Mumbai: The film-makers of Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, a film which had got lots of publicity as Ajay Devgan was set to play Haji Mastan, are doing a complete U-turn now by saying that there is no character in their film which is based on the smuggler-turned-film producer.
"There is no character in our film which is inspired by Haji's life. In fact the reports are nothing but media speculation. Ajay's character is just a character in the film. The film is about Mumbai of the '70s where big gangsters ruled the city but there is no direct resemblance to anyone," director Milan Luthria told us.
Interesting comment since Milan had earlier come on record with us saying, "Since the film is about gangsters and the underworld of the '70s, we have drawn instances from the lives of gang lords of those days like Haji Mastan, Karim Lala and Vardarajan." His star cast was also candid about their characters.
"The character will be inspired by Haji Mastan, but I won't be copying him," Ajay had said in an earlier interview. Kangna Ranaut had also come on record saying that she would be meeting Haji's wife Sona who was one of the starlets of the 1970s to prepare for the character and know more about their romance and relationship.
It seems like reports about Haji's daughter Shamshad Supari-wala contemplating to sue the film-makers has apparently made them go on a back-foot. Sources say that the original character sketch of Ajay is being changed so that it doesn't exactly resemble Haji to avoid complications.
An industry insider says, "The news that Ajay is playing Haji and Kangna his beloved wife has been so circulated that his family has got curious about how Haji's life is being presented on celluloid. But now the film-makers are thinking of avoiding any direct reference to Haji as obviously they don't want any roadblocks for the film."

After reading our headlines, our patrons must be wondering what we are upto, but there is a definite solid logic behind it. As those who follow Hindi films will know that OMKARA and the upcoming KAMINEY have both been directed by maverick director, Vishal Bhardwaj, the first film has already released (a few years back!) to a stupendous critical success and the other is still awaiting its release soon.
OMKARA, starring Ajay Devgan in the title role, along with Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi and Konkona Sen Sharma, still remains one of the favourite movies of none other than its lead actor, Ajay Devgan. A big fan of the Vishal Bhardwaj kind of cinema, Ajay has recently said that he is pretty excited about Vishal's next venture, KAMINEY, starring Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Amol Gupte. Ajay has not been privileged enough to be called for a private screening of KAMINEY by Vishal, but it's the superb promos of the same that have excited, Ajay aka OMKARA. And he has admitted that KAMINEY is the film that he wants to see, once it releases.
Huge praises coming from ace actor, and we are sure KAMINEY is one of the most anticipated movies of most movie buffs.
The immediate professional impact of Feroz Khan's death was on Ajay Devgan's production of Rohit Shetty's comedy All The Best.
A long schedule was supposed to start in Goa with Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and Ajay Devgan. However, after Feroz Khan passed away, Ajay immediately postponed the schedule.
Says a source close to the project, "It would be deeply inhuman to expect Fardeen to fulfill his professional duties, especially when it meant trying to act funny in front of the camera for a comedy at a time like this. Fardeen is yet to recover fully. But he will be joining the unit in Goa this week."
For Sanjay Dutt who has been out of acting for three months and was looking forward to getting back before the camera, this postponement meant some more waiting before returning to his favourite activity.
But Bipasha Basu proceeded to Goa anyway for an impromptu holiday to wait for Shetty's unit. Her entire family of parents, sister, brother-in-law and nephew and niece were with her.
Bipasha has now become a master at making optimum use of postponed schedules. When Rahul Dholakia's Kashmir saga Lamhaa got postponed by a month, Bipasha quickly signed on to learn driving and swimming.
"And now I'm putting my swimmimg skills to use in Goa as I wait for my film to start," says Bipasha from Goa.
The delay in the Goa schedule, incidentally, would cost Dutt dearly in terms of time. After a month of shooting for Ajay Devgan and director Rohit Shetty in Goa, he heads for South Africa to shoot with Anil Kapoor for another comedy No Problem directed by Anees Bazmee.
Yes, Sanjay Dutt is back to doing what he does the best.
Bollywood has been learning to rock. Last year we saw Farhan Akhtar and the boys as Magik, a jaded bunch of rockers coming back together to regain some lost glory, and now we hear Parmeet Sethi's making a very similar film but setting it in Punjab for Yash Raj Film.
Meanwhile, Vipul Shah's next big film features Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin, and is rumoured to be about a UK-based rock band. It remains to be seen if they sing about laundry bills as well.
We aren't quite there yet. With the exception of Anurag Kashyap's unreleased cult hit Paanch, and a couple of songs on his brilliant DevD and Gulaal soundtracks, Bollywood might be strumming but the feel hasn't quite kicked in yet.
And till we get there, let's look to the West. Here's a look at the best fictional rockers of all time.

