyata for a short holiday, heard that Ajay and team were shooting in the city, they decided to visit them on the sets. What followed was a fun-filled session. A source present on the sets, says, “Sanjay was in Goa along with Manyata for a holiday. He heard that we were also shooting here so he dropped in to meet us. It was fun having him around as we got a chance to chill out. He met Ajay and Kareena. He and Manyata sat through the day’s shooting. He had a long conversation with Shreyas and Tusshar, too. After pack-up, all of us headed out to a restaurant for dinner. He seemed quite happy to have Manyata by his side. She kept quiet for most of the evening. I remember her smiling a lot.”
When contacted, Tusshar Kapoor said, “We had a great time with Sanju sir around. He left us all laughing. He shared interesting stories from his past, shooting experiences and funny tales, etc. Sanju Sir and Manyata dropped in, in the afternoon. The entire cast, Ajay, Bebo, Arshad, Shreyas, Amrita… was there.”
Not just that, few days ago Saif Ali Khan dropped in, too, to be with girlfriend Kareena. “We have been shooting here since the beginning of this month with Kareena. It was surprising to see Saif hang around on the sets. He flew down on December 2 and left on December 3. He had come to be with Bebo for a day. After spending quality time with her, he left for Bangkok. He too chilled out on the sets and impressed everyone with the high-tech stuff on his laptop,” says our source.
Kareena Kapoor ran for her life when Ajay Devgan hurled a fake bomb at her, on the sets of Golmaal Returns
Bollywood bombshell Kareena Kapoor had a tough time dodging bombs on the sets of Golmaal Returns. Prankster Ajay Devgan made Bebo the butt of his prank.
Ajay managed to lay his hands on fake bombs, the type that light up but do not burst. A source from the production unit, says, "As usual, Ajay Sir was up to his pranks. God knows from comes upon interesting ideas to scare his co-stars. On the sets of Golmaal Returns in Goa he got artificial atom bombs to scare everyone. His target this time was Kareena Kapoor."
Ajay, our source says, scared the hell out of Kareena. "He got green coloured bombs that make a lot of noise. Ajay has some fake ones which do not burst but they look real. He lit one and threw one at Kareena. Poor Bebo couldn't believe her eyes, when she saw Ajay tossing it at her. She screamed and ran away while the rest of us, who were initially shocked, were left in splits by what we saw. Ajay, however, maintained a straight face."
Tusshar Kapoor, who was also present on the sets, says, "Oh yes, Ajay has been up to pranks and how! It was hilarious to watch his antics with those fake atom bombs. Bebo was scared to death when he hurled a bomb at her."
Ajay Devgan will have everyone in splits in SUNDAY - December 8
Ajay Devgan is a rare breed of stars! He can enact a character as flawlessly as any theatre artist and yet never make any bones about his histrionic ability.
In fact he says that he never does any homework on the characters that he enacts, but comes to the set and just slips into the character. Try to get him to explain how he manages to pull off complicated roles with such ease and chances are that Ajay will brush aside all the praises and not acknowledge his own exceptional talent.
The deadly Devgan, that he is, after the much appreciated about role in OMKARA will have everyone in splits in his forthcoming SUNDAY.
Ajay Devgan has once again been performing pranks on his co-stars, the latest being Kareena Kapoor on the sets of Golmaal Returns in Goa.
A source on the set says, “As usual, Ajay Sir was up to his pranks. God knows from comes upon interesting ideas to scare his co-stars. On the sets of Golmaal Returns in Goa he got artificial atom bombs to scare everyone. His target this time was Kareena Kapoor. He got green coloured bombs that make a lot of noise. Tusshar Kapoor was also on the set during this prank, and says, “It was hilarious to watch his antics with those fake atom bombs. Bebo was scared to death when he hurled a bomb at her.”
The sets of Golmaal Returns have been very busy with film-stars… only yesterday the recently released from prison Sanjay Dutt visited. He was in a joyful mood and his girlfriend Maanyata was with him. And a few days ago, Saif Ali Khan visited his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor.
One is a lonely number — add another one to it and it rocks.
Or that’s what the godman advising Sanjay Dutt and Manyata has emphasised. That’s why the actor will resume shooting, it is believed from December 11 (and not earlier or later).
Back to work Dutt, who was released on bail recently, has committed to several projects with an assortment of filmmakers.
