fter Aamir Khan’s mind blowing directorial debut in TAARE ZAMEEN PAR, its Ajay Devgan tryst with film direction that materializes well with romance-cum-drama flick U ME AUR HUM. Vishal Bharadwaj, the magical sensation behind OMKARA success, proves to be uncharacteristic choice for the album over present set of contemporaries in delivering trendy and feisty sounds, rhythms and music for this romantic roller coaster ride.
Vishal Bhardwaj takes a huge plunge into whirlpools of Latino stylized musical thrust as music runs loud, vocalist croons out emotions while chorals takes centre-stage in chartbusting delight “Jee Lee”. After sassy “Don’t I love or do I love you” (SUPERSTAR), Adnan Sami modulates to perfection in this “cruise-carnival” feast with Shreya Ghoshal adding mesmerizing tones with her svelte rendition. Munna Dhiman’s wording may not be “out-of-world” but certainly delightfully penned with the ecstatic mood of the track. The number is surely be chartbusting success and likely to be next feverish punch on the floors with it ever growing promotion.
Jaspinder Narula did a fantabolous job with the title track “Pyar to Hona Hi Tha” (PYAR TO HONA HI THA) with her uncharacteristically westernized vocal flair and now it’s Shreya Ghoshal softening her vocal textures into another gem of “true-blue” soft rock title track “U Me Aur Hum”. Its supple romantic overtures are gesticulated with fine blend of intrinsically westernized connotations in the backdrop (similar to “Humko Chhone Paas Aaye” (ZINDAGI ROCKS)) while Dhiman’s precariously sentimental wordings are sheer delight. The second version has Vishal Bharadwaj in his sonorous baritones (similar to his previous “O Saathi Re” (OMKARA)) to create a serene wave of emotion, well suited for background score demands. Like recently heard “Main Chali” (BLACK & WHITE), Shreya Ghoshal’s version proves to be much superior choice to her contemporaries work and will surely be encouraging factor in album’s sales.
Kajol’s ever-inimitable “Mere Khwabon Mein” (DILWALE DULHANIYE LE JAYENGE) had countless clones in past and now “Saiyaan” arrives in the marquee with no big thump. This dreamy passion for “dream-boy” sounds lackluster for its insipidly punched “Saheli-Paheli” phraseology coupled with mediocre arrangements, making it strictly on-screen track for Kajol fan club. Sunidhi Chauhan’s sparkling variations and chirpy modulations fails to find the desired concoction of frivolously penned wordings and energized trendy musical thrust.
Bharadwaj goes Pritam’s way for his “Halka Halka” (CHOCOLATE) signature tunes in the prelude in “Phatte”, another mediocre sounding track about lively carnival feast in customary “bhangra” lingo punches. Adnan Sami along with Sunidhi Chauhan gets into intoxicating singing mood but the “masti” and buzz is strikingly missing and with wishy-washy wordings, it’s a completely average affair. Vishal Bharadwaj had colossal success in imbibing traits of “nautanki” mood into electronic beat structures in “Beedi” and “Beedi” (OMKARA) but the magic is completely missing with “bhangra” impulsive and racy punches.
After enthralling “Jee Lee”, Adnan Sami and Shreya Ghoshal gets into another “masti” filled singing act in thriving and infectiously pulsating situational love track “Dil Dhakda Hai”. The sluggish periodic rhythmic beating with chirpy percussions has stylish 80’s pop touches with dash of hip-hop works. The playful argumentative musical work has hilarious tones in its “good-humored” phrases but the entertainment is strictly situational and shoulders on to the comical timings of the lead players.
U ME AUR HUM is an average sounding entertaining album that promises some upbeat musical works in the form of numbers like “Jee Lee”, “U Me Aur Hum” and “Dil Dhakda Hai”. Vishal Bharadwaj’s work fails to notch up any new boundaries in marquee but surely is urbane listener’s delight.

