During the shooting of ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI, there weren't those usual hassles associated with the making of a film that resulted in some real hard work for the production people. In fact there were quite a few logistics hassles that director Milan Luthria had to face, primarily due to the fact that the film has a period setting to it.
"We had to extensively work on the look of the film and actually spent close to eight months in pre production", states Milan who has earlier made two grand films in the form of KACHCHE DHAAGE and DEEWAR - LET'S BRING OUR HEROES HOME, "In fact that was the biggest challenge and it did take time to put it all together."
CHECK OUT: Emraan Hashmi - From smack smack to six pack
The film which is set in the Mumbai underworld of the 70s, ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAI stars Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut and Prachi Desai in the lead. Due to quite a few actors involved as well as many other supporting actors, there was added focus on getting the costumes, hairstyles and vehicles right. "We had to do a lot of research on getting everything perfect, including props and other artifacts", says Milan, "It is one thing to understand what is needed for a film and another to actually be able to procure it."
He goes on to narrate a few interesting incidents when he couldn't procure the right vehicles and bungalows.
"There were times when some people were not quite ready to give their cars and bungalows for shoot", smiles Milan, "In a place like Paris it is easier because along with modern day architecture, the city also has its heritage value intact. However in Mumbai, you have to struggle to gain hold of the right bungalows, hotels or streets that come from a particular time zone."

Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge
Ajay Devgan's comic timing in the recently released All The Best was outstanding. His next film Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge finds him playing a married couple with the hugely talented Konkona Sen Sharma and how an uninvited guest in Paresh Rawal exasperates them with his relentless over-stay in their house. Produced by Kumar Mangat and Amita Pathak, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge has been written-directed by Ashwani Dhir who has a flair for devising fine comic moments. People are always waiting for a good clean comedy flick. It seems the audience may just over stay in this funny family drama.
Ajay Devgn and actress-wife Kajol will go on a month long Christmas/New Year vacation to their farm near Karjat.
The actor who has a sprawling house in Karjat is currently getting the swimming pool re-modelled. Yes, it will be the size that will be good enough for Olympic gold medallists. Ajay, Kajol and Nysa will spend Christmas there... and immediately after the New Year, Ajay will combine business with pleasure. He will shoot for Ekta Kapoor’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbai at the nearby studio, so that his vacation time with the family is also not eaten into. This is what you call style.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra changes his mind about screening the Raajneeti promo during the interval of 3 Idiots, Prakash Jha is not surprised by the volte face
One wonders why Vidhu Vinod Chopra, whose 3 Idiots is definitely the most awaited film of 2009, is nervous and insecure just three days before the release. Why else would he ask UTV (distributors of Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti) to withdraw the Raajneeti trailer, which was scheduled to be shown during the interval of 3 Idiots? Or is this the brainchild of the marketing head of the film, Aamir Khan, who seldom likes to share the limelight with anybody else?
According to a source, Vidhu called up UTV and told them that he didn’t want the Raajneeti trailer screened during 3 Idiots. “This decision came in the wake of a private screening of 3 Idiots held recently. Everybody who saw the film spoke very highly about the trailer of Raajneeti and felt that it would be a very strong film. This set Vidhu’s mind ticking and he decided that he would rather do away with the trailer than have people distracted from 3 Idiots.”
Speaking from New York, Jha confirmed that UTV had informed him about Vidhu’s decision. He said, “Vidhu had seen the trailer of Raajneeti and told me that it would be a pleasure to screen it. But now he has developed cold feet at the last minute. UTV told me that Vidhu found that at a recent screening of 3 Idiots, people who saw the film were talking only about the trailer of Raajneeti. Vidhu hasn’t spoken to me but I learnt that he found the trailer of Raajneeti too powerful.”
But Jha also said that he knew this was coming. He added, “I know Vidhu since our FTII days. I had told UTV that I can’t trust Vidhu till the last moment. Woh kabhi decision leta hai, kabhi nahin leta hai, ek minute khush ho jata hai, doosre minute bahut pareshan ho jata hai. It’s not unusual. That is Vidhu’s nature. Ab kya karein?”
However, the trailer of Raajneeti has already been attached to the overseas prints, which have left Indian shores. How will he remove the trailer from those prints now? Jha replied, “That I don’t know. But I have heard that he will remove it from the prints to be released in India,” and quickly added, “I sympathise with Vidhu.”
