New Delhi: After playing the protagonist in two highly successful comic capers - “Golmaal” and its recently released sequel “Golmaal Returns”, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan says the title has almost become a brand in itself.
"It feels great to see the kind of business 'Golmaal Returns' has done in its first week. It has broken records and has become one of the biggest hits of the year. I am very positive about the third film in the series as 'Golmaal' has almost become a brand now," Ajay told IANS.
The actor was in the capital with wife Kajol to flag off a special senior citizen marathon for Harmony magazine Sunday.
According to Ajay, brand 'Golmaal' is of consequence to him as long as the usual team including himself, director Rohit Shetty, actors Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor and other crew members stick together.
“'Golmaal' as a brand is a team effort and the brand goes together with all people who are associated with it. We will not be able to be create the same mood without each other,” he said.
Released Oct 29, "Golmaal Returns" stars Ajay and Kareena Kapoor as a couple. Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora, Anjana Sukhani and Paresh Rawal are other members of the film's cast.
Shetty has even announced "Golmaal 3" after "Golmaal Returns" managed to rake in Rs.4.5 million in the domestic market and Rs.1 million internationally in the first week of its release.
Ajay, who last featured in his directorial debut “U, Me Aur Hum”, which was critically acclaimed, says although he was expecting a good response, the reactions to the film have been “exceptional”.
“People have been talking about the film and have been telling me it was really good. That is what our idea was - to gel together and make people laugh. Even my daughter Nysa loved the film and wants to go and watch it again,” he said.
Prior to “Golmaal Returns”, Ajay featured in Shetty's all previous directorial ventures including “Zameen”, “Golmaal” and “Sunday”. He says it is because they have a lot of faith in each other.
“I have known Rohit for almost 19 years now. I have a lot of faith in him and we share a great camaraderie. We are good friends and share a great rapport. I try not to interfere in his work or for that matter with any of my directors. We definitely discuss everything, but I leave the final call to the director,” Ajay said.
Right now Ajay is busy shooting for his upcoming films - Vipul Shah's “London Dreams”, a three-dimensional animated film “Toonpur Ka Superhero” and Prakash Jha's “Rajniti”, apart from one action film. The actor is happy doing a variety of projects.
“I am doing all kinds of roles. There's action, comedy and serious drama. But comedy seems to be working better these days as people enjoy humour. They have become bored of serious stuff and they don't want to take too much of stress when they go out to watch a film.
“The audiences enjoy it more when they spend two stress-free hours and come out laughing with their whole family,” he said.
This year he was also seen in "Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag", "Halla Bol", "Sunday" and "U, Me Aur Hum". While "Halla Bol" and his directorial debut "U, Me Aur Hum" was critically acclaimed, "Sunday" did good business at the box office.
This Sunday, Ajay Devgan and wife Kajol were in Delhi, but instead of sleeping in on the chhutti ka din, they were up bright and early.
There was a chill in the early morning air too, now that the winter in Delhi is close, but that didn’t bother them or others like Kareena and Saif, composer AR Rahman and Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, boxer Vijender Singh and corporate biggie Rajan Mittal, as they came to support the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.
Ajay and Kajol were there to flag off the senior citizens’ run – part of the social initiative by Tina Ambani called Harmony. Ajay said it was something he would never have turned down for anything. “It’s a great cause and it was a great feeling. The fact that it involved those from society who’ve given us so much and are at the stage of life where they need our support, makes it all the more important. Kajol feels the same way and that is why we both were here in Delhi for it,” he says. Ask him if he would want his daughter Nysaa to be involved with something like this when she grows up and he says, “Even though she’s too small to understand what Kajol and I have done, but we make sure that the best of culture and values are given to her. It is very important to learn all this and we’ll leave no stone unturned to teach her.” Ajay said that sports plays a very important role in an individual’s life. “Sports of all kinds create great harmony and unite people. I mean, look at this marathon – everyone from different walks of life is here. And yes, it is mentally and physically very healthy. I feel bad for kids who don’t get a chance to enjoy the world of outdoor games because they are inundated with too much technology in their homes. Technology is good, but nothing can beat outdoor games. I’m going to make sure my daughter is exposed to them.”