The first time that Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan shared screen space was in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, the result was earth-shattering, to say the least. The super-hit film saw the duo winning tremendous accolades for their warm vibes that translated into some superb scenes on-screen, as they romanced former Miss World, Aishwaraya Rai-Bachchan, in their own characteristic style - Salman the eternal, charming, care-a-damn lover boy and Ajay, the sincere, serious and unselfish husband.
Naturally, as Vipul Shah brings together these awesome-twosome in his next, LONDON DREAMS, the audience is super excited to be able to (hopefully!) witness a repeat of the same chemistry, especially now that they are paired opposite the hottest new sensation of the year, Asin, of GHAJINI fame.
Asin too on her part seems to be quite taken in by her co-stars and is all praise for them. She says that Ajay and Salman are extremely easy artists to work with and she had a terrific time while shooting with them in London and Paris, where most of the outdoor schedules have taken place. They are both down to earth, and without an iota of pride or haughtiness. Since Asin plays an artist who is an important part of a music band, which has Ajay and Salman as its lead singer, so naturally she was required to shoot mostly with both the stars, who she found very easy and cooperative to work with. Asin adds that never once did they impose their seniority, and in fact they all used to chat a lot with her and even indulged in shopping together, especially in London.
From Aamir to Salman and Ajay. Is King Khan next on your radar Asin? Well, some gals have all the luck! May lady luck keep smiling on you, and you keep delivering blockbusters after blockbusters.
Don't scoff yet. The actress, who will be seen next in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, is doing a lot of research on her character in the film, which is apparently based on 1970s smuggler Haji Mastan's girlfriend, Sona.
Directed by Milan Luthria, the film also stars Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi.
To get into the skin of the character, Kangna decided to study yesteryear actresses from both Bollywood and Hollywood like Asha Parekh, Sophia Loren and Sadhana.
Her favourite is clearly Audrey Hepburn whose classy dress sense inspired Kangna to stock up on high-waisted, narrow trousers and scarves.
It helps that Kangna bears a resemblance to the Hollywood legend.
Make-up plays a crucial part here and Kangna plans to go with long eyelashes and heavy eye make-up.
Will Kangna pass off for Ms Hepburn? With designer Uday Kuckian's help we decided to do a makeover from some of Hepburn's classic movies. Keep clicking for the results.
Ajay Devgan flew down to Kolkata recently for a couple of days and we wondered if it was a professional commitment that drew him there. But our sources tell us that none of his films are being shot in Kolkata at the moment and everyone knows Ajay doesn’t endorse too many brands, so the trip couldn’t have been for a commercial shoot either.
After a bit of snooping around, we stumbled upon a well kept secret. Ajay had flown down to Kolkata to meet Ravana director Mani Ratnam with whom he had worked in Yuva earlier. Ratnam was shooting for his upcoming film with Govinda and other actors in the film while Abhi-Ash were in Mumbai. But it wasn’t just a friendly visit by Devgan; he was there to shoot for a guest appearance he is doing in the film, say our sources.
Ratnam was keen on having Ajay, as the role needed someone with a stature to stand up against Abhishek in the film. and the latter readily agreed as only four days of his time were required. He has already completed a two-day shoot in Kolkata and will face the camera with Abhishek in Chennai soon. Ajay, we are told has done the guest appearance free of cost, as Mani is one of his favourite directors.
The ‘Fashion’ fille of B-town is all swamped in terrible scenario as she was hit badly by a road-accident. Suffering severely from neck injury, the actress could find solace from an unexpected chap in tinsel town. Ajay Devgan, her co-star and producer of forthcoming film ‘All the Best’ had not just complimented with ‘Get Well greetings’, but sent his personal doctor… Much eased in her spirits, Mugdha said that last week’s accident had really caused her grievous neck injury. Even the neck collar bought no relief for this actress. When she could hardly move on few steps within her home, she buzzed up Ajay to inform that it’s impossible to join the film’s sets for the following schedule. The actor had sent his doctor Dr. Dilip and his cousin Vikrant Sharma for extending her more comfort.
Looks like the actress cannot stop singing appraisals of Ajay Devgan who continues adding more, “This is the first time I am working with Ajay and he’s so kind enough with more humanity. Things are turning to be better for me now and I’ll have to move on slowly.”
Luthria claims his film is not based on Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim May 11th, 2009 - 4:14 pm ICT by sampurn
After his last release, Hat-trick, two years back, Milan Lutharia is now busy making Once Upon A Time In Mumbai starring Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi together for the first time apart from Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai. The film is reportedly based on the lives of gangsters Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibrahim, whose characters are supposedly being enacted by Devgan and Hashmi respectively.
