COMEDY IS THE NEW word for condescension in the Bollywood Filmmaking Lexicon, up top next to the beloved ‘dada’. Not to be confused with Saurav Ganguly, dada is attributed to any small-timer working on a film-set insignificant enough to be addressed by his name. Comedy in Bollywood is that all-encompassing genre that commands little or no dedication from above-the-line professionals. If, by mistake, one demanded excellence in craft the reply would be an ‘Are you out of your mind?’ diatribe. All that comedy requires are three or four reasonably saleable male stars, some eye-candy, and then, well, anything goes. So we have Sunday, yet another comedy that takes itself as seriously as its predecessors. It disguises itself as a comic thriller, dabbling in many genres without fidelity to any one. Some of 2007’s independent films were accused of being slow as if to say great effort went into appreciating the work, testing the accuser’s patience. Well, Sunday does, as did its ancestors, take forever to begin. A series of introductions of the actors expend 45 minutes, and most of our inquisitiveness while we wait for the film to start. Sunday opens with a screeching murder, and the discovery of the body. Before you wear your detective borsalinos you are introduced to a different kind of cop — Ajay Devgan’s ACP Rajveer — a law-enforcer both heroic and corrupt. His introductory chase involves incessant pauses and three different camera angles in the jumpings, duckings and kickings an action sequence requires. An elaborate ventriloquism introduces Ayesha Takia’s Seher, a dubbing artist who suffers the memory loss that inspires the plot and the title — she can’t account for a whole Sunday. A tacky nightclub introduces the item number starring Tusshar Kapoor. It is in the nightclub that something happened to Seher; something she struggles to piece together.
Next is Arshad Warsi’s turn to be introduced as taxi-driver Bhallu. It’s difficult to believe the film’s intros aren’t yet dispensed — what with Irrfan Khan’s aspiring filmstar auditioning for roles in Delhi, the film’s stock McGuffin villains, the film’s real villains and the film’s ending itself remaining to be introduced. It is when Sunday’s credits roll, accompanied by the in-vogue outtakes, that the negligible plot can be deciphered, if one cares to make the effort. Of course Rajveer and Seher have to involve themselves in some romance that shall not betray the accepted notion of an allgenres- inclusive-Bollywood-Comedy. Retribution comes when Devgan’s corrupt cop ends up married when all he was interested in — true to his vice — was seducing the damsel-in-distress. There would be better hope for mainstream Bollywood cinema as soon as watching a Bollywood comedy became an embarrassing confession. Like owning up to a drunken act.
After Aamir Khan proving his credentials as an actor and director with Taare Zameen Per, it’s Ajay Devgan who is now directing his first film named U, Me Aur Hum. He would be playing the lead role in the movie along with his wife Kajol.
If you look into the past, everyone from the great Raj Kapoor and Manoj Kumar in Bollywood, to Clint Eastwood in Hollywood have comfortably juggled both the jobs of acting and directing. However, today’s generation feels that it’s much better doing a single job on the sets.
Today most of the actor’s in Bollywood are moving out of their comfort zone and investing money by making movies that they want to see.
Shah Rukh Khan is one such actor who has produced many movies under his home production, the recent being Om Shanti Om.
With the appreciation that Aamir has received for coming up with a subject that touched many , let’s see whether Ajay is able to do the same.
Mumbai, Feb 01: Actors Ajay Devgan and Kajol team up to stop a war between animated characters in what will be Bollywood`s first attempt at a live action animation film.
The husband-wife duo play themselves while sharing screen space with 50 animated characters in "Toonpur Ka Superhero," a film being made on the lines of Hollywood`s "Space Jam" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" .
"Ajay and Kajol will accidentally get transported into the world of cartoons who are engaged in a war against each other and they will try to save the situation," said director Kireet Khurana.
Although Hollywood has used the technique several times, most recently in last year`s hit "Alvin and the Chipmunks," the makers of "Toonpur Ka Superhero" hope to cash in on Bollywood`s first experiment with the format.