But that’s not all that has the otherwise grim-looking actor smiling these days. There’s also the “surprising” success of Golmaal Returns. “It’s not that we didn’t have faith in it, it’s just that I guess I didn’t realise how much people would like it. But they did, and our job was done. It is important not just for an actor to be paid for what he is doing, but also to be appreciated for his talent. And sometimes, that means more than anything else.” There’s more on his plate currently. “I’ve just wrapped up London Dreams, then there’s Toonpur Ka Superhero, in which Kajol and I feature as real people in toon land, there’s Rajniti that I have to start shooting for. I also want to do an action movie now, which I have been planning to do. When it’s finalised, I will let you know,” he says.
For a guy who hasn’t seen any lull in his work in Bollywood, and neither in the controversies he’s in, he doesn’t bother to give his version very often, does he? “What’s the point? I used to clarify rumours earlier, but I’ve realised that justifying things doesn’t work. I will still be written about in the way people want to write about me and they will only write two lines of what I have to say. So I don’t waste my energy on it,” he says. Ajay also says that he did not have a rough start to his career. In fact, he never wanted to be an actor. “I didn’t even want to get into movies in the first place. But then I did, and I made a promise to myself that if people liked me in this movie, well and good. Because I am not the kind who’d walk into moviemakers’ office with my profile and boast about my father and ask for a role. Today, when I look back, I know I have come a long way from being written about as an actor who could only do action roles to an actor who can be versatile when it comes to the art of acting. It is a very satisfying feeling,” he concludes.
Golmaal Returns has added one more feather in the cap of Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd. after blockbusters like Bhagambhag, Golmaal and Jab We Met. "Golmaal Returns" fired up the Indian new year weekend with outstanding grosses from 1,050 locations worldwide. The multi starrer registered approx. $10 million at the box office within five days of its theatrical release on Wednesday 29th October, 2008, emerging as the numero uno release of the Diwali season!!! It's been the biggest 5 day opening weekend ever! The film has smashed many records in Mumbai, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan. In the Mumbai circuit, the B+C centres have never seen collections like Golmaal Returns before. The circuit has seen a new record of 17.75 crore for seven days. The film is well on its way to emerge as the biggest hit of 2008!!! In the international markets, Golmaal Returns has done good business with 1.50 crore in United Kingdom, 1 crore in north America and 2 crore in the Middle East. In Pakistan, the long weekend produced an outstanding result of approx. 8.6 million Pakistani Rupees, breaking the record of the industry's top openers. The total first weekend overseas business being around 5.50 crore. In the UK and Ireland, just the opening catapulted the title to the coveted UK Top 10 sharing ranks with Hollywood biggies as "Quantum of Solace", "High Street Musical 3", "Mamma Mia", "Ghost Town" and "Saw V". What we can say, Golmaal has surely Returned with a bang!
Golmaal Returns director Rohit Shetty isn't sure who owns the copyrights of the story
Rohit Shetty's Golmaal Returns is in the middle of a controversy with Shakuntala Bhatia claiming that the film is based on her late husband director-producer Rajendra Bhatia's film, Aaj Ki Tazaa Khabar (1973).
She has filed a complaint with the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association claiming a compensation of Rs 5 crore from the producers, Shree Ashtavinayak Cine-vision. Rohit says, "The fact is we don't know who to pay.
Tusshar's teacher Vikas Kadam (for the deaf and dumb skills) is a stage guy who told us that even Aaj Ki Tazaa Khabar had been adapted from a regional play which in turn, was also inspired from a French film. We didn't know whom the rights existed with. For the first Golmaal we had bought the rights of the Gujarati play Aflatoon, so why shouldn't we with GR?"
Rohit's already planning Golmaal 3. He laughs, "Yes, but this time it's an original idea. I want to give myself a break before starting Golmaal 3." And do we get to see Tusshar Kapoor finally getting his voice back as we saw at the climax of GR? "No way! Tusshar will never get his voice back. He's the USP of the film and kids love him.
I think Tusshar and Shreyas rocked in Golmaal Returns. When people try to change a successful formula, it doesn't work any more. The climax was an impromptu one which we shot at our last schedule in Bangkok.
