When Kajol and Karan Johar get together, you can be assured that the concept of friendship will be taken to an altogether new level; such is their camaraderie with each other.
The two were present at producer Ashvin Gidwani’s book-reading-cum-photography art exhibition to hail his upcoming theatrical venture, based on Paulo Coelho’s bestseller.
After the two shared their insights on the book, and read out their favourite parts from it, anchor for the evening, the entertaining Gaurav Kapur, asked Kajol: “You read a lot to your daughter, right?” to which Kajol blankly stared into space, assuming the question was for Karan! That made the guests go into splits, with Karan adding: “Yes, I have a secret daughter...”
The entertainment continued as the guests took in the phenomenal paintings which translated the book into pictures, done by artists Vinay Mahidhar, Amit Mehra, Ashok Roy, Ashok Dilwali and Ashvin Mehta.
Curator Kalpana Shah, director Sunil Shanbag and playwright Deepa Gahlot spoke about the uphill, but satisfying task of doing this play and exhibition, as guests including Homi Adajania, Vivek Jain, Sarayu Doshi and others enjoyed the creative evening.
I Choose the script when I am offered a film, not Ajay, Aamir or SRK - 19 July
'U, Me Aur Hum' may not have got a great opening like Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om, but Kajol is happy that she was a part of the project.
Kajol'U, Me Aur Hum' may not have got a great opening like Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om, but Kajol is happy that she was a part of the project. When I meet her at her actor-director husband Ajay Devgan's office in Juhu, Kajol confesses that it was not very tough to play the role. Kajol adds that she was confident that people would be able to identify with the role, when Ajay narrated the role to her. Here is a chat with the actor.
"I had a superb director to back me. I should undoubtedly give the entire credit to my director for the ease with which the character of Piya has unfolded on the screen in 'U, Me Aur Hum'. The best thing that I liked about my character in the film was that besides the fact that she was normal and not handicapped in any way, Piya had a wicked sense of humor and at the same time, she was a little vulnerable too."
Kajol kick started her career with the film 'Bekhudi', more than a decade ago, with Kamal Sadanah as her leading man. Kajol is practical enough to confess that her role in 'U, Me Aur Hum' is not the best in her career till date. "Every role that I have done has been the best at that particular point of time in my career. Since my latest release is 'U, Me Aur Hum', I feel that it is my best as of now." Kajol quips.
She admits that she is far too picky as an actor. "I am lucky that I have been approached by various kinds of directors, in spite of the fact that I am very choosy. The problem is that my expectations as an actor are quite high and I am not getting the kind of roles that I want to do and I am not interested in doing the kinds of roles that I am offered", she avers.
What is interesting about Kajol is that she is capable of throwing surprises not only as an actor who gets into the skin of various characters but also as a person who can shock you out of your wits with statements you do not expect at all. "I want to do films that I want to watch. I watch very few films for my entertainment. As far as I am concerned, happy and positive films make me laugh. I am not against other kinds of films, though I may not be tempted to be a part of it. For instance, if tomorrow Mira Nair offers me a comedy film, I'd gladly grab it, without a second thought."
She disagrees when you tell her that married actors are not accepted by the audience when they set out to stage their comebacks in films. "For your information, I acted with Ajay in films like 'Raju Chacha', 'Dil Kya Kare' etc only after I was married to him. Didn't 'Fanaa click'? I had acted in it after my baby Nysa was born. Didn't I? I think that if you choose the right role, you can click, especially if you are a married actor, that too with a baby. If I had made my come back with a film in which I played a college girl with a short skirt, I am sure I would not have succeeded. You should know to choose the right role."
Kajol confesses that she has mellowed a lot and is not the fire-brand rebel that she once was. "I think motherhood changes you in many ways. Motherhood removes the chasma which is experience and you start looking at people in a different way and also judge them in a different way. Your perceptions about people too changes. The way Nysa looked at people changed my pre-conceived notions too."
She adds, "Today, thanks to my growth as an actor, I feel that I can adapt my technique. I did not know what technique was earlier. I have, over the years, actually leKajolarnt a method to acting, and use it honestly with a lot more expertise and finesse."