But Milan us quick to deny this. He states that it has been wrongly reported in the media that the film is based on Haji Mastan and Dawood. He further adds that his is a contemporary film though it is set in the 70s and that it is definately not based on any particular gangster as per speculations. Milan claims that his film in fact focuses on many gangsters of the 70s era and should not be considered as the biopic of the above mentioned two underworld dons.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is a joint production between Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures and Sunil Shetty’s Popcorn Entertainment. Apart from Mumbai, the film is going to be shot in Vishakhapatnam, Dubai and Bangkok. -Sampurn Media
Mumbai, May 12 (IANS) She was ignored in part two of 2002 movie “Raaz” and now she is not in the sequel of last year’s hit thriller “Race”. But Bipasha Basu is not complaining and says it’s a tradition in Bollywood not to repeat actresses in sequels.
“I heard even Abbas-Mustan are not doing ‘Race 2′. If the original directors are not doing the sequel, who am I? I haven’t been approached for ‘Race 2′. That’s fine,” Bipasha told IANS.
“In Bollywood, the heroines are never signed for sequels. It’s a tradition. Just check the sequels. The guys get repeated. The girls don’t. It’s a man’s world. I don’t feel like a second citizen for that. When ‘Raaz 2′ was made everyone kept asking why I wasn’t in it. But I never worried about that. No point in crying about it,” she added.
The original “Raaz” starred Bipasha with Dino Morea and was directed by Vikram Bhatt. Part two, titled “Raaz - The Mystery Continues”, featured Kangana Ranaut, Adhyayan Suman and Emraan Hashmi. Directed by Mohit Suri, the horror thriller was released early this year and did satisfactory business at the ticket window.
Spurned by the “Race” producers, Tips Films, Abbas-Mustan are planning to revive their long-forgotten shelved project “Mr. Fraud” for Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd and the actress says she will be really happy if the film sees the light of day.
“If ‘Mr. Fraud’ is revived, I’d be happy to give dates. The film was shot in London and the styling was not time-bound,” she said.
Bipasha has also just signed her second comedy. Coincidentally it reprises the “Mr. Fraud” trio - Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Bipasha.
“That’s right Sanjay, Ajay and I are together again in ‘All The Best’. This is the one film I’ll enjoy doing. I had a ball doing ‘No Entry’. Initially I had too many inhibitions about Bollywood. ‘No Entry’ made me drop those inhibitions. I’m sure Rohit Shetty’s ‘All The Best’ will make me more uninhibited. It’s a fun film and I don’t have to always do roles that reflect my personality. Sometimes it’s fun to do a fun film,” said the actress.
Bipasha has signed only one film this year.
“I don’t want do any more work than my pace allows me. I don’t want to compete with anybody. I’ve made a niche right from my first film. I’m Bipasha Basu. I don’t think there’s any replacement for that. I enjoy my work.
“But there so much more to my vocation as an actor than just acting. I can do stage shows, be a businesswoman, work for social causes. I keep busy 24×7. At this stage of my life I don’t need to sit and pine for a role,” Bipasha said.

5000 youngsters readily play a live audience for a song starring Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin in London Dreams
Not many youngsters would want to miss a chance to watch Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin perform live. This is how filmmaker Vipul Shah decided to make things easier when he wanted a young audience for a live concert to be filmed on the three stars in his forthcoming film, London Dreams. Vipul put up ads in newspapers and posters in clubs inviting youngsters to watch the stars perform live. Needless to say, youngsters readily came to the shoot to see their favourite stars.
A source said, “As Vipul wanted to tap into the infectious enthusiasm of a live audience, he did not settle for junior artistes. Ads were published in local newspapers and he also put up posters in colleges and clubhouses in Pune, Kharghar and Vashi. As a result, 5000 youngsters showed up for the shooting at ND Studios, Karjat where interiors of London’s Wembley stadium was recreated.”
The song Jashn hai jeet ka is a six-minute song.
Vipul Shah confirmed the news and said, “Yes, we put up posters inviting youngsters to watch Salman and Ajay perform live on our sets. The shooting was not only a means to tap into the enthusiastic mood of a concert but was also an acid test for my music as it was a live shoot with a multi-camera set up. Once the music started, everybody got into a lively mood. The song was shot with 18 cameras and we used 54 positions. I am happy with the result.”
Ajay and Kajol – This we call as a ‘thanda’ couple. Seldom does this couple make any news. We guess Mr. and Mrs. Devgan seriously need to renew their vows to bring in some newness and vibrancy in their relationship. Come on guys; don’t forget you are a Bollywood couple!
Akshay Kumar Rs 3.5-4 crore Shilpa Shetty Rs 2 crore (MLA’s wedding in Indore) Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Rs 3 crore (Mittal wedding) Shah Rukh Khan Rs 3.5 crore (Govani wedding)
Frowned upon a few years back, film stars dancing and performing at weddings has now become the norm
He can easily be called the brand ambassador of weddings. It was way back in the mid-’90s when Shah Rukh Khan decided to make that extra buck at a wedding in Delhi. It was the first time a film celebrity danced at a wedding and was clearly frowned upon!
