Post his widely-appreciated film Omkara, preparations were on in full swing for Vishal Bharadwaj’s bio-pic on Mary Ann Evans aka Fearless Nadia, the yesteryear Hindi film actress for producers UTV Motion Pictures. For nearly three months in 2007, Bharadwaj and his team of assistants worked single-mindedly on Julia. A sprawling new office at Laxmi Industrial Estate in Andheri was rented and a super-efficient team from the advertising / film fraternity was hired to start preparations for the project.
Since Vishal is a celebrated filmmaker, talks are that UTV was even willing to pay him a director’s fee of Rs 4 crore. Franka Potente, who shot to international fame in Run Lola Run, was flown down to Mumbai to enact the role of Nadia. She was put up at a five-star hotel in Juhu for a long spell. Besides learning Hindi language, the actress also had costumes fittings. She even participated in the pre-production meetings with Bharadwaj and his team at a suburban five star hotel. “Vishal had also spoken to Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan for the lead roles,” confirms one of the assistants who worked closely on the preparations of Julia. In fact, Dutt’s manager Kaleem was also part of the date-matching exercise between the lead players.
However, when Kaleem left Sanjay Dutt’s services, Bharadwaj’s Julia was pushed on the back burner. “Vishal was so hurt and embarrassed by the whole turn of events, that he actually lost heart,” says the assistant. A disillusioned Potente flew back home disappointed that her Bollywood debut came unstuck. Sometime around end-2007, UTV backed out of the project because they allegedly felt that the budget of Julia was becoming unviable. Strong rumours have it that even before a single frame of the film had been shot, Julia had already cost Bharadwaj and UTV something to the tune of Rs 7 crore.
While Dutt is not directly responsible for this, those who spent three precious months working on the preparations for Julia feel terribly let-down. In his sms, Dutt’s current manager, Dharam Oberoi says, “Don’t know anything about UTV. The movie getting stalled had nothing to do with Mr Dutt.”
Since UTV had officially backed out of the project months ago, queries to their top executive about whether the Julia imbroglio had indeed cost the company Rs 7 crore, as is rumoured, went unanswered.
However, according a trade insider, Bharadwaj and UTV are likely to collaborate for another film project soon. Guess some of the lost money and a lot of the heartburn will be salvaged.
... The industry's troubles began at the start of the year itself. The first big release - "Halla Bol" - was made with all sincerity but it did not have the desired effect at the box-office and was at best an average performer. For its star, Ajay Devgan, the second disappointment came in the form of audience rejection of his "Sunday". ...
... Next up, Delnaazz has Khalbali Hai Khalbali, another comedy, starring Nikhil Dwivedi and Southern sensation Sada in the lead roles. Alongside, she’s also experimenting in Kumar Mangat’s Toonpur Ka Superhero, where she shares screen space with Ajay Devgan and Kajol. “On the one hand, I’m playing me, a naughty, bubbly, dominant character, but it’s different because the film has a combination of animated and real-life characters. ...
Filmistan studio in Goregaon was abuzz with activity the other day.
After all, Ajay Devgan and Kajol were shooting there for Kumar Mangat’s Haal-e-dil and so even at 7 in the morning, the place was a hub of noise and chatter as the dancers got ready to shoot the song Oye Hoye. Kajol, dressed in a rust and maroon salwar kameez and wearing big dangling earrings, was dot on time.
Even though Mangat’s daughter, newcomer Amita Pathak had practiced the steps, she was a tad nervous dancing with Kajol. But Kajol, who’s very fond of Amita and had agreed to shoot for the song only because of Amita, casually chatted with her and made Amita feel at ease.
While all this was happening, Ajay was busy having a light conversation with the other newcomer Nakul Mehta. Now with all four ready, what was left to do but shoot the song. A whole lot of jhatkas and matkas and Ajay and Kajol rocked the dance floor! Say Oye hoye!
Oye hoye!
South sensation Asin is going places even before her first film hits the screens. Asin will be seen making her debut in the much-hyped Ghajini. She has now signed two new films.