Kajol says that then only film which she has signed is 'Toonpur Ka Super Hero'. She adds in the same breath, even before you can ask, that she has not signed any film with Karan or for that matter with Shah Rukh Khan. "Ajay has got nothing to with me doing or not doing a film with Karan or for that matter Shah Rukh Khan. I choose the script every time I am offered a film, not Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan or for that matter Shah Rukh Khan. Ajay is proud that I choose to do films which I believe in."
She continues. "I have not heard Karan's script. It would not do him and his project justice, if I tell him that I'd do his film without listening to the script, though as a friend, he trusts me enough to let me make a decision and vice versa. Our friendship is so strong that it will stand the test of time, whether we do a film together or not."
Kajol is happy that she agreed to be a part of the TV show 'Rock N Roll Family' with her mother Tanuja and her husband Ajay. "We were offered a lot of reality shows earlier but we kept on declining each of them, although we appeared in one episode of 'Little Champs'. We agreed to be in 'Rock N Roll Family' because of the concept. It is about the family and the principles that we believe in."
Though it was a life long dream of Ajay to wield the megaphone, Kajol says that she does not plan to take up direction. "I'd say that as of now I am not inclined to take up direction, though I do not know what is in store. Unlike Ajay, whose strength as a director is his clarity, I am a selfish actor. Mujhe sirf apne kaam se mutlab hain. I am in fact surprised that Ajay and I never had any disagreement throughout the shooting of the film. I have had some point of disagreement with almost every director with whom I have worked till date. In fact, I'd say that the director Ajay Devgan exceeded my expectations when I worked with him."
"I hope that I have affected Ajay a lot. I have taught him a lot and vice versa. I believe that any marriage works only if there is a lot of give and take between the couple. In fact I agree one hundred per cent with the message that 'U, Me Aur Hum' sets out to drive home. That man makes a problem bigger though it is never bigger than a man. We make the solution impossible, because we do not make an attempt to solve a problem, since we concentrate more on the problem than the solution," she concludes.
Kajol turns a year older on August 5 and though we haven’t heard of any party plans, we are sure that she will prefer to celebrate with family and close friends.
Her last film, hubby Ajay’s directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum , may not have worked at the box office, but that has not had any effect on the bubbly actress. She is very much in demand as far as films are concerned. This year she may be seen with Shah Rukh Khan in Karan Johar’s next directorial venture after Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. We hope she has a great year ahead.
This dusky actress has mastered the art of stealing the hearts of movie buffs with her disarmingly natural portrayals.
But, that is something you would expect from Kajol, the granddaughter of Shobhna Samarth, daughter of Tanuja and niece of Nutan - the actresses who set milestones in Bollywood with their superlative performances. Kajol, who is turning 33 tomorrow, speaks to NT about films, television shows and peace in the country.
‘My biggest wish’ Tell her to reveal her birthday plans and you are treated to her trademark tinkling laughter, which comes straight from the heart. She says, "My life at the moment is going through such a hectic pace that I would rather chill out at home. No news would be good news at this juncture, and making no plans would really make me happy. I just hope to have a very uneventful birthday." But surely, husband Ajay Devgan and her six-year-old daughter Nysa have made some secret plans? To this Kajol says, "I am sure! But Nysa hasn't revealed these plans to me yet. Batayegi, batayegi!" And what is her biggest birthday wish? "I wish for peace in my heart and peace in our country. These ongoing blasts across the nation have disturbed me a lot," she says getting emotional.
On awards Kajol is one of the few actresses in Bollywood who have bagged four Filmfare Awards. And at the rate she's going, the lady is all set to break her maasi Nutan's record who had bagged five Filmfare Awards. Ask her if national award is next on her agenda and she promptly replies, "When you do a particular film, you don't have awards in mind. But, yes, it definitely feels good when you are called as the best amongst your peers and awarded for the same. I wouldn't say that I don't aspire for a national award, but I don't sign films just to get awards."
A class apart The star who has broken the myth about actresses not doing well post-marriage, took a sabbatical for five years and wowed her fans yet again with films like Fanaa and U, Me aur Hum. How did she manage this feat? "I think people have forgotten about actresses like Meena Kumari, Saira Banu etc., who did even better after marriage than before. I am not the sole exception," says she. The talented star will soon be appearing in her home production Toonpur Ka Superhero. Ask her what exactly is the film all about and she says, "As the name suggests, it's a cartoon film and we will have a lot of live characters in it. I can't reveal more than that, you will have to watch this film to know more."