But the quick money was too good to resist and soon many actors followed suit putting on their dancing shoes at weddings and going home with mega-bucks. The recent Govani wedding was a classic case. It is reported that SRK was there for precisely 27 minutes and walked away Rs 3.5 crore richer. Bipasha Basu charged 70 lakhs, Rani Mukerji with 50, Emraan Hashmi with 30 and Neil Nitin Mukesh 20 for the same wedding. Akshay Kumar, who was approached for the same reportedly demanded 6 crore instead of his regular 3.5-4 crore. Bunty Walia of GS Entertainment, who had managed the entire event, says, “SRK, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor are the most in demand today for high-profile weddings. Amongst the girls it is Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone. Both the client and the event management company decide who will perform. But when it comes to expensive stars, it is the client who decides.”
These wedding budgets run into crores and stars are only too happy to be a part of them. Celina Jaitley, who had performed at the Mittal wedding in Paris and now once again at the Govani pre-wedding party says. “To me it is the family and the event management company that matters more than the money.
And the Govanis are like family. Don’t we dance at our cousin’s or friend’s weddings? ”
Neil, who performed for the first time at the same wedding ,was quite upbeat. “It was the first time I performed at a wedding and it was fun,” he quips. Mugdha Godse, who has been asked to perform at weddings, but has resisted till now, says, “It’s an actor’s job to entertain and dancing at weddings is one way to entertain. I do not have a song I can perform on, but when I have, I definitely will!”
According to Tanushree Dutta, today, most of the weddings are gala events and the shows are choreographed and planned like award functions. “Of course, I use my discretion where I should perform, but generally we feel secure at these places as everything about our security is taken care of.”
Except for SRK, most of the stars do not like to say that it is the money which attracts them, but the fact is that besides their fat fees stars are also lavished with gifts like cars and jewelleries, especially by the NRIs. Russian dancers are in major demand for weddings and their charges go up to Rs 15 lakh for a troupe of 20 girls.
But still, there are some who refuse to bow down to the green- backs. Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Sunny and Bobby Deol, Kajol, Minissha Lamba, Ayesha Takia, Akshaye Khanna and some other actors are adamant about not performing at weddings. Ajay at one time had said dancing at shows was like doing a mujra and Sunny had once commented, “Men don’t dance!”

Veteran character artist, Asrani, is seeing rejuvenation as an actor and all credit to director Priyadarshan for that. In fact we had brought you the news about Asrani becoming a part of Priyan's DE DANA DAN and his connection with the Akshay-Priyan team.
Well, it now appears that other comedy directors too have taken a leaf out of Priyan's book and have decided to utilize the services of the talented artist. One of the directors is Rohit Shetty of GOLMAAL and GOLMAAL RETURNS fame. Asrani has been signed by Devgan Entertainment Software Ltd. for an important role in ALL THE BEST...FUN BEGINS. The ensemble star cast includes Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu , Fardeen Khan and the FASHION star, Mugdha Godse . The film, as can be gauged from its title, is an out an out entertainer and a comedy and Asrani is in a very special role.
With biggies like, DE DANA DAN with Priyan, AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI with Ranbir, Katrina and Rajkumar Santoshi, PAYING GUESTS with Shreyas - Subhash Ghai and now, ALL THE BEST...FUN BEGINS, it seems that fun has actually begun for this versatile actor, who is just beginning to get his due recognition, after basking in a one film glory (read SHOLAY and his 'Angrezon Ke Zamane Ka Jailor') for more than two decades.
übersetzt von Diwali: Ein weiteres Cast-Mitglied von All The Best wurde nun bekannt: Asrani, der u.a. in Dhamaal den autoverliebten Papa gespielt hat, wird in Ajays Film mitwirken.
While shooting Rohit Shetty’s comedy film All The Best in Goa, Bipasha Basu has been practicing swimming, though at night only.
The dusky belle shoots for the movie during the day and after pack-up she hits the gym at the hotel where she’s staying. After working out, she still has stamina enough to practice swimming, which she’s finally learning.
For those who came late, Bipasha had recently vowed to learn three things – swimming, driving and belly dancing. It may be surprising to some but Bipasha did not know how to swim until now.
However, the Bong bombshell hasn’t yet swum in the sea. The reason? She says she likes to swim at night only, but by that time it’s too dark and the tide is high in the ocean. So till now she’s been diving only in the shallow pool of the hotel.
Bipasha, who’s been shooting serious films like Pankh and Lamha lately, and that too in quite tense situations (particularly for ‘Lamha’ in Kashmir), is glad to be working in a “fun movie” like ‘All The Best’.
Moreover, she’s enjoying the company of her co-stars Ajay Devgan (an incorrigible prankster) and Sanjay Dutt who keep her entertained on the sets with their gags.
