"Gangajal" fallout sees Karachites taking law into their own hands - May 20

Karachi, May 20: With the recent increase in the incidents of people setting robbers afire publicly or beating them to death, it is believed that Bollywood film "Gangajal" has cast a long lasting impression on the Pakistani populace.

The spurt in incidents where people took law into their own hands has taken aback the law enforcing authorities, who are reportedly baffled how to stop the trend.

Instead of handing over the robbers to the law enforcers for justice, people prefer to teach them a lesson themselves, torturing and eventually setting them afire in broad day light, ignoring all social, religious and judicial aspects of the barbaric act, much like the end of film "Gangajal" when the main actor Ajay Devgan kills local politico-goon by drowning him into river Ganga.

Litterateurs feel that the outburst from among the people is a result of frustration which crept into them after seeing that there was no change in system even after a democratic government assumed office in Islamabad.

"This is an outcome of violent movies, especially Bollywood ones, and videogames. People, consciously and unconsciously, learn how to torture people, besides becoming dead from inside, feeling no pain or empathy for others. The media, political leaders and every responsible citizen and member of the civil society needs to discourage this trend. It is against humanity. No law, religion or society, supports this barbaric act. It is very dangerous, and if it is adopted regularly, as is being seen, there is no extent to the damage it can do to society," the Daily Times quoted University of Karachi (KU) Chairman of Sociology Fateh Muhammad Burfat, as saying.

He said violence perpetuates violence. "These are extra judicial killings. If the people take law into their hands, then the whole constitution will be in perils. No body will care about the law and the law of the jungle will prevail. After the February 18 elections, the people increased their expectations. When high expectations are not met it leads to frustration.

People need the solutions to their problems on an urgent basis. This is why citizens are taking the law into their own hands. Frustration over poverty, unemployment, political instability and the growing income gap is coming to the surface," added Burfat.

He further said: "I have also been a victim of street crime twice, but I do not support such treatment of the robbers. The police should realize their role otherwise they can also be the victim of an angry mob. I condemn this trend and appeal to responsible citizens to come forward and convince others of how wrong this is."

Bewusst oder unbewusst lernen die Menschen dadurch, wie andere foltert, verhärten sich innerlich und empfinden keinen Schmerz oder Mitgefühl für die Opfer. Medien, Politiker und verantwortungsbewusste Bürger müssen diesem Trend entgegenwirken. Das sind Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit, von keinem Gesetz und keiner Religion gedeckt. Diese Entwicklung ist sehr gefährlich, und wenn solche Akte zur Gewohnheit werden, wonach es aussieht, ist nicht abzuschätzen, welchen Schaden die Gesellschaft dadurch nimmt," zitierte die Daily Times Fateh Muhammad Burfad, Leiter des soziologischen Instituts der Universität von Karachi. Dieser sagte außerdem, dass Gewalt Gegengewalt erzeugt: "Diese Tötungen stehen außerhalb des Rechtssystems. Dass die Leute das Gesetz in die eigenen Hände nehmen, entzieht unserem Staat die Existenzgrundlage. Keiner wird sich mehr an Gesetze halten, und es wird das Recht des Stärkeren herrschen. Nach den Wahlen vom 18. Februar hatten die Leute hohe Erwartungen. Diesen wurde nicht entsprochen, und das führte zur Frustation. Man muss sich dringend um die Probleme der Menschen kümmern. Es kommt zur Selbstjustiz, weil genau das nicht geschieht. Die Enttäuschung über Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit, politische Instabilität und die wachsenden Kluft zwischen arm und reicht bricht sich nun Bahn," fügte Burfat hinzu.
Dann führte er weiter aus: "Ich war zweimal Opfer von Straßenkriminalität, aber ich unterstütze eine solche Behandlung von Räubern nicht. Die Polizei sollte sich ihrer Rolle bewusst werden, sonst könnte es passieren, dass sie ebenfalls von der zornigen Meute angefallen wird. Ich verurteile den Trend zur Gewalt und rufe alle verantwortungsbewussten Bürger auf, Stellung zu beziehen und andere davon zu überzeugen, dass dieses Verhalten falsch ist."

Urdu Press Club of India has honoured star -actor Ajay Devgan and historian-author Amraesh Misra with its prestigious JASARAT AWARD given every five years to people for doing courageous work in their own fields. Last year the award was given to journalist Rajdeep Sardesai for covering Gujrat riots in 2003.

The award this year was given on May 18 at a glittering function held at Kanpur to celebrate the 150th year of 1857, the first War of independence. Ajay Devgan was choosen for doing socially relevant films like Zakham, Bhagat Singh, Gangajal, Apaharan and also selecting a sensitive subject like Alziemers for his debu direction in U Me Aur Hum, whereas Mr. Amaresh Misra was given the Award for his historic 2000 pages book, War of Civilisation India 1857 A D, which was released recently by the Vice President of India in New Delhi.

