Today, 08.08.08, marks the beginning of the Olympics games in Beijing, China. The last time a sports event made a big impact on the country, it was the IPL matches, which had filmwallas both as team owners and spectators.
The IPL matches became so big that they even affected the films releasing in that period. Then came the football world cup fever. But the response seems to be thanda to the games beginning today. Here our Bollytown folks talk about the games, it's memories and why it isn't a big deal in India anymore. Read on⦠F.Y.I. the games start tomorrow and will go on till August 24. ... Ajay Devgan The Olympics begin on the 8th and end on the 28th of this month. I have not been following any games so I can't pinpoint what's my favourite. With cricket and football emerging as more popular sports in India the importance of the Olympics have decreased; because firstly, the talent that needs to get promoted is really not promoted here in India and second and most importantly; while the government is taking enough interest to promote talent in other sports, they aren't taking the Olympics seriously. Our system needs to realise the importance of promoting talents that can be showcased at the Olympics. ...
Ajay Devgan is hooked onto the computer and the web. And the once reticent actor is busy making friends!
Known to be on a community site, the actor is more than happy to chat up with the netizens. Those who reveal their true identity even get their photographs added to his list of friends. When did the anti-social Devgan become a social animal, we wonder! Or is it the internet that has helped him get over his shyness?
The hot and glamorous Celina Jaitley is set to surprise the audiences now. She has shed her sexy image for a non-glam role in her forthcoming flick titled Golmaal Returns. About this experiment of hers, she says, “I go by the script of a film. As an actor I want to do all sorts of films. Moreover, Rohit Shetty is a fabulous director and I love Golmaal Returns. It gives me happiness to make people laugh.” According to Celina, comedy films help her get her target audience. She says, “When kids and families get comfortable with a character, I like it. I thought this character is similar to the one I played in No Entry.” ...

She has always been a trendsetter. From her fashion fundas to her fitness regime, everything that Kareena Kapoor does becomes big news. Off late the story that has been doing the rounds is that she has turned a chef.
Apparently, Kareena, with good friend Amrita Arora in tow, has taken the responsibility of feeding the co-stars low-cal healthy food. On their last schedule of Golmal Returns Kareena was bonding big time with old pal Tusshar Kapoor. “It’s after a gap of 5 years that Kareena and I got the chance to work together again,” says Tusshar.
The actor admits that Kareena was cooking for her friends. “Very few are aware that Kareena is a great cook. She hit the kitchen when we were in Goa and made awesome South Indian food for us. Her specialty is Paneer Tikka. She put me, Ajay Devgan, Amrita Arora and Arshad Warsi on this diet.”
Currently, the diva is abroad. Keeping them company is Amrita Arora who swears by Kareena’s culinary skills. “I was pleasantly surprised when she made South Indian food for us in Goa. She has been cooking on and off even now.” Like most women even Kareena believes that a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Now we know how she impressed Saif?

NEW DELHI: Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgan are all praise for Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra, who bagged India's first individual gold medal at the Olympics.
While Big B thanked Bindra for "making every Indian walk a little taller", Ajay and Aamir have expressed their happiness on the ace shooter's win. ... Ajay has kept his wishes short and sweet as he wrote: "I wish to congratulate Bindra for making Indians proud, Kudos Bindra, indeed you have hit a bull's eye!" ...
Champagne bottles are being uncorked in dozens as Vipul Shah along with his friends and family continue their week long celebrations with Singh Is Kinng taking a record breaking weekend opening all over. Was he really foreseeing the film to take such a swashbuckling start all over even by the widest stretch of imagination?
"Frankly speaking, I wasn't", says Vipul honestly, "You never know which way the audience turns. You may feel that you have made a good film but there are so many factors which could pull it down. For example, on Monday, there were some shows in Mumbai which got impacted due to heavy rains. Now imagine something like this happening over the first weekend itself. Such unforeseen factors could make so much difference to a film's performance."
As one looks forward to an almost certain first week opening record of all times, Vipul Shah is already set to get started on his next project.
"Now it's time to begin shooting for London Dreams", says the soft spoken filmmaker who has tasted blood with his very first production Singh Is Kinng, "After having another person direct a film, I am now raring to get behind the camera myself. In exactly a month from now, shooting would kick start for London Dreams. 14th September is going to be the D-day!"
Incidentally this would be Vipul's first film ever which won't star Akshay Kumar in the lead. While Akshay has played an integral role in the success of each of the four films coming from Vipul Shah (Aankhen, Waqt, Namastey London and Singh Is Kinng), London Dreams would be featuring Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.
"It's going to be my first ever outing with both Salman and Ajay, I am looking forward to the experience", says Vipul who has now delivered four consecutive successful films in a short span of 6 years.
Buzz is that London Dreams is a story of two childhood friends, who struggle to become rock stars in London. The film was earlier supposed to be directed by Rajkumar Santoshi but the project was later shelved. Vipul Shah came into the picture a little later and took over the reins of the project. He is now producing as well as directing the film.
"It has been nice celebrating all along post the success of Singh Is Kinng. However, one can't continue to do that forever. Yes, I am cherishing the success which has come my way but it should be business as usual in quick time. It is going to be quite an engaging season from here on since I am planning to bring the film somewhere in May/June 2009 timeframe. That's less than a year", concludes Vipul.
It is the biggest distribution deal in Bollywood. The Indian Film Company (part of the Network18 group) is close to picking up the worldwide distribution of the Salman Khan-starrer London Dreams for a staggering Rs 120 crore — nearly double the cost of the film.
The deal surpasses Aamir Khan's Ghajini, which was bagged at Rs 90 crore, again by The Indian Film Company. This the first three-digit distribution deal for a Bollywood movie that is still in production stage.
Yet it was only last year that the distribution rights of Shah Rukh Khan's Om Shanti Om was grabbed by Eros International for Rs 75 crore, which made headlines in Bollywood.
Vipul Shah, the maker of the film, confirmed that the deal was close to be signed. "We are in talks with The Indian Film Company and should be able to finalise the deal in a week’s time," confirmed Shah. Sandeep Bhargava, CEO of The Indian Film Company, however, said there was nothing confirmed at this point of time.
London Dreams, which also features Ajay Devgan along with Salman Khan, is currently in the production stage and is slated for release in 2009 with a budget of Rs 60-70 crore.
In what has been a growing but new trend in Bollywood, distribution companies are ready to offer staggering amounts to pick up movies on the production floor.
"There is a lack of talent and with just a handful of films that feature the top actors that draw audiences to the cinema halls, the cost of production is increasing. As a result, the cost of acquisition of these movies is accelerating," said a media analyst. Adds Siddharth Roy Kapur, director, UTV Motion Pictures, "Ultimately, studios realise that having an impressive slate of films is essential for the business going forward."
Film producers, who can hawk their movies at a premium, are not complaining. Apart from recovering the cost of the film they are assured of profits even before the movie hits the screens. However, if the movie is a blockbuster, they miss out on the upside of the movie.
Some distribution companies have hit big time. Eros International hit jackpot with Om Shanti Om raking the moolah at the box-office, so did The Indian Film Company, when it acquired the rights of the Akshay Kumar-starrer Welcome for Rs 45 crore (the film's budget was Rs 30 crore) and Singh is Kinng for Rs 60 crore (the film's budget being Rs 35 crore).
However, not all have struck gold. For instance, UTV bought rights to Race and Kismat Konnection from Tips for around Rs 90 crore, while the budget of the two movies together was in the range of Rs 40-45 crore. While Race fared well at the box office, UTV did not recover its money. Kismat Konnection too had a lukewarm response.