We sent a text message to Vidhu asking why he reversed his decision to carry the trailer of Raajneeti, but the moody filmmaker did not reply.
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, December 22, 2009 - 16:03 IST
Long before the days of massive promotional campaigns and media appearances for film publicity, was the humble film trailer. Audiences retained their seats during the interval, awaiting the first look of the next blockbuster. And thus, a to-be-released film piggybacked on the one showing. All well and good.
Prakash Jha's much awaited multi-starrer Rajneeti's trailer was all set to be unveiled with 3 Idiots, which was one of the highlights of this week. However, reports now suggest that, in an apparent flip flop, the producers of 3 Idiots have decided against carrying the Rajneeti theatrical.
A spokesperson from Rajneeti's producers confirmed to Bollywood Hungama that the film promo will not be a part of the 3 Idiots prints which are being dispatched across the country. "Yes, it was communicated to us yesterday that the promo of Rajneeti will not be carried along with the Indian prints of 3 Idiots as planned before. But the overseas prints might have it." The reason being that the overseas prints have already been dispatched.
When contacted, producers of 3 Idiots were unavailable for comment.
It was way back in 2008 when the seeds of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai were sown first. With Ekta Kapoor as the producer, the film was announced with director Milan Luthria at the driving seat. Though Suniel Shetty was supposed to co-produce the film with Ekta Kapoor first with murmurs of Sanjay Dutt being roped in for the role of the central protagonist, that didn't quite happen. Ultimately Ajay Devgn was finalised for the role of a dreaded Mumbai based don (rumoured to be based on Haji Mastan) from the 70s with Emraan Hashmi, Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai were roped in as the other principal protagonists.
With such developments taking place in quick succession and the film's shooting also beginning in July 2009, it was expected that Once Upon A Time In Mumbai would be wrapped up in a jiffy and released before the end of year. However, that was not the case to be as the film was taking its own sweet time to reach the finishing mark. With any delay comes speculation, more so since Ekta Kapoor was sitting on the hat trick of box office disasters (EMI, C Kkompany, Mission Istanbul - all released in 2008). Naturally, obituaries were already being written for this Milan Luthria directed film.
It was all around the industry circles that the film was jinxed and would not quite reach the finishing mark. Even though the makers had announced an increase in budget of the film with reports of Ekta being happy with the rushes of what had been shot so far, observers passed this off as a last minute face saving tactic. It was also rumoured that Emraan Hashmi, who has traditionally never been happy in multi star-cast affairs (Good Boy Bad Boy, Chocolate) had started loosing interest in the film while Ajay Devgn, being the senior-most of the lot, was demanding a change in script.
It wasn't a happy situation for Milan either since he was desperate to get back into the groove after having waited for two years since the release of Hat Trick (2007). His Bihaad with Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan hadn't quite got on the floors and the filmmaker's frustration was palpable. With recession and a general slowdown in the making of the films turning out to be a final nail in the coffin, it pretty much seemed like a declaration that Once Upon A Time In Mumbai was stalled.
Joginder Tuteja gets into a conversation with Milan who not just confirms that the film is very much on but also hits back at all the accusations around schedules going haywire.
Is Once Upon A Time In Mumbai stalled? I don't know why there have been so much of speculations around the completion of Once Upon A Time In Mumbai (OUATIM) . We are almost 60% through with the film. In fact as we talk, I am already finalising logistics for another schedule which begins soon. It would go on till early January.
If things are pretty much on track, why have there been so many speculations? I guess speculations like these happen because today, most films are made at stretch. The start to finish trend has become so very common that any film that takes longer than 40-50 days to complete is questioned. My own Deewar - Let's Bring Our Heroes Home and Kachche Dhaage were pretty spread out.
Still, wasn't OUATIM planned for an earlier release? There haven't been any major changes in the plan and the film was always meant to be completed over a period of 6 months. Yes, we could have possibly finished shooting a little earlier but then Ajay was shooting abroad for some time. Post that he had the release of All The Best lined up. Since he was also the producer, he was a little aggressive in promotion. We were fine with this slight wait but no, there wasn't any slowdown internally.