Now that there are talks of the sequel of Andaz Apna Apna being made, would she want to do a role in the film? Kajol says rather candidly, "I don't have an objection to any role as long as it clicks in my head." And does the lady, who has been tagged as the chatterbox of the industry, have any plans to host a chat show on television? "Nobody has come to me with such a proposal, but if something good comes along, why not! I really don't know whether I will be good at it, because despite being a chatterbox, I am not a very public person," she confesses.
Dream pairing There is a lot of buzz about Karan Johar's film - My Name is Khan - in which she will be appearing with Shah Rukh Khan again. Now that's one pairing, which has always been a superhit with the cinegoers. But, isn't she scared of the expectations that people would have from this project? "No, I am not scared! Darna tha toh tab darti jab Bollywood main enter kiya tha - with legacy of my mom, maasi and granny behind me. I take my work seriously, but it doesn't affect my nerves," says Kajol in a cool-as-a-cucumber manner before signing off.
Shakespeare once asked 'What's in a name?' The reason as to why he asked that was probably because, at that time, he surely must not have heard of 'Kajol'. The name Kajol immediately sends electrifying vibes to anyone and everyone who hears it.
Today, the whole of Bollywood is celebrating and has every reason to do so as it is the B-Day of its very own eternal 'Simran' aka Kajol and vice versa! Kajol, for starters, made her acting debut with Rahul Rawail's Bekhudi. Even though the film did not shine at the Box-Office, it gifted Bollywood its very own firebrand actress, Kajol, who later went onto become a name that's synonymous with many smash-hit films. While others demand a Numero Uno status, Kajol is (and forever will be) one actress who simply commands it! Baazigar, DDLJ, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Fanaa etc… are standing testimonies of the same!
Even though many may deny on the face of it, but the eternal truth remains that Kajol's recent comeback in Bollywood has been giving sleepless nights' galore to many heroines. Such is the power of Kajol!
As Kajol turns 33 today, we look back at the career of one of Bollywood's finest actresses.
In a career spanning 14 years, with a five year break in between, Kajol's string of hits include Baazigar, Yeh Dillagi, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, K3G and Fanaa, among others.
The daughter of actress Tanisha and the late producer Shomu Mukherjee, she can carry off any role with equal élan, whether it is that of a tomboy turned dainty damsel in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, a blind girl in Fanaa or a Chandni Chowk loudmouth in K3G. She has a flair for comedy, drama and romance. She has won 5 Filmfare Awards for Fanaa, K3G, Gupt, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and DDLJ.
Kajol is a far cry from the current lot of conscious and politically correct actresses. Outspoken and lively, the voracious reader is not concerned about her jointed eyebrows or weight; her beauty lies in her imperfections and her 'devil-may-care' attitude.
She married Ajay Devgan in 1999 and had a daughter Nysa in 2003.
She and hubby Ajay have acted in hits like Ishq, Pyaar toh Hona Hi Tha and Ajay's directorial venture, U, Me Aur Hum. She won accolades aplenty for her flawless portrayal of an Alzheimer's patient in the film.
Her most famous pairing has been with SRK in Baazigar, DDLJ, KKHH and Karan Arjun. Her next film is Karan Johar's My Name is Khan with SRK.
Kajol's father expired on 10 April this year, her mother-in-law has just returned from the hospital and hubby Ajay has been advised bed-rest. So she doesn't have any plans for her birthday.
Her manager told us, "She will be celebrating at home only; there are no plans as such. Her mother-in-law is fine now."
Sister Tanisha was also unwilling to talk about Kajol's birthday. "Kads and I have spent so many special moments together on birthdays and otherwise, I want to keep it personal and not share it with everyone. We are a very close, private family and like to keep our private lives private. I hope you understand," said Tanisha.
We wish this modern day legend a very Happy Birthday.
One of the finest actresses of Bollywood Kajol began her career at a tender age of 17. She left her education midway to pursue her career in Bollywood.
