EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI
Missing Sunday (Singers: Mahlia Kamath, Suraj, Earl Edgar ) Rating: 8/10 ‘Cool, hip and happening’ best describes the title track of Sunday. Crooned by Mahlia Kamath and Suraj in addition with the rap by Earl Edgar, Missing Sunday is rhythmic, slow yet grabs your attention instantly. Musically, it is very slick and today, especially the westernized rendition by Mahlia Kamath is simply cool.
Pyar To Hona Hi Hai (Singers: Kamran Bari, Mohammed Ali) Rating: 7.5/10 From the cool Missing Sunday, the train moves on to a different track with Pyar To Hona Hi Hai. Rich lyrics with simple Indianized theme makes Pyar To Hona Hi Hai an adorable number. The fusion of drums with traditional rhythm makes Pyar To Hona Hi Hai catchy and effective.
Loot Liya (Singers: Daler Mehndi, Sundihi Chauhan) Rating: 6/10 Pace, energy and heavy instrumentation rules the roosts in Loot Liya, which is a fun based track. Daler Mehndi is his true essence while rendering his voice to the track. All in all, quite enjoyable.
Kashmakash (Singer: Shibani Kashyap) Rating: 6/10 Shibani Kashyap is in her true spirits while crooning Kashmakash where she finds her singing synchronizing with interesting influence from tech music and lots of computerized sounds.
Manzar (Singers: Mahlia Kamath, Suraj, Earl Edgar) Rating: 7/10 Words like Manzar, Sajda, Jalwa are becoming the most favourite ones incorporated by lyricists and music directors in their compositions. Manzar is a track which will take the onscreen watchers by surprise with its cool fusions and metallic instrumentations.
Sunday Theme(Singers: Joy-Clint) Rating: 8/10 Come to hear one of the instrumentals describing the theme of Sunday. Composed by Joy-Clint, the Sunday theme is fun filled, with a heavy dose of rap, strunning of guitar and drum beats. Not to miss!
Radiosargam Soundtrack Rating: 7/10 by Hanumant Bhansali
This Sunday is not as exciting Music Review: Sunday by rediff December 31, 2007 12:30 IST
Comedy continues to be the flavour of the season, with or without Akshay Kumar. Ajay Devgan-Ayesha Takia starrer, Sunday, is no different. Also starring Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Anjana Sukhani, Sunday has a fair amount of suspense thrown in as well.
Slated for a January 25 release, Rohit Shetty's third directorial venture after Zameen and Golmaal boasts of six music directors. And this is what they have to offer:
Mahua Kamath, former member of Channel [V]'s girl band Viva, along with Suraj and Earl Edgar hum and hammer over Missing Sunday, a Sandeep Chowta creation. The slack, monotonous number, despite all its attempts to sound cool, is very unexciting. As for its remixed, off-tune version, the lesser said the better.
One could easily mistake Pyar to hona hi hai to be a Strings composition. Instead another Pakistani band, Suroor does the honours. Talented musicians Kamran Bari and Mohammad Ali produce an uplifting track high on a riveting arrangement, soulful playback and lilting melody. It's remix by Tanay-Gaurav is as captivating.
In complete contrast to the warm beats of Pyar to..., Loot Liya, follows the masala-packed basti song, Loot liya. Trust composer and performer, Daler Mehendi to rub his infectious enthusiasm on the listener. While his Loot liya falls in the Dil mein baji guitar (Apna Sapna Money Money) category of dhinchak tunes, it is nonetheless catchy and fun while it lasts.
Ayesha Takia and Ajay Devgan in SundayMusic director and singer Shibani Kashyap starts off with reasonable delicacy and oomph in Kashmaksh but loses sizzle somewhere in the middle. It's Robert Miles insired remix by DJ Suketu is fairly groovy but lacks the magic of Kashyap's wild turn in Zinda hoon main (Zinda).
Up next, Raghav Sachar dishes out the foot-tapping, club-friendly Manzar. Having said that, it lacks that extra something to especially stand out.
The Sunday theme helmed by Amar Mohile is a lacklustre instrumental, a perfect example of all *thud*, no tune.
Considering multiple music directors are behind the soundtrack of Sunday, the album neither has a consistent mood nor sound. Therein lies its unique selling point as well as problem.
Music Review: Sunday by IndiaFM By Joginder Tuteja, December 29, 2007 - 12:50 IST
Innovative titles and themes are in. Otherwise, would one have ever imagined till a few years back that there would be a movie made with a title like Sunday with the film revolving around the life of a girl who had one missing day in her life - Sunday!? Directed by Rohit Shetty, Sunday is an interesting project in the offering since it boasts of an ensemble star cast comprising of actors as diverse as Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irrfan Khan, and Anjana Sukhani. Also, it comes after Zameen and Golmaal, two diverse films by the young film maker. With composers as diverse as Sandeep Chowta, Suroor, Daler Mehndi, Shibani Kashyap, Raghav Sachar and Amar Mohile coming up with a song apiece, Sunday raises quite some hopes as one plays on the film's soundtrack.