In a written statement by Ajay Devgan, he said that Urdu is a language of romance and its contribution to the growth of Indian film industry is immense and infinite. He also congratulated the Urdu Press Club for spreading the message of love peace and harmony in the country. While expressing his anguish at the current situation the star actor in his note said " The First War of Indian Independence 1857 was unitedly fought by all and now it is high time that cutting across all borders we must unitedly fight the growing menance of Terrorism and Communalism on a war footing. The life of ionnocent people is too precious to be blown off into thin air like fire crackers" .

Ajay Devgan gets the Jasarat Award

He's known to be chilled-out, down to earth, a great actor, and now a fabulous director. Ajay Devgan must have taken years of dedication and hard work to attain such a reputation. He has always been known more for his socially relevant films than his comic capers. Finally, here is someone who appreciates his noble work.

The Urdu Press Club of India honored Ajay Devgan with the Jasarat Award at Kanpur. After doing socially relevant films like Zakhm, Legend of Bhagat Singh, Gangaajal, Apaharan, Halla Bol and his directorial debut film, U Me Aur Hum, (which speaks about Alzheimer), he's finally being appreciated. Although Ajay was not present for the award ceremony, he gave his respects in a written statement stating the value of Urdu and its significance in the Indian film industry.

Along with Ajay, the historian author Amaresh Misra was also honored with the Jasarat award.

While Sanjay Dutt has almost patented the art of playing a gangster in dozens of films, he has hardly played the part of a playboy in any of his films. However, his next film release would change it all for him as he would be seen as a rich business tycoon who possesses all the luxuries in the life.

The film is Afzal Khan's MEHBOOBA and Sanju plays the character of Shravan Dhariwal. Playing the role of the most eligible bachelor who leads an envious lifestyle, he loves being in the company of beautiful and desirable women and makes sure that his charm and money get him all that he desires.

One such woman who comes in Sanju's life in MEHBOOBA is Varsha [Manisha Koirala] who refuses to cave in despite all richies presented to her on a platter. Though Sanju ultimately manages to woo her, he has a sinister plan in place which threatens to shatter Manisha's life forever.

What exactly is the playboy's plan here.....?

With Ajay Devgan as the other male lead, MEHBOOBA is a film which has taken almost a decade to reach the finishing line. The film is aiming for a July 2008 release.

It seems that the Health Minister has got something to do with it!

Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss will be happy to note that at least one actor has finally and completely quit smoking. Admits Ajay Devgan, from the sets of Zee TV’s Rock N Roll Family, “Yes, I have completely quit smoking.”

When quizzed about his inspiration, he replies tongue-in-cheek, “Well, the Health Minister has paid me more than the cigarette companies to quit smoking.”

Felt the urge

A source close to Devgan says, “Ajay quit smoking six days ago. He was down with fever and a bad cold last week and on an impulse, decided to kick the butt. Members of his family, wife Kajol and friends had been telling him to quit for years but Ajay’s logic was you-convince-me or I-convince-you, and he wasn’t convinced enough to quit smoking.”

The source continues, “He loved smoking and health reasons weren’t enough to make him quit. Though he got a scare last year when Saif Ali Khan suffered a mini heart attack because of smoking, he didn’t stop but tried cutting down.

But one day, Ajay felt the urge to quit, and he did. He hasn’t puffed even once in the last six days whereas earlier he would sneak off outside to his garden to smoke.”

On-screen freedom, please!

Recently, in Bhopal, Devgan had joined Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore in taking a dig at Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss where he stressed that in a democracy everybody had the freedom of expression, so smoking or drinking on screen ought not be banned.

Devgan says: “In the films, when we show someone smoking or drinking, it is for a reason. It is not to promote any cigarette brand or liquor.

If we have to show some historical character; for instance, if I have to make a movie on Winston Churchill, what will I show? I can’t make the movie if there is a ban on showing cigarettes in the film. He used to always have a cigar in his hand.

What do I show then? Should I show a lollipop in Churchill’s mouth? Everyone has his or her responsibilities in place. Everyone knows what is right and wrong for them.”

Jeder hat seinen eigenen Verantwortungsbereich. Jeder weiß, was genau dort richtig und was falsch ist."

Ajay Devgan plans to revive sister-in-law Tanisha’s sagging career by relaunching her in his film

Ajay Devgan seems to have taken over the mantle of reviving sister-in-law Tanisha’s sagging career. Ajay is all set to launch three films.

The third film, which is still in the scripting stage, will be a re-launch for Tanisha whose career has been lying low since her last big film Neal N Nikki’s failure at the box office. Things though are yet in the process of being finalised.

When asked about the project, Ajay Devgan’s spokesperson Parag Desai refused to divulge any details. “The film is in the scripting stage and things are not yet confirmed. The cast will be officially announced only after the script is ready,” he insists.

After Sarkar Raj, where Tanisha is all set to play a typical Maharashtrian married woman, she is also doing a Bengali film directed by Gautam Haldar with mom Tanuja.

With brother-in-law Ajay taking special interest, Tanisha’s career finally seems to be heading in the right direction.