One also hears that there were also quite a few logistics hassles due to the period setting of the film. More than hassles, I would say these were expected challenges. Unlike the scenario where a film crew either assembles on studio sets at Mumbai or jets away for a start to finish overseas shoot, OUATIM had its own challenges to meet. Due to its period setting, my team had to make sure that at the least, the film looked authentic. This is not one of those films where you can go to London, shoot for two months and come back.
So when do we see the film eventually releasing? We started shooting in the month of July and we should be wrapping up the film in January. In fact most of Emraan's portions are already shot. Things are shaping up well for the film and even though some industry friends out there are a little worried about the film, we aren't. Once Upon A Time In Mumbai was always planned for a summer release and we are pretty much on target for that.
Ajay Devgan and Kajol were spotted at Ajmer Sharif Dargah which is visited usually by Ajay every month. This month Kajol also accompanied her husband. It seems she needed prayers before the coming on of My Name is Khan. Director Rohit Shetty also accompanied them.
Amita Pathak, who made her debut with Hal-e-Dil will now be seen in a new role. No, we aren’t talking about another acting assignment, but the youngster has turned producer.
Not just that, she has just completed her first star-studded film Atithi Tum Kab Jaooge? directed by Ashwini Dhir and starring Ajay Devgn, Konkona SenSharma, Paresh Rawal and others, in a 40-day shooting schedule. That’s no small achievement for a debutant producer. Amita says, “We had meticulously planned the film with clock-work precision, but all this would not have been possible without support from Warner Bros, my actors and technicians, who went out of their way to finish the film on time.” The film is a comedy about a guest who arrives at Ajay’s and Konkana’s house and doesn’t want to leave.
On the acting front, Amita is working in Priyadarshan’s next film which is almost complete. She finds the producer’s job very interesting. She proudly admits that at times she did take guidance from her father, Kumar Mangat, who is an experienced producer to solve her problems. Amita’s brother Abhishek is a budding director. He has already directed a film titled Boond, which was screened at Goa Film Festival and has also been a part of ten other international film festivals. Amita now plans to produce more films when she comes across an interesting script. She feels that more women should handle the job of a producer. Well, we are sure Amita’s definitely making her dad proud.
Ajay travels incognito to Ajmer Shariff dargah to avoid the crowds By: Upala KBR Date: 2009-12-28 Place: Mumbai
Stars don all kinds of make-ups and get-ups to avoid crowds at public places. While Mallika Sherawat says she often wears a burqa to travel in public trains to reach faster, Ajay Devgn recently sported a moustache and wore a face-covering cap to visit the Ajmer Shariff dargah in Rajasthan last week.
Says a source close to Ajay, "About ten days ago, Ajay, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge? cinematographer Aseem Bajaj and the film's producer Amita Pathak were to travel to the dargah at Ajmer Shariff. Due to personal reasons, Ajay couldn't go.
A visit was fixed up for last Wednesday but the dargah authorities requested Ajay not to come as it was among the first ten days of Muharram (considered very auspicious). Hence, the dargah would be very crowded."
This time, though, Ajay was adamant that he had to go. Says the source, "He donned a scarf and a cap and didn't shave for a couple of days and sported a stubble and moustache. At the dargah, his disguise was so complete that when he got down from his car, nobody recognised him.
A posse of 12 security guys and a maulvi from the dargah escorted him inside. It was an auspicious day. Ajay paid obesience and chaddar charana at 8 pm and left soon. In all this time, no one recognised him."
Kumar Mangat says, "Yes it's true that Ajay was in disguise to avoid the huge crowd at the dargah. Even the maulvi who went with him is a very big man there and coordinates all the visits from people in the film industry. Agar humko chadar charana hai toh we inform him from beforehand and pay him through money order."

Kareena Kapoor will star in Golmaal 3. Apparently, director Rohit Shetty was asked to make sure that Kareena is the solo heroine in the film, as she is not keen on multiple-heroine projects. Rohit says, “Kareena will be the only female lead along with the five boys; Ajay Devgan, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi and Shreyas Talpade. However, she will not be the romantic interest of any of the heroes.
In fact Kareena will be the one of the heroes - the sixth hero! I have also made sure Golmaal 3 is far more family-oriented. The boys’ jokes in Golmaal Returns won’t return.” The film’s shooting begins in April 2010. –SKJ