It doesn't take beyond a few seconds to get your neck in motion as the beats arrive for 'Missing Sunday'. With Earl Edgar chipping in with his occasional rap-n-reggae, Mahua Kamath (ex-VIVA girl) and Suraj come together in this groovy track by Sandeep Chowta who makes a comeback on Bollywood OST soundtrack years after his 'Laila Laila' in Samay - When Time Strikes. As such the track has a very few lines (written by Farhad Sajid) and it is mainly the composition with long standalone musical pieces in between the lines which makes it a unique experience.
Remix version, which comes next, is polished further, and brings with it a different rhythm, styling, and groove. If the opening version was not just good enough, this one only makes Sunday an album that you may want to go for even if it comprised of only a single - 'Missing Sunday'! An absolute winner, it is only aided further by an innovative music video that makes you catch the number umpteenth number of times as it arrives on the telly!
Put to tune by 'Suroor', 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai' which follows next takes a completely different dimension when compared to the title song and turns out to be an utterly delicious piece of melody to bite on. Written by Kamran Bari who pairs up with Mohammed Ali to even croon the track, a bona fide Pakistani soft track is impossible to resist.
A beautiful number that is instantly catchy and would be loved not just by the followers of Pakistani music but even hardcore Bollywood buffs, 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai' is a sugar coated track which is a superb track that one gets to hear before year end. Kamran Bari is excellent in his rendition as a young man who is realizing the essence of love and is truly enjoying every moment spent in bliss!
For a song like this, one secretly wishes that it remains untouched with no remix angle given to it. This is why, there are apprehensions galore when one starts lending ear to the 'remix version' that does make an appearance in the end. Though it is not bad at all in spite of added beats and pace to the original, one is tempted to go back to the original any time.
With Daler Mehndi's name staring from the credits, it is pretty much expected that there would be a fun outing in the offering. This is exactly the case as 'Loot Liya' comes next. After a groovy track ('Missing Sunday') and a melodious outing ('Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha'), the album gains from the range provided by inclusion of multiple composers as Daler gets into a duet which is reminiscent to the style of 'Dil Mein Baji Guitar', a Pritam composition from Apna Sapna Money Money.
A non-stop track that has Sunidhi Chauhan pairing up with Mehendi (who also writes the song in collaboration with Farhad Sajid) and has 'dhamaal' written all over it, 'Loot Liya' may not qualify as a classic track in the making but does well to keep the pace of the album going due to the fun quotient it promises for the masses.
Composer/singer Shibani Kashyap along with lyricist Virag Mishra had created a rocking 'Zinda Hoon Main' exactly two years back. The team returns to compose yet another dark track 'Kashmakash' that again takes a similar pitch and setting while creating an intriguing feel. A situational track which doesn't make one croon it around loud on the streets but still creates curiosity to know what the film is all about, 'Kashmakash' appears to be the item song choreographed on Esha Deol that may appear around the film's climax as the secrets unfold and hidden skeletons tumble. DJ Suketu's exciting 'remix version' only aids in ensuring retention value for the song.
Now this is a song, which could be a potential chartbuster if treated well! Raghav Sachar, who has his own style of composition while mixing western sounds with Indian feel (as witnessed last year in Kabul Express and some of his private albums), creates 'Manzar'. It picks up heat after a few lines set the pace for things to follow, as has been the composer/singer's style and takes some exciting twists and turns throughout it's near four minute duration. Written by Aditya Dhar, this should be a song to watch out for as one waits to see how the choreographer has treated this high-on-beats number.
Amar Mohile, who has been a regular (quite successfully) in the background music scheme of things, is the man behind composing 'Sunday - Theme'. With a slight oriental feel to it, this theme track is created entirely in English and has Joy (who also writes the song) coming together with Clint for the rendition. A fast paced track that is being heard along with the film's promos ever since they were first aired around three weeks back, 'Sunday Theme' is urban, young, spicy, enthralling and quite entertaining. Watch out for the way 'bhangra beats' is incorporated at places without turning it into an out and out Punjabi outing!
Sunday is the last album to be released in 2007 and ends the year on a happy note after a long draught that has been witnessed due to lack of any notable score. If title song 'Missing Sunday' is a major good enough reason to go for the album, love song 'Pyar To Hona Hi Hai', a masala number 'Loot Liya', theme track 'Sunday Theme' along with item numbers 'Kashmaksh' and 'Manzar' only add on many more reasons to rejoice.