One of them is being produced by Sunil Shetty’s Popcorn Entertainment teaming Dutt with Arjun Rampal, Urmila Matondkar and Aashish Choudhary.
The film titled EMI – EasyMonthly Installment – is being helmed by first time director Saurav Kabra .
Coming up Among Dutt’s other future assignments are Vishal Bharadwaj’s Julia, Indra Kumar’s Double Dhamaal and a film with Rahul Dholakia .
Those which had already begun shooting were Sanjay Gupta’s Alibag , Abbas-Mustan’s Mr Fraud and Sanjay Gadhvi’s Kidnap. Dutt also plans to launch his own production banner with the film Beehad directed by Milan Luthria.

Will Tushaar manage to match up to Govinda's antiques? - December 9
He has had his tryst with comedy in numerous films like Kyaa Kool Hain Hum, Good Boy Bad Boy and Golmaal. In all of these films, Tushaar has had an accomplice to his crimes and in the latest film Run Bhola Run that he has just signed up, he will have none other than the king of comedy Govinda by his side.
“Run Bhola Run is the story of two thieves and how they land up in a situation together”, says Tushaar about his film and rubbing shoulders with Chichi. The title of this film produced by Asthavinayak and directed by Phir Hera Pheri director Neeraj Vora is clearly a spoof on the English film Run Lola Run . But the film is not.
Clearly Tushaar is excited about Run Bhola Run. He completely agrees with our prediction. “I am dying to start work on the film. This is the first time I am working with Govinda and even director Neeraj Vora. Neeraj was earlier the scriptwriter for my film Golmaal so I did interact with him then.”
Govinda had earlier starred in his sister Ekta Kapoor’s home-production Kyonki Main Jhooth Nahi Bolta even before Tushaar became an actor and that is when their association began.
Speaking on one of India’s finest comedy actors and sharing screen-space with him, Tushaar says, “Govinda is the king of comedy and it will be a task matching up to his own capabilities. I will depend on the director completely to guide me through.”
Tushaar managed to win awards for his performance in Golmaal as the mute prankster despite seasoned actors like Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi and Sharman Joshi being in the film as well. Will he manage to do the same with Govinda?
Erste Promo von U, Me Aur Hum soll am 21. Dezember in die Kinos kommen.
First Cut!
Ajay Devgan, who has been shooting for Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Returns in Goa, winged back to Mumbai on Sunday only for a day. Reason? To cut the first promo of his directorial debut U Me aur Hum.
The promos will hit theatres on December 21 — the day Welcome and Taare Zameen Par release. Devgan also has wifey Kajol, daughter Nysa and sister-in-law Tanishaa joining him in Goa — due to the long schedule he has been missing his family a lot. Here’s a guy who knows how to mix work and pleasure!
Ajay Devgan is playing the doting father to perfection these days, while keeping his career alive at the same time
As we all know, Ajay is currently busy shooting for Golmaal Returns in Goa, and this is playing havoc with his daughter-time. The husband of fellow actress Kajol is not getting enough time to spend with his daughter Nysa. So the actor has decided that he will fly back to Mumbai every Friday and then back to Goa on the Sunday evening.
Well, if you have the money then why not… most of us fathers don’t!
The Year That Was: 2007 Rediff looks back at the highs and lows, the successes and failures, the heroes and villains, the wild and the overblown that made this year.
Ajay Devgan Kajol, do something quick! We have a feeling the strains of Michael Jackson's Black or White play in Ajay's head every time he picks out what to wear.
The result? Black tees, white tees, black shirts, white shirts, black singlets, white singlets... And if he's in a good mood, our fashion schizophrenic just veers in the opposite direction -- paisleys, floral prints, checks --- eeks! Kajol, do something quick!
Selvaragavan had become hot property up north after Vivek Oberoi expressed his willingness to act in 7G Rainbow Colony, if there was a remake in Hindi. The visibly delighted Selva was more than eager to foray into Bollywood and he found this the right opportunity to do so and pounced upon it. Selvaraghavan
Even before he finished his present project Aayirathil Oruvan starring Karthi, he had his next project all planned out.
But wait, he has his third project now replacing his second; confused? So are we. He also had plans to remake his critically acclaimed Pudupettai with Ajay Devgan in the lead. As it seems, he has decided to start this film ahead of his 7G remake, for reasons best known to him. Guess he believes Pudupettai might be a better launch pad for him in Bollywood, which hasn't seen such raw depictions of the underworld in the recent past.