"It is a very new thing here (in India) and we are hopeful that it will work," Khurana said.
The much talked about film 'London Dreams', which started off with hype went into the shelves for a long time due to many reasons. Now, the London based producer Paramjeet Singh has decided to get it back to life and the film will be starring Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in the lead, the flick will be directed by the noted director Raj Kumar Santoshi. The film is based on the Hollywood hit 'Amadeus' and already a huge amount of Rs 10 Crores have been spent for the signing part.
It now appears that the team of the much talked about film 'Sunday' are busy trying to get into a damage control act to get the film on track. The lead pair of Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia were seen at the prominent multiplex theatre in Mumbai to watch the movie along with the winners of a contest. Unfortunately, the film has not been able to create an impact as expected but then the stars are making enough noise to ensure the post film publicity goes well and gets in some mileage. Good luck with that Ajay and Ayesha !!

Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia, stars of the new comic-thriller film SUNDAY provided their own thrills to an audience of Globus employees, at a special screening of the movie arranged as part of MiD DAY's new 'Movie with Stars Contest'.
MiD DAY, India's leading afternooner, has further cemented its commitment to its chosen cause of Making Work Fun for the Young, Urban, Mobile, Professional of India, or the YUMPI as they fondly call him, through the launch of their newest Bollywood property, the 'MiD DAY - MAKE WORK FUN - Movie with Stars Contest'. Through this contest, not just the winner, but his or her entire office gets to share a really fun evening out, watching a special screening of the selected film along with Bollywood Stars.
Indrani, the winner of the first MiD DAY - MAKE WORK FUN - Movie with Stars Contest was delighted at the prospect of meeting with the Bollywood celebrities. 'I've always enjoyed both Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia's performances. I think Ajay is an especially intense actor, and I'm looking forward to meeting them both,' she said.
'I receive a copy of MiD DAY in my office, and read it regularly. I especially enjoy the Fun@Work section, reading about events that have happened in other offices, and that's what inspired me to enter this contest. I'm delighted to have won and am looking forward to sharing this fun evening with my colleagues,' she added.
Ajay Devgan and Ayesha Takia created quite a stir as they entered the PVR cinema along with fellow actor Manoj Tiwari and Kumar Mangat, producer of the film Sunday. After felicitating the winner, they proceeded to take photos with everyone from the office, and then joined them in the viewing of their film.
Abhijit Pradhan, Director Sales and Marketing, MiD DAY Multimedia commented, 'Today, young urban professionals, who are also typically MiD DAY's readers, work harder and longer than ever. MiD DAY has made it a cause to bring the spirit of fun into their daily lives at work, through editorial content and the promotions we run. The Movie with Stars Contest is our second Bollywood property, after the Bollywood Lunch Contest*, that ensures entire offices can join in and have a great time along with people they work with.'
With ‘Babuji Dhirey Chalna’, Anjana Sukhani had served a warning to Anil Kapoor to go slow. Anyways, now Anjana is once again in the limelight with the film SUNDAY and it is expected that once again people will fall into her luscious trap. Now what remains to be seen is how the audience reacts to her role in this comedy thriller. We recently caught up with the sexy dancer-actress and had a lengthy talk on her new film SUNDAY, her career, etc.
Tell us something about the film SUNDAY. SUNDAY is an excellent light hearted comedy which also has lots of thrills, suspense and other ingredients. In this film I play the role of a fashion designer called Ritu who is basically from Delhi and ‘bindaas’ as well as ‘out-spoken’. Whenever she designs a dress, she invariably gives it to her best friend Sahaer (played by Ayesha Takia). The main idea of the film is a missing ‘Sunday’ from the lives of the characters; and everyone is responsible for this.