There seems to be upbeat trend of having multiple composers for a film album and SUNDAY seems to be one such optimistic presentation. Pop diva Shibani Kashyap, “bhangra” sensation Daler Mehndi, upcoming prodigy Raghav Sachar, contemporaries Sandeep Chowta, Amar Mohile and new kids on block from Pakistan - “Surror” are the chosen one to deliver hot “n” spicy stuff. It can be transitory phase but the results in SUNDAY seem to be swashbuckling with tracks like “Missing Sunday”, “Pyar to Hona Hi Tha” and “Manzar” promising chartbusting success.
Sandeep Chowta gains his phenomenal ground in the marquee by pitching out a really hot and sweltering sluggish paced hip-hop and electronica type of “razzmatazz” fervor in feverishly paced title track “Missing Sunday”. Mahua Kamath, an ex-VIVA group vocalist seductive vocal oomph seems to be getting all playful acts together with impressive Suraj energized vocals joining the fun in tandem. Chowta’s upbeat inundation of hip-hop with tantalizing electronic beat rhythmic patterns collages effervescently with snooty Earl Edger emceeing in making it hot-shot hit track. “Missing Sunday (remix” simply adds more zest to the party but this time it’s more of a sluggish “club-house” stylized work where regular paced vocals gets into groove with subtle instrumental flows. Go get it!
JAL, ROXEN and now SURROR! “Pyar to Hona Hi Tha” (album –“Pyar to Hona Hi Tha”) marks the promising introduction of another prodigal Paki rock band “Surror” into Hindi filmdom with great success and all credits to their sonorously soft vocals, combustible orchestration and lucid wordings. Lead vocalists Kamran Bari along with Mohammad Ali leads the energetic bandwagon of spirited percussionist, flashy guitarist and thunderous arranger that really fires the entire energy on floors. Despite its blistering rock-concert feel, filmmakers have mistaken it as syrupy romantic duet but anyway it’s listening delight all the way. Even its flashy “club” mix gets both feet’s together on floors and with echoing DJ claps and scratches mixing well with snazzy disco beat fillers, its really one great party feeling.
If there was any thunder and edginess in “Talwar Re” (CHOODO NA YAAR) then “Loot Liya” seems to be another extension with spirited “Maharastrian Lavani” folksy touches. Daler Mehndi goes full throttle for this raunchy dancing track where gruffly paced Sunidhi Chauhan joins him in tandem to energize all passion. This coarsely composed folksy composition by Daler Mehndi may not be finest in its league but certainly delivers a pertinent festive feel for the desired situation.
“Kashmakash” tries to be another segment in this svelte sultry femme fatale style of seductive track like “Zinda Hoon Main” (ZINDA), but the ire and incineration of enticing listeners is completely missing. Shibani’s messy composition and Virag Mishra’s unimposing wordings seems to have muddled up all the sensuality in the track. The loud crooning and jarring orchestration sounds haywire and overall impact of scorching hot “item song” is strikingly missing. DJ Suketu’s technical skills improvises its prospects where Shibani’s vocals are at accelerated tempo while racy beat juggling and thumping impacts makes mood merrier with its infectious flow.
Raghav Sachar, the multifaceted musical talent who impounded with his prowess in KABUL EXPRESS makes all trendy moves in striking chord with “rock-cum-jazz” style of arrangement work in “Manzar”. It’s all together hip-shaking groovy number where soft rock concert feel gets tangy with “saxophone” stylized of “jazz” romanticism with dash of hip-hop rendition in delivering a rollicking feel on floors. Sachar’s strong affixation of Sufi music gets energized with Aditya Dhar simple wordings and gels together affably to give another pop genre loving track.
Finally there is “Sunday Theme”, by tried and trusted background scorer Amar Mohile, where the frothy and cheerful feel of “Sunday” is tantalized with varying pitched instrumental flows that amalgamates with choral emceeing (Clint and Joy) of the spirited feel of the film. It’s perfectly balanced to be well suited for beginning or end titles and do experience some hilarious moments getting refurbished on silver screen with “bits and parts” of this chirpy instrumental number.
SUNDAY proves to be bankable commercial preposition where assimilation of many multifaceted prodigies delivers ample moments to cherish for both producers as well as for its listeners. The album promises chartbusting hits in tracks like “Missing Sunday” and “Pyar to Hona Hi Hai” while tracks like “Manzar” and “Loot Liya” are expected to be picking up well with film’s success at box office.
In nutshell, its promising musical farewell to year 2007 and confirmatory success for SUNDAY!