Asin has agreed to star in Vipul Shah’s Salman Khan-Ajay Devgan starrer London Dreams, in which she will be paired opposite Salman. She has also signed Venus’ film to be directed by Priyadarshan, opposite Akshay Kumar.
This sure makes Asin one of the hottest newcomers with films opposite stars like Aamir, Salman and Akshay Kumar even before Ghajini hits the theatres.
Just what the daughter ordered - a break for Ajay Devgan EntertaintmentTeam 10 June, 2008 04:03:17
After shooting non-stop for Gol Maal Returns in Goa, Ajay Degvan had no choice but to take a longish break for almost a month - his daughter ordered and he had to comply.
"I had no choice in the matter. It was my daughter Nysa's command. And she's the only woman in my life who can make me dance around her little finger. Now that she's all of five, her demands are far more vocal."
It was daughter Nysa who noticed Ajay's absence from the Devgan household. "I had been shooting non-stop for U Me Aur Hum. Then after the promotion and press for my film, I left for Goa for Gol Maal. That didn't go down well with my daughter."
Last month, little Nysa forced Ajay to cancel all his engagements and be at home. "And you know what? I actually enjoy her bullying. I loved spending time with her."
This was the first time that Ajay spent so much time with his daughter. And he wants to make a habit of it.
But isn't there trouble ahead, what with Kajol agreeing to finally say yes to another feature film and that too, to be shot far away from home in the US?
"You mean Karan Johar's film?" Ajay catches on. "No that won't be a problem. I will try to spend as much time with Nysa as possible. But otherwise my parents are as good as us for her. She believes she has two sets of parents. So leaving her at home is not a problem."
As for Kajol working again, Ajay is the epitome of a liberal husband. "She's an extremely talented artiste and we all look forward to her films. I'm very happy that she's working again. She should and must do exactly what makes her happy."
Speaking on his directorial plans, Ajay says the casting is a long way off. "I read that I had approached Kareena which was news to me. I haven't finalised my script. So how can I ask her or any other actor to be part of my next film? For now I'm happy to have Kareena as my co-star in Gol Maal Returns. In fact, we leave for Bangkok in a couple of days to shoot the last song. The sequel is much bigger than the first part. "
So will Kajol be in all his films?
"Definitely not! Why should she be in all our productions? In fact, even I won't star in all the films I direct. Casting would depend entirely on suitability. And if I feel some other actor suits my next film I direct I won't cast myself in my next film."
Ajay has no regrets about his first directorial venture. "I could blame the IPL for the film's performance. But that would just be an excuse. U Me Aur Hum was never designed as a blockbuster. It dealt with a serious issue and we got the audience that we wanted. It touched people's hearts. My happiest moment was when the other day I got to know a call centre in Mumbai has put up U Me Aur Hum as their slogan."
Ajay finally gets dreamy.
"I want to blend out-and-out entertainers like Gol Maal Returns with more meaningful cinema. Both are equally important."
Action films in India have progressed by leaps and bounds. From the 'dishoom-dishoom' varieties to the more sophisticated versions, the adrenaline in Indian films has always been ascending. In these action films, there are some scenes that are etched in the audiences' mind for showing something different and interesting.
We list down a few memorable action scenes from our Hindi films.
Ajay Devgan in Phool Aur Kaante
The first ever scene of Ajay Devgan in a Hindi film was an action scene and one that will be remembered amongst the most popular scenes. It wasn't any fight sequence as such but a scene where Ajay Devgan played a wannabe college student who makes an entry in the campus standing atop the pillion seat of two speeding bikes. It was a uniquely conceptualized sequence for that period, choreographed by his father Veeru Devgan who was a renowned action director in films. One can easily say that Ajay made an action-packed entry in Bollywood.
When he started, Ajay Devgan had a very action oriented image, post which he tried his hands at other genres like drama, comedy and romance. More recently he repeated the Phool Aur Kaante act in Golmaal where he made an entry in an exactly similar fashion.