Ajay Devgan hat anscheinend die Schirmherrschaft über die stockende Karriere seiner Schwägerin Tanisha übernommen. Er hat ja vor, drei neue Filme herauszubringen. Der dritte Film, für den gerade das Drehbuch geschrieben wird, soll ein Neustart für Tanisha werden, deren Karriere seit ihrem letzten großen Film und Boxofficeflop NEAL´N´NIKKI ziemlich auf Eis liegt. Die Sache ist aber noch nicht in trockenen Tüchern.
Über das Projekt befragt, weigerte sich Ajay Devgans Sprecher, Parag Desai, irgendwelche Details bekanntzugeben: "Das Drehbuch ist noch nicht fertig und es gibt keinerlei feste Planungen. Die Besetzung wird offiziell bekannt gegeben, wenn wir ein komplettes Script haben."
Außer SARKAR RAJ, in dem Tanisha eine typische Ehefrau aus Maharashtra spielt, dreht sie einen Bengalifilm mit ihrer Mom Tanuja, bei dem Gautam Haldar Regie führt. Unter der Aufsicht von Schwager Ajay scheint also Tanishas Karriere endlich in die richtige Richtung zu laufen.

Time to raise a celebration toast for the two debutant directors of Bollywood - Ajay Devgan & Jaideep Sen.

In this era of fierce competition where films hardly reach the 50 days landmark, Ajay Devgan's U, ME AUR HUM & Jaideep's KRAZZY 4 has successfully managed to complete 50 days at the box office. Both had released on the same day 11th April.

While all the eyes were set on KRAZZY 4 and U ME AUR HUM clash and much competition was hyped before the release, nothing as such happened post the release. And now the scenario is such that both the makers are enjoying their success.

If KRAZZY 4 attracted audience because of its three notable item numbers by Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Rakhi Sawant than it were the good music and storyline that pulled the audience for U ME AUR HUM.

Rakesh Roshan's KRAZZY 4, directed by debutant Jaideep Sen under the FilmKraft banner, was a comical satire on society about four lovable mental patients and starred Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Suresh Menon, Rajpal Yadav and Juhi Chawla in the lead.

Ajay Devgan's directorial debut U, ME AUR HUM under the banner of Devgan films presented by Eros International was a highly emotional and mature love story and featured Ajay Devgan & Kajol in the lead along with Divya Dutta, Sumeet Raghvan, Isha Sharvani and Karan Khanna.

It so happened that when Anil Devgan was auditioning for Raju Chacha produced by Ajay Devgan. During the audition, he spotted a blue-eyed lad and met him for the role of Ajay’s nephew.
But later he realised that the boy was a wee bit older than what the character demanded. The story doesn’t end there. Nine years later, Anil was auditioning for a fresh face to play the main lead in his upcoming romantic film Haal-e-Dil. Anil was very meticulously going through the profiles of the male actors as he was to star opposite Amita (being launched by her father Kumar Mangat). Little did Anil know then, that the actor Nakuul Mehta that he finalised for the role was the same boy that he had shortlisted during the making of Raju Chacha.

Later, during the shooting of Haal-e-Dil when Nakuul and Anil were chatting up in Ladakh, the revelation took place. When Anil heard the connection he simply quipped in his Punjabi accent yaar hero tujhe mere haatho’n hi banna tha…tab nahi ab sahi…oye kee farak penda…

It seems that apna Bhajji is going out of his way, be it on or off the field. The spinner appeared as a guest on the sets of Zee’s Rock N Roll Family. His antics on the sets angered Ajay Devgan, one of the anchors for the show. As a result, Ajay gave Harbhajan a piece of his mind.

Harhajan, who has been a great fan of Kajol since his college days, agreed to come on the show only because of her. During the show he even admitted that he had a crush on Kajol.
A source in the production house said, “Harbhajan was enthralled to see Kajol. He confessed that Kajol was his favourite actor. He also told everybody that he lost count of the number of times he has watched Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Since then, he has had a huge crush on her due to her Punjabi kudi image in the movie.”

Harbhajan was visibly smitten by Kajol’s presence and he was in a rollicking mood. The source added, “He also sang ‘Tujhe Dekha toYeh Jana Sanam’ from DDLJ for Kajol. It was not in the script and the creative team was more than happy to add it to the footage. Kajol, on the other hand, was floored with the continuous shower of compliments, and she was giggling throughout. Bhajji’s funny body language made her blush too. In return, she complimented Bhajji and told him that he was a better singer than her very good friend Shah Rukh Khan. Ajay was watching it all without uttering a single word. But, this time, he did not take it in the right manner.”

Ajay shot back. The source said, “It was quite weird that Ajay reacted in such a way. He snapped at Bhajji saying singing is not his forte. His expertise is cricket and he should concentrate on that only.”

Harbhajan was quite surprised with the reply and preferred to smile at him. “He was visibly calm after that,” the source concluded.

Sie gab seine Komplimente zurück und sagte ihm, dass er besser singen könne als ihr guter Freund SRK. Ajay schaute sich das Ganze an, ohne einen Mucks von sich zu geben. Aber er hat es wohl in den falschen Hals bekommen."
Ajay schlug zurück. Die Quelle sagte dazu: "Es war ziemlich befremdlich, dass Ajay so reagierte. Er fuhr Bhajji an, Singen sei wohl nicht seine Stärke. Er solle sich lieber aufs Kricketspielen konzentrieren."