With Independence Day around the corner, we revisit films inspired by our national leaders ... Film made: Shaheed (1965) Probably the most acclaimed and commercially-successful of all patriotic films made in India, Manoj Kumar’s Shaheed marked his terrific debut as writer. His portrayal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh and those of his screen mom Kamini Kaushal, Pran, Prem Chopra and others are still etched in public memory, along with the timeless songs and the authentic research and locations including the actual jail in which the martyrs were incarcerated. Shaheed also won the President’s Silver Medal. In 2002, there was a resurgence of interest in Bhagat Singh and five movies were made, with three released and all unsuccessful. Ajay Devgan was the martyr in Rajkumar Santoshi’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh and Bobby Deol essayed the role in Sunny Deol’s 23 March 1931 - Shaheed. Sonu Sood played the role in Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh. ...
The intense actor Ajay Devgan played Bhagat Singh in Raj Kumar Santoshi's The Legend Of Bhagat Singh . The actor very well portrayed the revolutionary spirit of the young man who dedicates his life for the country

Just last week we had told you about the Diwali week line-up, now consisting of BILLOO BARBER, HEROES and ROADSIDE ROMEO. We had also hinted that the Rohit Shetty directed GOLMAAL RETURNS, which was originally scheduled to release during the same week but was postponed, planning to return back to its original date. Well, that is how it has actually turned out to be!
The Ajay Devgan-Kareena Kapoor starrer GOLMAAL RETURNS, a sequel to GOLMAAL, will once again hit the screens on 24th October 2008, as was the earlier schedule.
For those who are not aware as to why a host of releases, featuring the likes of Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgan, Salman Khan, Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor etc are centering on the above mentioned date, it is because of the postponement of the Akshay-Deepika starrer CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and the Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif venture YUVRAAJ, which were schedule to release during the Diwali week.
Enough of hearsay, here's the first official confirmation… SINGH IS KINNG is past. Vipul Shah has moved on. He's all set to embark on his new venture, LONDON DREAMS. The film, as we all know by now, brings the HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM combination of Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan after a hiatus.
One of the hottest projects without doubt, LONDON DREAMS has caught the fancy of a number of corporate entities, but the one to bag the rights is Indian Films, the same firm that acquired SINGH IS KINNG for an astronomical amount. LONDON DREAMS too comes with a heavy price tag: Rs. 120 crores.
"Yes, that's the figure," Vipul Shah makes his first official statement, "We've [Indian Films and Vipul] shook hands, only the paper work has to be completed." Earlier, Vipul's SINGH IS KINNG set the record of being the most expensive film. Now his next film has set the bar higher!
"I think AAG did more than a wonderful job when it comes to entertainment" - Ramu Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, August 18, 2008

Ramu explains his take on the media in the write-up below:
... I truly think I deserve great credit for creating a project such as Aag to enable the media to dish out such fantastic entertainment to all concerned in ripping it apart. If entertainment is the sole purpose of a film, I think Aag has done more than a wonderful job, definitely much more than what it could have done in the theatres even if it turned out to be a damn good film. ...