Missing Sunday is schonmal ein Hit in Indien. In der momentanen Chart List jenes Lied auf No. 6. Na, das ist schonmal was für ein Ajay Soundtrack. 1cheers
6 New Sunday Making it's debut into the charts within a week of it's arrival into the stands, 'Sunday' has made an instant impression. It's the superb title song by Sandeep Chowta which has done the trick but there are at least 3 more songs which are a cut above the rest. 1raucher http://www.indiafm.com/features/2007/12/31/3418/index.html
Plusses: From here on begins the challenge for 'Sunday'. After breaking into Top-5 like a hurricane, now it has to fight it out with the big daddies who have slogged all these months to stake their claim into the top spots. 'Manzar' is on it's way and that should just about do the trick!
Minuses: None. The album has something for everyone and impresses class as well as mass audience.
Sunday, directed by Rohit Shetty, holds a couple of surprises for its listeners as far as the music goes. Sandeep Chowta returns to Bollywood with this film and the album also includes a composition by Pakistani band Suroor. And while there is Shibani Kashyap composing and rendering a track, Raghav Sachar too contributes.
Shibani makes her presence felt in the album not only as a singer but also as a composer for the song Kashmakash. This track is one of the classy item numbers that is minus all the raunchy music. But it has no lasting effect and would disappear into thin air.
A typical masala and masti piece comes in the form of Loot liya which Daler Mehndi as the composer as well as the singer. He pairs up with Sunidhi Chauhan for this rusty and celebratory number. Lyrics have been penned down by the singer himself along with Farhad Sajid. Again, one wouldn't want to particularly download it.
With Raghav Sachar written all over, Manzar comes in next. It has all the Raghav elements like the fusion of Indian and Western sounds with a bit of Sufi, soft rock and jazz. One of his favourite instruments, the saxophone, adds to the credibility of the track. An immensely likeable number, Manzar, sung by Earl Edgar, Mahua Kamath and Suraj, is sure to click with the masses.
The trio teams up again for the Missing Sunday. This Sandeep Chowta composition is more of music and less of chorus. With a whole lot of beats, rhythms and tempo intact, Missing Sunday" is a loud and catchy number that would be a hit when watching the film.
Pakistani band Suroor composes Pyar to hona hi tha. Kamran, who has penned it, along with Mohammed Ali renders the song that has amazing lyrics, pleasing music and vocals that click instantaneously. With soft guitar-strumming in the background, this one number is a piece of melody to be loved by all.
Amar Mohile composes Theme Music, an instrumental piece, with Clint and Joy rendering the vocals. It stands out among the rest for its musical arrangements. Joy pens the lyrics that are minimal.
In all Manzar and Pyar To Hona Hi Tha can be considered the highlights of the album. Both the songs are different from the rest and are sure to be etched in the minds of the audience for a long time.
It is going to be a treat for those who look for innovative music.
The soundtrack of the forthcoming comedy Sunday has six tracks, each composed by a different composer and non of whom carry a filmi tag.
The title track Missing Sunday, peppered with hip hop has been sung by Mahua- the ex VIVA girl who herself was missing from the music scene for a while.
To her, this track composed by Sandeep Chowta is a great way to start again.
"I think the song's been composed brilliantly by Sandeep Chowta who works very hard to create a song for a singer,” says Mahua.
The soundtrack also has a dance track orchestrated by Raghav Sachar.
And a club number Kashmakash by Shibani Kashyap.
For both these singers, composing for a joint album has two sides of a story- both good and bad.
"I think it is fabulous exposure for someone like me every time a soundtrack like this has worked well for me,” says Shibani.
“These soundtracks sometimes come in the way of our personal signature style. I would prefer to give the whole music of one film than this,” says Raghav.
The album also features a bhangra number by Daler Mehndi, and a romantic song by Pakistani band Suroor.
The producers of Sunday consider the mixed bag a safe bet to draw in listeners.
“Every song fits perfectly to the situation. And it will work out due to the variety,” says producer, Kumar Mangat.
And the strategy has worked too. Sunday's title track is fast catching up on radio stations.
The much awaited comedy film 'Sunday' is set to arrive this weekend and the highlight of the film is its sound track, which is made by six different tracks by six different artists none of whom are actually bearing the tag of association with films. With the likes of Mahua of 'VIVA' fame, Sandeep Chowta, Shibani Kashyap, Daler Mehndi, Raghav Sachar and Pakistani band Suroor in the audio album, the film surely has come out with the most creative combination. Starring Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia in the lead, the film is said to be a laugh riot.
Plusses Though 'Sunday' made quite some mark within days of it's arrival and also didn't take much time in reaching Top-4, it is a surprise that it hasn't moved up in last fortnight. Coming week should tell a different story though, what with 'Manzar' finally being unleashed and the movie too releasing this fortnight
Minuses None. The album has something for everyone and impresses class as well as mass audience.