Tusshar getting his voice back wasn't part of the script!"
Biwi ke khaatir
Meanwhile the director is on a high and has decided to fulfill wife Maya's every whim. He's just come back from a trip to Ambby Valley with his family (Maya and son Ishaan) and now he's taking her to Dubai in January.
Rohit says, "I am very happy with the success of Golmaal Returns and want to indulge my wife's every whim. I took her and my kid to Amby Valley for a short holiday but she wants to go to Dubai for the Shopping Festival so I am gifting her that holiday."
Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, November 12, 2008
Basking in the success of his multi-starrer comic caper Golmaal Returns that smashed box-office records despite negative reviews, director Rohit Shetty says critics were not objective in their approach towards the film.
"A couple of critics were very political and personal in their reviews. A few of them were right, but some really wanted to bring the film down but could not. The film's success is a historic proof and I want to tell other directors not to be afraid of critics in future," Shetty told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
"Though I would not like to name him, one of the critics, who was a director earlier, in fact, has a problem with my editor Steven Bernard. He had some technical issues with Bernard while he was editing his film. In order to hamper Bernard's image, he tried to ruin my film too through his review."
Golmaal Returns, a sequel to the 2006 hit comedy Golmaal, is about a couple whose married life takes a comical turn when the husband gets stuck for a night on a yacht with a beautiful woman.
The multi-starrer raked in around Rs.2.2 million in the domestic market on its first day of release, breaking the record of blockbuster hits Om Shanti Om and Singh Is Kinng.
The film also collected 40,000 pounds in Britain on the first day itself and has done a total business of around Rs.1 billion till date.
It features a string of stars including Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora and Anjana Sukhani.
Shetty is on cloud nine.
"I'm very happy. This happens once in a lifetime that you break so many records. It is a masala film for the masses and we knew from the beginning that we were going to be trashed by critics. We didn't even have a press preview for the film. But we have broken records only when the masses have appreciated the film," said Shetty.
However, making the rib-tickling project was a risky business for the director after his last release "Sunday" received a mixed response.
"'Sunday' was an eye opener for me. The audiences, I guess, were not prepared to like a comic thriller. Everyone who met me said it's not like Golmaal. So I realised I got to make what they like - a masala film," Shetty said.
Asked about the copyright controversy that Golmaal Returns is courting against late Rajendra Bhatia's 1973 movie Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, Shetty said: "I had sent a few people from my team to take the rights of the play on which the movie is based. But we could not succeed as nobody from the team now exists. Like for Golmaal..., we took the copyrights of the play Aflatoon from the early 90s.
"However, the issue is only from the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association's (IMPPA) side and my producers will take care of it. We didn't know that apart from taking the rights of the play, we'd have to take the rights for a loosely inspired movie too," quipped Shetty.
The director brushed aside reports about actress Anjana Sukhani's alleged comment that she was sidelined in the publicity and marketing campaign of the film.
"Anjana called me herself and clarified that she hasn't said any such thing. So when my actress is saying she hasn't done it, how can I even react to that," he said.
Shetty has also announced the third instalment in the Golmaal series.
"Golmaal 3 was always in mind like a germ. We'll have a completely new story in the third movie. And the script will be written keeping the characters in mind as Golmaal is a character-driven film. I'd also like to bring in Paresh ji (Rawal) in the third movie. But I'll make another film before it," he said.
If there are any similarities between Rohit Shetty's Golmaal Returns and the 1973 hit comedy Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, then Shetty isn't aware of them. Nor has he received any notification, legal or otherwise, from the widow of the earlier film's producer who has made copyright-infringement claims.
"I haven't seen Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar yet. I've just come back from a holiday with my wife and son. I plan to see the film as soon as possible. I want to see what the similarities are."
Needless to say, Rohit was clueless about the likeness between the two films. "If I knew anything about the similarity I'd have happily paid up. The copyright compensation would've amounted to a few lakhs which for a film with a budget of multi-crores is nothing. And don't you think we'd have rather avoided trouble than get into a confrontational situation with anyone over the story? We earlier bought the rights of a Gujarati stage play to make the first part of Golmaal. And I went through all the legitimate channels to remake Sunday from a Telugu film."