Bollywood was back to the podium with the Annual National Awards which were announced on Tuesday, June 10 in New Delhi
Auszug:
... Vishal Bharadwaj
(Winner special Jury award for Omkara): "I never have expectations as I feel you don't win when you expect it. This award is more prestigious than the best director award. I'm very happy for Konkona, she deserved the award, but I'm also a little sad that Saif didn't win one." ...
It's recent that we are being bombarded with billboards and trailers of a film titled Mehbooba . Starring Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala, the film we hear was made in the fossil-age.
And while none of the actors seem to want to talk about it – even though they're looking younger and better - we must doff our hats to the gutsy makers of this one, who have gone all out and ensured that their efforts see light of day...even if all it has taken them is nine long years.

Kumar Mangat's HAAL-E-DIL is generating the right kind of buzz in the industry. Mangat who is working very hard has left no stones unturned to promote his daughter Amita's debut film HAAL-E-DIL under the Big Screen Entertainment banner.
Though the release date is just a week away, Mangat has now roped in Ajay Devgan and Kajol for HAAL-E-DIL. The duo recently shot a Punjabi song called 'Oye Hoye', composed by Anand Raj Anand, at Filmistan studio, Mumbai with the starcast - Nakuul Mehta and Amita Pathak. Even though the music album has already been released producer Mangat is planning to incorporate this newly shot song in the movie. When we asked Mangat whether the couple is a surprise package in the film he said, 'No, Ajay and Kajol will shake their legs only for this new song, they are not playing any role as such.'
Ajay's Business manager Kumar Mangat is extremely fond of Ajay and Kajol. He always wanted the couple to be part of his daughter's debut movie HAAL-E-DIL. 'I always wanted Ajay and kajol to be a part of HAAL-E-DIL. Right from day one they supported me. They even said, 'We are like family and whatever help I call for they will lend it.' In fact Ajayji took care right from pre-production stage of the film right from music, casting, etc', says Mangat.
We asked him about Amita's experience with Kajol? 'It was extremely good. She enjoyed a lot. She was quite comfortable sharing screen space with the star couple. Kajol and Ajay made Amita feel at ease. They always gave a familial gesture to Amita', concluded Mangat.
It seems, with the added zing, Kumar Mangat's dream project is only getting better!
It is a friendly gesture from Ajay Devgan and Kajol towards their friend Kumar Mangat .
The celebrity couple has made a special appearance in a song in Mangat’s film Haal-e-Dil which is the launch pad of Amita Pathak , daughter of Mangat.
Ajay has been associated with the film from the start. He had his say in picking the right script and even finalizing the male stars opposite Amita. The movie is directed by Ajay’s brother Anil Devgan.
The Devgans are apparently leaving no stone unturned to make sure Amita’s first film grabs many eyeballs.
To add star value to ‘Haal-e-Dil’ (which features only newcomers) Ajay and Kajol have now shot a song for the movie at Filmistan Studios.
Titled ‘Oye Hoye’, the song is a Punjabi number in which Kajol and Ajay shake their legs with Amita and her co-stars Nakuul Mehta and Adhyayan .
Kajol wore a colorful salwar-kameez for the number while Ajay was dressed in coat and pants. The two had a blast dancing together.

Years back Ismail Darbar had stormed into the Bollywood music scene with HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM. The blockbuster album was followed by DEVDAS which was successful as well and just when it seemed that Darbar had really arrived, duds like TERA JADOO CHAL GAYA, SHAKTI - THE POWER, DEEWANGEE and BAAZ diluted the impact
Now years after being heard last as a composer and mainly seen as a talent show judge, Darbar returns with his score for MEHBOOBA. Well, even this too is not a comeback in true terms since Afzal Khan directed MEHBOOBA (starring Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Manisha Koirala) is a film which has been a decade long in the making and is now finally seeing the light of the day.
However, contrary to what one would believed before playing on the album, the music of MEHBOOBA pleasantly surprises, even though from sheer nostalgia factor. What one hears is a sound that is so close to the style of Laxmikant Pyaarelal that one tends to start drawing comparisons for each of the 8 songs that fills this album.