Music director : Vishal Bharadwaj Lyrics: Munna Dhiman Singers : Adnan Sami, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Vishal Bharadwaj Rating: ***
Much against his action image, Ajay Devgan debuts as a director with a romantic film. So as per cinematic laws of Bollywood, song-dance and music are mandatory to the movie. U Me aur Hum need to know if Devgan can surprise us with the music of the film as well.
As the album opens with Spanish lines in the much-publicized Jee Lee track, it sets a perfect ambience for a Latino Salsa kinda dance number. Adnan Sami and Shreya Ghoshal take over the duet in their mellifluous voices, as the track gains pace and momentum and soon gets the listener into groove. The rhymes of verses faintly reminds of the track ‘Aaja Gufao Mein Aa’ from Aks though the tunes are distinctly different. .
The title track ‘U Me Aur Hum’ has sweetness coated all over as Shreya Ghoshal lends her honey-soaked vocals to it. The mushy track grows on you slow-n-steady and makes for a good solitude listening. Asif Ali Beg is the standard choice when it comes to English lyrics but the liberal usage of backing vocals is quite unlike of Vishal Bharadwaj.
Read the track name ‘Saiyaan’ and you would be somehow right if you guess that Sunidhi Chauhan would be behind the mike. But if it’s suggestive of a raunchy item number by her, you are wrong. You could call this a ‘teaser track’ where the heroine goes teasing and taunting the hero. More specifically a wife is complaining about her husband on a funny note. Lyricist Munna Dhiman comes up with imaginative and interesting lines with the syntactic treatment in the vein of ‘Gore Gore Se Chore’ (Hum Tum) while the tuning treatment vaguely reminiscent of the popular remix Indipop number Koi Shehri Babu.
Read ‘Phatte’ and Punjabi music strikes the mind. With Punjabi, bhangra becomes obvious. This one is no exception but the track thankfully stays away from the standard bhangra beat count. From the previous one-gender teaser track, this one upgrades to the battle of sexes with Dhiman’s lyrics getting at its creative best. Drawing parallels with Hum Tum again, the phraseology here is analogous to a post marriage version of ‘Ladki Kyun Na Jaane Kyun’ . This bhangra makes listening sense too.
Since ages we have heard Dil Dhadka terminology in Hindi lyrics. But here Dil goes Dhakda and the song explains how and why. Adnan Sami and Shreya Ghoshal get you into a foot-tapping and head-swaying mood on the backdrop of perky percussions. Special mention to the lyrics again where the guy goes purely poetic and the girl is plainly practical.
The album concludes with the male version of the ‘U Me Aur Hum’. Composer Vishal Bhardwaj (heard only a couple of times before) has a smooth texture to his voice which he lends to the title track in a new gender without much audible difference.
Coming from a mellow and rustic composer Vishal Bharadwaj, the lively tunes of U Me Aur Hum , pleasantly surprise you. Hope the film is equally well-written and directed as much as the lyrics and music of the film are treated, respectively.
U Me Aur Hum auf Platz 5 (Vorwoche Neueinsteiger)!
Plusses After 'Race', 'U Me Aur Hum' has turned out to be the only music in 2008 which has really made a mark. The album is not just en route to be a good commercial success; even critically it is being appreciated. A very good soundtrack by Vishal Bhardwaj, it has some more interesting tunes getting ready to be unveiled after 'Jee Le' and 'Dil Dhakda Hai'.
Minuses Ajay Devgan and Kajol in a hardcore romantic entertainer is not everyone's idea which could have it's effect on perception created for the film's music
Its time again for the lovers of classy (not classical) and quality music to sit up and take notice, as the versatile genius, Vishal Bhardwaj is back to rule our hearts and the charts through his music. All credit to Ajay Devgan for providing him with the opportunity and showing faith in his Omkara director, Vishal's musical capabilities. The reason being that this album gives him ample scope to showcase his hitherto untapped musical potential.
