MILWAUKEE -- For the second straight game, the Milwaukee Brewers will be without All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy. Theyll have to get used to his absence. After months of speculation, Milwaukee reportedly reached agreement on a deal that would send Lucroy, 30, to the Cleveland Indians for a package of prospects including highly touted catcher Francisco Mejia.Milwaukee held Lucroy out of their 5-3 victory Saturday as talks progressed, according to manager Craig Counsell, and news of the agreement broke approximately an hour after the game.Lucroy or not, the Brewers look to finish their season-long 10-game homestead on a high note. Theyve won six of the first nine games and two consecutive series, and a victory Sunday would mark their third series sweep of the season.I dont think its anything different than how weve played all year, Counsell said. Every day is a new day. With all the stuff swirling around, weve talked about distractions and where to put them. Guys have gotten opportunities and made the most of them.Matt Garza (1-4, 5.74 ERA) takes the mound for Milwaukee, making his ninth start of the season and his second of the year against the Pirates, who scored five runs on eight hits over five innings against him on July 21.Garza took no decision his last time out against Arizona but left the game with a 4-3 lead after going six innings and allowing five hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts but hes 0-4 with a 7.52 ERA over his last five outings.Ive been looking for my stuff throughout this season, Garza said. The last start, I felt I was on the verge of finding it. Im real happy I found it. A lot of the hits were off-speed hits and I learned after that and went back to what Im accustomed to doing, going right after guys.Pittsburgh counters with lefty Francisco Liriano (6-10, 5.38), who is two strikeouts shy of 1,500 for his career.Hes 7-6 with a 4.40 ERA all-time against Milwaukee (17 games, 16 starts) and 1-0 this year after striking out 13 in a 5-3 victory over the Brewers on July 21.Its just one of those nights where youre like, Man, thank God Im not facing him. He was on, said Pirates outfielder Matt Joyce.Milwaukee has been a miserable destination for the Pirates, who are 17-63 at Miller Park since the start of 2007. During that same stretch, the Brewers are 102-56 over Pittsburgh overall, good for the second-best winning percentage of any team against a divisional opponent in all of baseball. But while the Pirates as a team have struggled, Andrew McCutchen has done well, collecting 120 hits against the Brewers since the start of the 2008 season while Josh Harrison has gone 15-for-41 with two triples and five RBI in his last 11 games against Milwaukee. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Bennie Fowler isnt content to be known as the guy who caught Peyton Mannings last NFL pass. With the work hes putting in during training camp, the Denver Broncos wideout is planning on hauling in more receptions this season.Fowler is one of several young receivers competing for the No. 3 spot behind veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders in coach Gary Kubiaks offense. Cody Latimer, Jordan Norwood and Jordan Taylor also have made an impression in the first eight days of camp. That quartet is feeling more comfortable after one year in Kubiaks offense. All have made plays in camp that brought cheers from the fans on hand and adulation from veterans and coaches. The guys in the front office definitely got a tough decision to make in terms of who theyre going to keep because every guy out heres been making plays, said Sanders, who enjoyed a day off Friday. Its a very positive thing that weve got so much depth that they have to make a tough decision. I feel like the wide receiver corps can be the central point of this offense and this team. With Manning retired and Kubiaks emphasis on running the ball, the passing game isnt expected to be as big a factor as it was the last four seasons. The receivers are trying to make a case for throwing the ball more, even with the uncertainty at quarterback. Its extremely competitive and thats a good thing for us, Kubiak said. The young receivers have taken turns making big plays and helping each of the quarterbacks look good in scrimmages this week. Fowler made a catch down the sidelines on a throw from Trevor Siemian, Norwood got a ball in traffic from Mark Sanchez over the middle later Friday and rookie Mose Frazier caught a fade from rookie Paxton Lynch in the corner of the end zone.Latimer and Taylor also havve had their moments.ddddddddddddennie Fowlers been making plays, Codys been making plays, Jordan Taylors been making plays, Sanders said. Its a good thing.Fowler, Latimer and Norwood already have played on the biggest stage, so training camp is not as intimidating. Norwood set a Super Bowl record with a 61-yard punt return and Fowler caught a 2-point conversion that gave Denver a 24-10 lead on Carolina with 3:08 left, effectively clinching the championship. It turned out to be the last completion of Mannings 18-year career, and Fowler later gave the ball to the quarterback.Instead of resting on that play, Fowler has elevated his game, which Kubiak has noticed.Bennies had an excellent camp, the coach said. When you get into that third year you start to see, `Hey, I can be a starter. Bennie sees himself at another level and hes willing to work toward it. Im very proud of him.Fowler spent 2014 on the practice squad and finished 2015 with 16 receptions for 203 yards in addition to playing special teams. Hes counting on that versatility to earn his spot this season.Special teams is the way I made the team last year and thats the way Im going to make it this year, he said.Game notes The Broncos waived G/C Sam Brenner and signed rookie OL Mathu Gibson. Brenner had been out after suffering a concussion early in camp. ... Latimer practiced Friday, a day after having his hand examined. ... Many veterans sat out or were limited in Fridays practice. Chris Harris Jr., Derek Wolf, T.J. Ward and Brandon Marshall were among the defensive players that didnt practice.