You are opposite Ajay Devgan in this film. Look, the lead pair of the film is Ajay and Ayesha. In addition, Arshad Warsi, Irfaan Khan and I play roles of bluffers and one of us has done something wrong. If you think that I am very close to Ajay in the film, you are mistaken.
In your last film SALAAM-E-ISHQ your chemistry with Anil Kapoor was appreciated. Will there be something in SUNDAY too? No. The concept of this film is just the opposite of that in SALAAM-E-ISHQ. The story of the previous film included the closeness of a young girl with a middle-aged man.
The audience’s expectations regarding your performance have soared after SALAAM-E-ISHQ. Do you think that your performance in SUNDAY will help them to repose their faith on you? Look, each film is of a different genre and the character is different and we have to work according to it. Personally, I always try to give the best as an actor to each film I do. Like in the last film, this time also I have worked with my heart and I hope the audience will appreciate my performance and I will meet their expectations.
In addition to SUNDAY, you are also featuring in Rohit Shetty’s GOLMAAL RETURNS. Do you have any comments on this? GOLMAAL RETURNS will be my second comedy film in which there are four heroes and four heroines. The specialty of this film is that each couple here has a different story and that is linked to comedy. I am opposite Tushaar Kapoor in this film.
Some might say that it is a bit too late for an actor like Ajay Devgan to start his own official website but then as they say ‘it is better late than never’.
His brand new site which is to be launched by the first week of February will be known as http://www.ajaydevgan.net. Ajay’s strong fan-base was only too eager to know all about his forthcoming releases and other personal details about him.
One of the reasons that Ajay wants to have his own website is the need to provide audiences genuine information as against the false speculated news. Ajay’s site will also have the actor personally answering his fans’ queries and issues.

Regardless of an ordinary first week, Rohit Shetty directed SUNDAY still has en edge as it enters into the second week. This is because the latest release of this Friday, RAMA RAMA KYA HAI DRAMAAA has opened to a poor response all over, hence making SUNDAY a weekend favorite all over again.
Since there is no other release this week apart from this Rajpal Yadav-Neha Dhupia starrer, it paves the way clear for this suspense comedy which so far has seen mixed response from both within and outside the industry. Nevertheless, when compared to countless other brainless flicks that have gone on to be a success in past and present, SUNDAY carries some semblance in the proceedings.
With MITHYA and SUPERSTAR, the twin releases of next week being the only competition before JODHAA AKBAR strikes on 15th February, SUNDAY would be looking forward to stabilizing this week and help it's investors get past the safety mark.
If all goes according to the storyboard plans, 2008 could well be the year of the epics — Ramayana and Mahabharat — on television and films.
Sample this: besides two televised shows on Ramayana on rival channels, a small screen version of Mahabharat, everyone who’s anyone in Indian filmdom is making an epic on 35mm — Raj Kumar Santoshi (Ajay Devgan-Kajol in the lead), Aparna Sen (who’s finalising her cast for Ramayana), Ashok Banker’s Ramayana series which is being adapted (with an international and Indian cast) by a Hollywood studio, Bobby Bedi’s Ramayana, Rituparno Ghosh’s Mahabharat (with Bipasha Basu as Draupadi), BR Chopra’s two-part Mahabharat (with a budget of Rs 100 crore), Ekta Kapoor’s Mahabharat and even animated versions of both epics by Firoz Nadiadwala.
And surprise, surprise! A global audience is what everyone’s craving for too. Santoshi for example has plans of hiring an international special effects team to give his Ramayana a “global” look.
On television, 20 years later, Ramayana returns with grander sets, new faces a fusion of live action and animation and hopes of creating the same magic that reshaped TRP history forever. Banker’s version of Ramayana, which goes on floors by the middle of this year has had the likes of Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman wanting to be part of it.
Sen’s Ramayana will be told from Sita’s point of view and the talented filmmaker plans to make this film in English and sell it internationally. Even Rituparno’s Mahabharat is targetted for an international audience. What has made epics the stuff of celluloid and small screen fantasies this year in particular?