Right from the first film BEKHUDI she proved her acting mettle. And this paved her way into big production houses. With back-to-back hits like BAAZIGAR, YEH DILLAGI, KARAN ARJUN, DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAAYENGE, etc... in her kitty there was no looking back for her and with DDLJ's super success she acquired the numero uno status in B-town. And this was not the end, her success story kept on continuing till 2001's most successful film KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM. After that she took a long sabbatical and made a successful comeback with Aamir Khan in 2006 with Kunal Kohli's highly acclaimed FANAA. Then she again took a gap of a year or so to help his hubby Ajay Devgan in his directorial debut U ME AUR HUM which released just few months back with moderate performance. And now the toughest contender of Bollywood is gearing up for her next release opposite King Khan in Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN, the most eagerly awaited movie.
People loved her in all the characters she played whether the negative character in GUPT or the fighting spirit in DUSHMAN, she delivered it with much ease and elan. She is counted as one of those rare actresses who can solely lure the audience to cinema halls. Many aspiring actress today consider her as their true inspiring icon.
The undisputed queen with envious status in Bollywood Kajol is celebrating her 33rd birthday today. Come let's shower loads of best wishes for the simplest and straight forward lady - Kajol.
The most celebrated actresses of Hindi cinema, Kajol and Jaya Bachchan probably share more similarities than any other two actresses must have ever had. Both the ladies are known for having put emergency brakes to their racing careers in order to settle down and start a family. And while many actresses who do so get lost from the limelight, even today Kajol and Jaya command the same kind of media and fan attention that they did at the peak of their careers.
[...]
In fact, if we look closely at their acting careers, it is not difficult to recollect that both the leading ladies preferred a sans-make up or at the most, a minimalist approach when it came to glamour and yet mesmerized everyone with their emotion-packed performances.
And in what can be called the ultimate link to putting this jigsaw together, it was Kajol’s biggest hit DDLJ that ran in theatres for almost 12 years to break a record set by Jaya’s film Sholay of running continuously for five and a half years.
Ana Singh launches her own proprietorship design store tonight at Bandra with her favourite actress Kajol Devgan... “She’s a kickass actress who chose not to be a star,” says the designer of Kajol.
Bollywood designer Ana Singh, who made the Guinness Book for doing 750 films in 20 years, and who got the National Award twice for Umrao Jaan and Taj Mahal, has now made and got her own proprietorship design store at Bandra.
It opens tonight with all the pomp, ceremony and attendance of a Hindi film premiere and will have the lovely Kajol stepping back into the limelight for Ana’s sake.
Ana’s garments in the store include 17 different collections of women’s wear with the fabrics all being from France and Italy, even the Indian sarees have French lame. And there is a small, funky collection of men’s shirts, a pret line made of Bollywood posters that have Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, all very reasonably priced. Ana’s mantra is to be original. And her originality extends beyond her fashion line.
The store has been designed by Ayesha Shroff (“Suzanne Roshan consulted, then got busy with her baby”), Zarine Khan got Ana a lovely Italian chandelier, Dimple Kapadia produced the most amazing candles, there are rugs from Turkey, and Ana herself handpainted accessory chests in devotion to Raja Ravi Varma. She is, you must know, a gold medalist from the JJ School of Art. Bahut dum hai,” she said, “I live to create.”
[...] What about Kajol? Was it difficult with her? Well, Kajol always reminds me of Julia Roberts. Julia hates these action stunt scenes where she has a lot of jumping to do. Kajol is like that. She has to be really coaxed into doing the stunts because she is scared of heights and we had executed the stunts really slowly. In a way they both remind me of my wife, Morgan Brittany because even she hates these scenes. She is more of the love story films type of a person.
Mumbai: Get out and Go play!. That's Kajol's message to all the kids out there and joining her in this campaign by Nickelodeon is Priya Dutt.
All work and no play makes every kid dull, so kiddies channel Nickelodeon is promoting the importance of outdoor games through their unique campaign 'Lets Just Play'. And lending their support to this crusade are celebrity moms Kajol and Priya Dutt.
“I spend a lot of time with my daughter,” says actor, Kajol
“Oh I make sure they are out every evening,” says politician, Priya Dutt
So while Kajol and Priya reveled in some child's play we took them a short trip down memory lane. "I was very naughty my teachers used to say tum school chodke jao (you leave the school”, says Kajol. “It was spectacular," adds Priya Dutt.