So with a whole lot of expectations let us check out the highly anticipated U, Me Aur Hum album.
Latino (Spanish) influences pervade the atmosphere with nice heel clicking sounds, accompanied by some passionate Spanish/Italian singing heralds the delightfully romantic 'Jee Le'. It is a superbly composed dance track (Salsa like) that has such an infectious, rollicking rhythm that it can persuade even a person with two left feet to jive. Adnan is simply mind-blasting, as he puts in all the effort and comes out trumps. The lyricist Munna Dhiman deserves a mention for the lovey-dovey lyrics capable of immersing the die-hard romantics in their own dream world.
From one romantic number we move on to another one, 'Dil Dhadka Hai', not surprising, as this is a romantic movie. Adnan Sami and Shreya Ghoshal team up once again after the superb first number. The musical arrangements complement the light melody with soft notes well, and there is not an iota of doubt that this number will definitely hit the charts.
Light, mellifluous guitar strumming and a lovely, groovy synthesized rhythm gets one into the mood straight away with the next track 'Phatte'. Quite a pleasant change from the usual Punjabi numbers based on same old, mundane Punjabi folk. Coming to the most important factor, the rendition of the song, the primary factor that makes this song a pleasant listening experience. At times it is difficult to imagine that it is the iconoclastic Vishal Bharawaj, who is the composer here, but he has taken to commercial style composing like a duck takes to water.
Another light hearted, situational track, 'Saiyaan' follows. The first average composition of the album, if we talk in terms of the tune, which is a let down, especially since it comes from Vishal. The similes that he chooses are very humorous, "Bareilly jaisa saiyaan, Paheli jaisa saiyaan," and this makes one wonder if Dhiman is trying to encash the real-life "miyan-biwi" jodi of Devgan and Kajol in reel life too. Sunidhi brings out the pleasant grouses and woes of a wife with her perfect rendition, and we are sure Kajol will do justice to the "hat ke" track. Though definitely not in the same league as the evergreen classic picturised on the original showman Raj Kapoor and eternal beauty Vyjayantimala.
To sum up, U, Me Aur Hum is a good album by Vishal, with a few excellent numbers and a couple of average ones. As in the latter Vishal has compromised with his style to match the commercial feel of the movie. However, Vishal and the talented lyricist Munna Dhiman (who has penned some excellent lyrics and does not make one miss Gulzar Sahab much), deserve applause for the offering, whose outcome will depend largely on the success of the movie.
Plusses The way 'U Me Aur Hum' had arrived into the charts, it has seemed that in week two it would storm further up. However, challenge from the top has been tough and the result is that this Vishal Bhardwaj score has remained stable within Top-5. While 'Jee Le' and 'Dil Dhakda' have already been popular, 'Saiyaan' should only be following suit!
Minuses Ajay Devgan and Kajol in a hardcore romantic entertainer is not everyone's idea which could have it's effect on perception created for the film's music
Plusses After a fortnight at #5, ‘U Me Aur Hum’ shows a minor decline by a spot. Not quite bothering though since there are number of other entertaining songs in ‘U Me Aur Hum’ which are waiting to be unveiled. Also, in the process of making an impression in the charts, it has already left ‘Krazzy 4’ far behind (the film releases on the same day as ‘U Me Aur Hum’) which is not able to find a place in the charts in spite of SRK power!
Minuses Vishal Bhardwaj’s music typically takes time to grow. For some impatient folks, it may prove to be a hindrance!

Plusses 'U Me Aur Hum' is back in Top-5 with the fourth song from the film, the title song, already on air. This leaves the 'bhangra' number 'Phatte' as the only one remaining to be unveiled!
Minuses Vishal Bhardwaj's music typically takes time to grow. For some impatient folks, it may prove to be a hindrance!
Plusses 'U Me Aur Hum' stays on into Top-5 but just about. With majority of ammunition out in open for this Vishal Bhardwaj soundtrack, it is a matter of showing good sustaining power in time to come.