Filmmaker Ravi Chopra who has plans of an ambitious Mahabharat (a six-hour drama with a dream cast and possibly Amitabh Bachchan as Bhishma and Shah Rukh Khan in a key role) says, “Our epics are a reflection of our value system. An epic like Mahabharat has lots of avenues to be explored even if it is repeatedly made. I am attempting Mahabharat because no one has done a good job of it on 35 mm. My film will be made this year and hopefully released too.”
Does the SMS-happy generation really appreciate epics for entertainment? Shailaja Kejriwal, creative head, NDTV Imagine certainly thinks so, “We have made Ramayana for a generation that just knows the story in bits and pieces. Given that 50 per cent of India’s population is young, it will be refreshing for this generation to watch and imbibe good value systems.” A thought that Shakti Sagar, the show’s producer echoes, “Stories from epics are our cultural heritage and they always work when they are transformed into serials or films. Our youngsters are sure to like it.”
But what’s with the veritable deluge of epics? Actor and politician Nitish Bharadwaj who became a celeb after playing Lord Krishna in Mahabharat says, “If someone like Santoshi is attempting to make Ramayana, then you have to give him due credit. He is no ordinary director and his visions would be surely different from others. What all filmmakers will have to keep in mind is that every Indian epic character is a larger-than-life character and will have to be portrayed accordingly. There will be and has been many versions of Ramayana and Mahabharat, but only the best will win hearts.”
Once the end credits roll by, may the best epic steal the show, beyond covers.
... We then ask him another smokin’ question: Are he and Ajay Devgan still at loggerheads? “Ajay is a very quiet guy. He is a very nice person and the last thing he needs is a question like this, which he is always being asked. I know Kajol very well. We both thought that this question will die a natural death but it did not. Honestly, I and Ajay don’t know each other well enough that we should dislike each other. But we know each other well enough to like and respect each other. Main Geeta pe haath rakhke kasam khata hoon that I have no problems with Ajay Devgan!” he says with a smile.
... For Ajay Devgan, it's still fickledom, when it comes to proving his mettle at the BO. Devgan, who last tasted success with his tomfoolery in Golmaal , has two films vying for public acclaim, currently.
While one of them — Halla Bol — has been rejected, his second film, Sunday , has managed to draw in decent crowds. If Halla Bol , netting a gross of just Rs.14 crore flopped, then Sunday seemed to have scored due to its quirky tenor.
And now, with the promos of U, Me aur Hum showcasing Devgan in his third avatar — as a romantic hero against wife Kajol — the focus seems to be fixed on him for the next few months. Technically speaking, Devgan is invincible as the sombre action hero. His films like Gangajal and Apharan have won critical and mass acclaim, catapulting the actor in the top rung.
She came on a ‘flying visit’. Five minutes of her was what we saw. Wearing a pair of brown-glassed shades, a black and white-striped kameez, and with her open hair cascading up to her shoulders, Kajol came and went before most realised.
But, the five minutes saw everything that we have come to associate with this versatile actress. There were a million expressions if that is possible, some measured looks at the camera which showed she had been there, seen that as well. How quick could quick be? Well, there was the answer. In her coming. Her talking. Her disappearance.
In Pune for the launch of a posh residential complex, she did exactly that. She cut the ribbon, had a quick session with the press, and was gone with the wind. But, she did talk about U Me Aur Hum, her hubby Ajay Devgan’s directorial debut. While the media has been going on and on about Ajay being compared to Aamir Khan — not a great thought, since the latter did brilliantly in his debut recently — Kajol, the loving wife, sounded justifiably optimistic. The shutterbugs went click, click, click, while she handled the questions addressed to her with practised dexterity and precision. Why was the meeting so brief? “That was the way it was scheduled,” said a source.