There may be only some Bollywood heroines who in spite of not being in the list of the top leading ladies in the Tinsel Town is still adored and commands the same fan following exactly like the time of their heydays as Kajol.
Even though she is not an active actress anymore because of becoming very selective, whenever she comes in a cameo role or in a full fledged role, Kajol is still considered as a force to reckon with.
This is due to her formidable reputation of having a talent which gives her an incredible screen presence.
When we consider all the reasons that have made Kajol an actress who will always be remembered and the special kind of affection that the audience has for her, there is no need to get surprised because of she being made the goodwill ambassador and patron of the UK based Loomba Trust.
The charitable organization concentrates on helping the children of widows in India get access to education.
At Whitehall, Cherie Blair who is the President of Loomba Trust and wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair presented a plaque to Kajol.
The official function to announce the appointment of Kajol as the goodwill ambassador was attended by Mr.Shiv Shankar Mukherjee- Indian High Commissioner to U.K, Borris Johnson-Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone-Former mayor of London, Navnit Dholakia –Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords etc.
Till now around 3500 children of widows from India have benefited from the help they received from Loomba Trust which will be soon extending its activities to Nepal, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Bollywood actress Kajol has been appointed goodwill ambassador of the Britain-based Loomba Trust that works for the welfare and education of children of poor widows in India.
"I am honoured and I hope I would be worthy of this appointment," said Kajol while accepting a plaque from Cherie Blair here Thursday.
Cherie, wife of the former British prime minister Tony Blair, is president of the Loomba Trust.
Kajol attended the annual Diwali dinner organised by the trust. The occasion also marked the UN International Day of Non-Violence, commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The event raised 150,000 pounds for charity to provide scholarships for the children of poor widows in India.
Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, India's High Commissioner to Britain, congratulated the trust for "a worthy job" and promised his support for its noble efforts.
Cherie said that the trust helped to educate at least a hundred children of poor widows in every state of India that totals 3,600. She also extended the trust's projects to Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.
Raj Loomba, founder trustee and chairman of the trust, said that women often lose their husbands due to violence and it was apt on the day to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary who was an apostle of non-violence.
"We should light a candle tonight to celebrate the festival of lights and give those unfortunate women a ray of hope," he said.

Kajol may not be seen much in films these days but the bubbly actress surely has her hands full with endorsements and some charitable work.
Kajol was recently appointed as the goodwill ambassador of the U.K. based Loomba Trust, a charity dedicated to the education of widow's children in and around India.
The function held at Whitehall London (on the occasion of UN International day to celebrate non-violence- Oct 2) saw some bigwigs such as Cherie Blair (wife of former British P.M. Tony Blair), Mayor of London Boris Johnson and India's high commissioner to the U.K. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee in attendance.
Cherie Blair who also happens to be the President of the Loomba Trust presented Kajol with a plaque. The actress said that she would do her best to be worthy of this appointment.
The Loomba Trust, founded by Raj Loomba, has already helped educated 3500 children of widows in India and plans to extend its activities to Sri Lanka, Nepal and South Africa in the coming years.
Post marriage and motherhood, Kajol mightn't be running the rat race but she's still not out of her big star days. The buzz is that she's being flashing her stardom wherever and whenever possible.
Maybe she thinks that her successful comeback with Fanaa the accidental hit 'U, Me Aur Hum', directed by her husband Ajay Devgan and the ambitious upcoming 'Toonpur Ka Superhero' makes her eligible for it!
She has categorically refused to reveal anything about her upcoming biggie Karan Johar's 'My Name Is Khan' or 'Khan' opposite SRK for long.
She has reportedly said, "There is nothing to talk about. I have not even started shooting. Once I start with it, we will talk about it."
Is it because her hubby is still not excited about her working with her one time prolific co-star Shah Rukh Khan?
It could have something to do with the movie being stuck for long too.
Aamir Khan In fact there's a confusion regarding the title too. No one's yet sure whether it will be called 'My Name is Khan' or simply 'Khan'.
Now since the latest is that the movie's title is also clashing with a PNC project (tentatively titled 'Khan') and there are chances of some controversy, Kajol will have more reasons to keep mum!