In the soundtrack of MEHBOOBA, what impresses most is the sheer grandeur in terms of arrangements and orchestra which promises something big on the silver screen. The songs may not have the kind of club sound with rhythm galore, something which dominates the soundtracks today, but does carry an old world nostalgic quotient which brings Laxmikant Pyaarelal closer home.
Whether it is 'Khwabo Ki Rani Hai', 'Dilruba Teri Aankhe Palkhe', 'Yaar Tera Shukriya Pyar Tera Shukriya', 'Babuji Bahut Dukhta Hai' or 'Kuch Kar Lo Kuch' - each of these songs has a distinct LP touch to it! MEHBOOBA is grand, no doubt about that. Also, there is no doubt about the fact that if released 8-10 years back, it would have been a certain hit.
Also, another interesting factor is the lyrics by Late Anand Bakshi saab, which makes MEHBOOBA as perhaps lyricist's last work. Well, Bakshi saab would have been happy if the album would have released when he was alive since Ismail Darbar doesn't let him down!
Chandigarh, June 15: Promotion of Bollywood's romantic flick 'Haal-e-dil', which is produced by veteran Bollywood producer Kumar Mangat was held in Chandigarh.
Present at the occasion was the cast and the crew of the film.
The film is produced by Kumar Mangat and directed by Anil Devgan brother of noted actor Ajay Devgan.
'Haal-e-dil' stars three debutant actors Amita Pathak, Nakuul Mehta and Adhyayan Suman.
Bollywood's big stars like Kajol and Ajay Devgan have made special appearance in the film.
Kumar Mangat, the producer of the film said that he worked very hard during the making of this film and now it's up to the audiences to either accept it or reject it.
"We have made this film with a lot of hard work and after doing ample research. Finally it is the audiences who will decide if the film works or fails at the box-office," said Kumar Mangat.
Kumar Mangat's daughter Amita Pathak has made her Bollywood debut with this film.
"I think I'm very lucky as my father belongs to the film industry and Devgan family has supported me althrough the making of this film. I feel very happy as I have the support of entire industry with me because I was born and brought up here. I think my father has ensured that my dream of becoming a heroine is fulfilled," said Amita.
Another debutant actor Nakuul Mehta said that unique selling proposition of this film was its story line.
"I think the unique selling proposition of this film is its story. If you take the example of any good film its biggest asset is its story not the star cast. The story of this film is a love story and every love story follows a similar formula but the treatment which the writer and the director of film give to the film sets it apart," said Nakuul Mehta.
Vishal Bharadwaj, Anand Raj Anand, Pritam Chakraborty and Raghav Sachar have rendered music of the film while Munna Dhiman, Sameer, Shabbir Ahmed and Aditya Dhar have penned its lyrics.
Anil Devgan impressed one and all with the deft and professional handling of his first film RAJU CHACHA starring Ajay Devgan and Kajol. He followed it up with BLACKMAIL in 2005. And now HAAL-E-DIL is Anil's third directorial venture which marks the debut of three promising newcomers, Adhyayan Suman, Nakuul Mehta and Amita Pathak. As the film is nearing its release let's know the director Anil Devgan's 'haal-e-dil' at the moment...
Earlier you have worked with established actors, this is your first time with newcomers, how was the experience? It was marvelous. They were more enthusiastic than me. I personally enjoyed it very much working with them. Though they are new faces in the industry but they were quite acquainted with the system. They gave 100% from their end and were well prepared to start.
Why newcomers this time? My script made me caste newcomers. I and Kumarji right from the scripting stage had this in mind.
Did it require more handwork to translate your thoughts on screen? One thing I would like to tell you is that acting cannot be taught. These kids (newcomers) were so well prepared and focused about their work that it hardly required me to poke my nose. I don't think I ever had to put that extra effort in explaining things to these new kids.