As for Golmaal Returns, Rohit says it's not just his film that has echoes from the past. "Even Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar, I'm told is inspired by a couple of plays including a French play. It's my friend Paritosh Painter who pointed this out to me."
Now, Rohit Shetty is getting ready for the third part of Golmaal. He'd more or less like to make it with the same cast again. "I don't think I'll be allowed to make anything else right now. But first I need to see Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar."

GOLMAAL RETURNS is Ajay Devgan's biggest grosser till date yet the calm, composed and cool super actor is his usual self. Though he is very happy with the overwhelming response to the film, he is very much focused on his next directorial venture after U ME AUR HUM.
Devgan clarifies that the film should have gone on the floors but it is taking longer than expected. Reason? Well, Ajay wants his film to be technically perfect and on par with international standards, and these things take time. Ajay confirms that his wife, Kajol will once again star in the film and that there wont be too many characters in the film (ala RNBDJ; SRK too says that there are not many characters in the film!).
Devgan is hopeful that he wont make the same mistake that he made with (his debut directorial film) U ME AUR HUM, that of trying to play it safe in the first half and says that he wont hold back on his instincts.
Mumbai, Nov 13: Ajay Devgan and Kajol, the sensible couple of Bollywood believe in doing serious work. They do not display their affection publicly, like Saif and Kareena or kiss controversies but want their creative work to speak. Recently, Ajay Devgan announced a film that would have wife Kajol in the lead role – a cause of jubilation for their fans. Ajay Devgan is riding waves of success for his recent ‘Golmaal Returns’, and the zeal is catching on.
His next directorial venture after ‘U Me Aur Hum’, is his one of the most ambitious projects till date. The actor wants his film (unnamed) to be technically correct and he is leaving no stones unturned to achieve perfection.
Ajay is ensuring that there are not many characters in the film and the film doesn’t end up appearing slow and dull like his former attempt. Loads of best wishes for the lovely couple!
He's all actor-y now, but when he entered Bollywood he was the son of its premier stunt-director. And Veeru Devgan musta been proud of the way Ajay gruntingly tossed villains aside.
'Golmaal Returns' by its good run at the box office has given enough encouragement to the director, a great relief for the all the lead actors as all of them needed a big commercially successfully movie as a lubricant for smooth sail ahead and has enabled the producer to laugh all the way to the bank.
The movie like a good omen directing better things to follow also has led to the birth of a healthy friendship between the actors Celina Jaitley, Tusshar Kapoor and Shreyas Talpade.
The bonding between the three seems to have become very strong.
This was very much evident during the promotions of the film during which the actors could be seen having a gala time being extremely comfortable with each other.
A lot of speculations about a budding love affair also were spread around after Tusshar and Celina were spotted hanging out together a couple of times.
At the Lakme Fashion Week, Shreyas made sure that he was present along with his wife to encourage Celina as she came over as a show stopper for a leading designer.
In Bollywood, it does not take much time for making new relationships and for old friendships to be fractured beyond repair.
Let's hope these new companionships stand the test of time.

Rohit Shetty has made a startling revelation. Even though GOLMAAL RETURNS has been a huge money spinner, the young film maker reveals that when he was set out to make the first of the series, GOLMAAL, 3 years back, he was very worried. He had just made ZAMEEN and when the world advised him to stick to the action genre (since he had tasted success with his very first film), he turned to slapstick. His changing gears was not taken too kindly and worse, many in the industry laughed at his efforts of making a comedy about four guys.
"I was indeed quite scared", admits Rohit, "People were not prepared about this comedy film called GOLMAAL and used to ask 'Who is this director'? When they realized that Rohit is the same guy who was behind ZAMEEN, they used to make fun. They were not so discreet in declaring that this guy, who is mainly an action film director, would ever be able to make a full on laughaton like GOLMAAL."
He smiles when he thinks about the past.
"GOLMAAL series was never meant to be a dialogue oriented comedy, as can be seen in GOLMAAL RETURNS too. It is slapstick with factors like snake fights and people flying all over. The entire spoof theme too is experimental. However, though I was worried about GOLMAAL or for that matter even SUNDAY, I wasn't as much about GOLMAAL RETURNS. I knew it would take a flying start but the mega opening it has taken has pleasantly surprised all of us associated with the movie", concludes Rohit.