Will she strike an exclusive posture? “No, I am afraid she can’t. We have to rush,” said he. For the brief period she was there, however, Kajol managed to weave her characteristic spell. People hung on to every word she said, and waited for more. But, before the joy could sink in, she left for the airport in her black BMW. She vanished from the eye’s view, but not before she had said that there was something really good about Pune! Now, didn’t everyone like that? You bet they did.
Ajay Devgan isn't the archetypal Bollywood hero. He leans towards roles that are complex and, sometimes, broody and dark. And he doesn't enjoy being the life of every party in Tinseltown and, instead, chooses to spend his personal time in the company of his actress wife Kajol and their five-year-old daughter, Nysa.
So what if he doesn't have Shah Rukh Khan's heart melting smile, Hrithik Roshan's taut body or Salman Khan's intoxicating charm to endear him to moviegoers? At least, he has substance, principles and passion - and that is where his magnetism lies.
He is a serious actor in the same vein as the Manoj Bajpai, Irrfan Khan, Naseeruddin Shah and Boman Irani. And he has branched out into producing and directing under his film banner, Devgan Films.
The son of stunt choreographer Veeru, Devgan made his Bollywood debut with Phool Aur Kante in 1991 and walked away with Filmfare's Best Debut award for his performance. The roles he landed thereafter were in action flicks, most of which didn't fare well at the box-office.
Tired of the monotony of playing muscle-flexing, Rambo-type characters, he decided to take a stab at comedy with Ishq (1997) and was paired with Kajol (they weren't married then), Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla.
Devgan's role in Pyaar To Hona Hi Thi, also opposite Kajol, was lapped up by moviegoers and critics alike and the film ended up one of the biggest commercial hits of 1998. The following year, he gained even more prominence with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's critically acclaimed romance, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, opposite Aishwarya Rai and Salman.
Along with the hits, Devgan was plagued by a plethora of box-office disasters, but the offers kept on increasing over the years.
His most impressive films to date have been Mahesh Bhatt's Zakhm (1998), RGV's Company (2002), Rajkumar Santoshi's The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002), Prakash Jha's Gangaajal (2003) and Rituparno Ghosh's Raincoat.
In 2006, he was praised for his performance in Omkara, which was Vishal Bharadwaj's Hindi adaptation of Othello. While Devgan took the Best Actor honours at several award ceremonies, his co-star Saif Ali Khan took home the Best Villain awards.
Last year, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, a remake of the classic Sholay, was slated by critics. While their comments were largely aimed at the director RGV and not at any of the actors, it nevertheless stained the veteran actor.
After Halla Bol and Sunday, which enjoyed moderate success since being released, moviegoers are looking forward to seeing Devgan as Kajol's love interest again in U, Me Aur Hum, which is co-produced under the actor's own film banner and Eros.
In a recent interview with IndiaFM, he said: "It's too early to talk about the film. It's a romance about relationships and has a healthy dose of humour and drama."
Fans can check him out in Mehbooba, a love triangle opposite Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala, and in the sequel to Golmaal.
Hmm, if I didn't know any better, I would say Devgan, who has revamped his image with much success about three years ago, appears to be vying for more commercial releases these days. Very interesting indeed!
Wirklich sehr interessant!
Producer-actor Shah Rukh Khan did enough and more to promote Om Shanti Om. But actor-debutant director Ajay Devgan seems to be doing more to promote his home production venture U, Me Aur Hum. The actor, who marks his directorial debut with this one took it upon himself to shoot for the ad commercial of Sangini jewellery, that'll feature Ajay and Kajol. Shot in Filmistan only recently, the ad will hit the small screens in mid-March, and will prove to be an extended marketing strategy for the promotion of U, Me Aur Hum.
In fact, the storyline of the ad commercial has been formulated keeping in mind the storyline of the romantic feel-good U, Me Aur Hum. Ajay and Kajol are on a cruise when it begins to rain stars. Well, let's hope the movie proves to be a gem, and worth it's weight in gold, too.