Minuses With the film still being around 20 days away, the buzz has gone down a little. The makers have to get extra aggressive to help it survive the euphoria expected to arrive in the form of 'Tashan'.
Jee Le (Singer: Adnan Sami, Shreya Ghoshal) Rating: 6/10 Adnan Sami, the man with versatile talents takes the words penned by Munna Dhiman and notes of composer Vishal Bhardwaj to a flashy treat with his vocal escalations. However, Jee Le is bundled with pauses which hamper its effectiveness. Shreya Ghoshal is Adnan’s partner in this duet and voices her lines well enough. Also, there is one more unknown female voice whose Spanish accent is captivating.
U Me Aur Hum (Singer: Shreya Ghoshal) Rating: 5/10 The title track of U Me Aur Hum is a solo number crooned by Shreya Ghoshal. The number is simple and suave but lacks the melodious retreat that holds on your interest till the very end. The track begins with English lyrics sung by an unknown male singer, and from thereon it is taken up by singer Shreya Ghoshal.
Saiyaan (Singer: Sunidhi Chauhan) Rating: 5/10 Saiyaan starts off with the keyboard stroken and takes a naughty route to a peppy track rendered by Sunidhi Chauhan. The track is well written but isn’t well composed as it fails to hold your interest barely a minute after it begins. Kajol will have to work really hard to make people make notice of this track.
Phatte (Singer: Adnan Sami, Sunidhi Chauhan) Rating: 3/10 The basic aspect of playback singing is that the singer’s voice should compliment the actor’s personality but here, Adnan Sami does not even close to Ajay Devgan’s image. This will be really tough for the actor to carry off such a heavy voice. And in Phatte, the duo of Adnan and Sunidhi go completely crazy over the elite tune of Vishal Bhardwaj. The complete composition is horrendous and nothing else.
Dil Dhakda Hai (Singer: Adnan Sami, Shreya Ghoshal) Rating: 4/10 Words like Dhakda instead of Dhadka , and Lafda are the highlight of this track. The song is narrative and overtly filmy. The melodic mood will missed in this romantic film with songs like these making a dry impression.
U Me Aur Hum – Part 2 (Singer: Vishal Bhardwaj) Rating: 6/10 Vishal Bhardwaj grabs the mike for the first time in the second version of U Me Aur Hum. Surprisingly, the composer manages to pull it off (more to sound technology than his original voice!) and give a better track towards the end. The guitar and piano strokes in the backdrop just make the listening experience worthwhile.
Plusses Will the film's release help this Vishal Bhardwaj score to scale further heights? Somehow 'U Me Aur Hum' has been stuck in the middle of the charts ever since it arrived with 'Phatte' being the only number waiting to be unveiled.
Plusses Continuing to maintain it's #5 position in the charts, 'U Me Aur Hum' can now see it's positioning improve by maximum one position (with 'Jodhaa Akbar' as the only album which may come down). This too is possible provided the movie works at the box office (which seems likely).
Minuses Of what one has seen of 'Phatte' so far, the choreography/picturisation has a strong sense of déjà vu and isn't as innovative as some of the other tracks from the film so far
Plusses 'U Me Aur Hum' is perhaps the only album in last so many months which has been so consistent in the middle of the charts ever since it's arrival. However, it seems unlikely that it would be able to break into Top-3 with the way 'Race', 'Jannat' and 'Tashan' are performing.
Minuses Title song 'U Me Aur Hum' could have been used more in the film's narrative as a background piece
Plusses A week after the film's release, 'U Me Aur Hum' falls down by a spot instead of gaining some spots up in the charts. A good score, it now is under threat of not managing to move up in the charts any further as other albums around it have given this Vishal Bhardwaj soundtrack quite some competition.
Minuses 'U Me Aur Hum' has been plain unfortunate not to get the kind of escalated sales it deserved. Otherwise, this predominantly melodious album had all in it to turn out to be a big success.