Golmaal returns… again, and this time, Sharman Joshi doesn’t want to miss the bus
That Shaman Joshi himself opted out of Golmaal Returns, the sequel to Golmaal is a known fact. So what’s amusing us is that Sharman now wants to be part of the Golmaal team again. It’s not surprising us though, knowing the kind of success Golmaal Returns has garnered. Sharman has realised the huge mistake he made when he refused Golmaal Returns and is quite eager to join back now.
Says a rueful Sharman, “I sure regret it. And not just because the sequel is a hit. I actually hated myself for breaking away from the Golmaal team. But it couldn’t be helped… my dates were committed elsewhere.”
Sharman has no intention of missing the third part of the series. “There’s no way I’m missing a chance to be in the next Golmaal film. All they (filmmakers) have to do is ask. I will toss aside everything to be in it” he says resolutely.
But didn’t we like Shreyas Talpade, who stepped into Sharman’s shoes for Golmaal Returns better? Even director Rohit Shetty seems to think so. Praising Shreyas, Rohit says, “He stepped in wonderfully. He is amazing in the sequel.” And fortunately for Sharman, Rohit adds, “We missed Sharman in the sequel.
I’m fully aware that Sharman wants to be back. In fact, there are references to him in the film. Ajay Devgan’s character has Sharman’s picture on a table in his office. Besides, Sharman opted out solely due to date problems, and I can’t hold that against him. But yes, I also can’t ask Shreyas to hand back the role to Sharman.”
Is that a polite way to shoo off Sharman? Not quite. Rohit has already found a way out. Reveals Rohit, “I am going to write an extra character for the third part of Golmaal. So instead of four, there will now be five boys. That way, I lose neither of the actors. Shreyas and Sharman are both very talented actors and having them together will just make Golmaal more happening.”

übersetzt von soulsurfer: Die Times of India vergibt ihren Oskar "of Food Awards" in "the Times Food and Nightlife Awards 2008-09" im ITC Grand Central in Parel.
Ajay Devgan indulged in a whole lot of pranks with some help from co-stars Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi on the sets of Golmaal Returns and now he’s shifted his attention to a younger age group!
We are talking about his next film Toonpur Ka Superhero, which will appeal to the kiddie audience. Directed by Kireet Khurana, the film is touted to be India’s first live-action and 3D animation feature film with Hollywood’s leading action director Jack Gill choreographing the action sequences. Ajay is very fond of kids and is happy to be a part of the project. “They are quite a handful, but a lot of fun to be around,” he says.
If producer Vikas Kapoor and director Samir Karnik (the Heroes pair) can be expected to fulfill their next dream, the most expensive film ever made in Indian cinema, history is on the cards.
Tentatively, it is being called Lanka; and, Kapoor and Karnik have five Bollywood hunks in mind for the film and one hot woman. The film is being described as a thriller, and its production values are already around Rs 90 crore, that’s not counting the fat pay packets of the star cast. Much like Mission Impossible, Lanka will be shot underwater extensively, and the plot has the six actors trying to recover 60,000 tons of gold from the seabed 6,000 feet below.
Not exciting enough? Then hear this! The cast includes hunk Salman Khan, Greek God Hrithik Roshan, the hot and sexy Abhishek Bachchan, the intense Ajay Devgan and the daring Bobby Deol and the sultry Priyanka Chopra. Kapoor, unwilling to divulge much, admitted, “We are finalising the script and nobody’s officially been signed so far. But, this being an adventurous project, we will require actors of that calibre to fit the roles. We have bounced the script with a few of them and all are very excited.”
He is unfazed by the headache of handling so many big stars. “It’s not rocket science,” said Kapoor, “if you have a good script and you respect the stars’ space, they cooperate. Because everyone works towards making the film a success.” Action experts and technical wizards from Hollywood will be flown down when the film is being shot in India. Otherwise, action sequences are also planned in Las Vegas, parts of Japan, Paris, with the underwater sequences being kept for Australia.