Your apprehensions about HAAL-E-DIL? I am quite positive about HAAL-E-DIL. The film was a wonderful journey. It was more like a picnic for us. Though we faced minor problems while shooting in Leh-Ladakh but enjoyed maximum there. I have worked with Kumarji earlier also and this time also it was fun. I expect good results out of it.
In all of your movies Ajay Devgan has been a regular feature, this time too he is doing an appearance in HAAL-E-DIL? Do you consider him lucky? Ajay has been a strong pillar in my career. He's been my mentor and I have learnt a lot from him as a technician, good humanism, etc. He is such a positive person who makes the overall environment comfortable. When you have such powerful positive energies around you, one would always want to have them. Ajay's presence is a good feeling.
Your last film BLACKMAIL was in 2005, earlier RAJU CHACHA in 2000 and now HAAL-E-DIL in 2008, why such long gaps? I am 'one-film at a time' person. I prefer going at my own pace. If a particular subject demands a detailed research work to be done than in that case the film gets delayed. That's why my films appear after prolonged gaps.
USP of HAAL-E-DIL? 3 new faces and their performance, script, music, high production values, the exotic feel, the way the film is being treated all make the film very special.
Do you think love story is an ideal formula to launch newcomers? Yes, love stories have a universal appeal; it is well received by all especially youngsters. They easily connect with the characters. Ideally speaking script, performance of an actor and good music are the three important required factors for an actor especially newcomer to make its mark. And whenever love stories are in place music has to be good. Music becomes the star of the film. It easily pulls the audience to theatres atleast in the initial stages.
Are you nervous about the competition around since KHUSHBOO which is also a love story with newcomers is set to release on the same date? No, I am not at all scared. In the past many films have faced such situations and they did well. Competition is here to stay; you can't run away from it. When you are in the market you obviously have to face it.
But media and people bluntly compare about it, so how you take it? That's eternal. Whether in good taste or bad taste you can't avoid such things. You have to move on.
Future projects? Right now am just thinking about HAAL-E-DIL. I have already completed few subjects but yet to narrate and discuss it with producers. I can't tell anything right now.
Aditya Chopra’s timeless tale, DDLJ appears to have been usurped by Anil Devgan for his next
After directing Raju Chacha and Blackmail, Anil Devgan is returning with Haal-E-Dil, starring newcomers Nakuul Mehta, Amita Pathak and Adhyayan Suman and produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak.
DDLJ ka 10 ka dum
Says a source, “For his third, Anil Devgan wanted to choose a story that was universally accepted as he didn’t want to go wrong this time. What better than DDLJ a timeless love story that has been running successfully for the last ten years?
Like DDLJ, Anil’s Haal-E-Dil is about two strangers, Shekhar and Sanjana (a young boy and girl played by Nakuul and Amita) living in London, going on a holiday but missing the train, embarking together on a journey in Europe and finally falling in love. While Sanjana confides in her mom about her dilemma Shekhar goes to the girl’s village in Punjab to woo her and her family.”
Pointing out more similarities, the source adds, “Like Raj (Shah Rukh) does in DDLJ, Shekhar woos and wins over her family but there’s a twist in the tale when Rohit (Adhyayan) comes into it. Sanjana’s marriage is fixed to Rohit. Amita has a Kajol fixation and is dressed like her in the film.
There’s even a song between Shekhar and Sanjana amongst the sarson ka khet in Punjab and a song similar to Zara sa jhoom loon shot in Switzerland! Shekhar is seen strumming a guitar like SRK played the banjo while Sanjana is a simple girl with spectacles who loves reading books a la Kajol.”
However producer Kumar Mangat denies that his film is anything like DDLJ, “Haal-E-Dil is not a remake. It’s a love story with similar situations like DDLJ where the hero and heroine meet on a train and fall in love and the hero goes to the village to woo her family. It’s just coincidences.
The universal theme of love and boy meeting girl on train is common for 5 out of 10 films.”
Has he seen DDLJ? “Yes I have seen it at least 20 times. It’s a masterpiece and is going on even now. It’s the ultimate in romance and a perfect love story.”
