Priyadarsan was shooting in Karaikudi for his new Hindi film with Ajay Devgan, Akshay Kumar and Bipasha Basu, when he came to know that Kanchivaram had won the National Award in the Best Feature Film category.
A very emotional Priyadarsan opens up exclusively to TOI...
Finally, you have won a National Award... Yes, it is a dream come true. I was dubbed by my critics as a crass, commercial film director, although a lot of people, including artistes and technicians, have won awards doing my films. Now, that I have won it, I’m cherishing it as this particular award means a lot to me.
This award will silence your critics... All these years, I made commercial films which were entertainers and that were aimed purely at the box-office. But, I wanted to do something different and that’s how Kanchivaram evolved. I would call it one from my heart, and have made the film with my own money. It was made for recognition and I have truly been rewarded. The critics can eat crow.
You are the only filmmaker in the country who has straddled both commercial and art-house films... The most difficult thing in the world is to make films work at the box-office. I have done it and now, I have been able to make an art-house type film work with the critics and connoisseurs of good cinema. I knew Kanchivaram would work after seeing the response to it at the festival circuits like Toronto, where audiences gave it a standing ovation.
Why did you choose Prakash Raj to do the film? Actually, when I finished the script, my buddy Mohan Lal was supposed to do the film, but he had date problems. Then I zeroed in on Prakash Raj, who I think is a fantastic actor and his dialogue delivery in Tamil gave him the edge over Mohanlal. I thought Prakash was wasting his time doing films in which he gets beaten up by guys half his size! Prakash took Kanchivaram to a different level, was totally committed and did the film without taking any remuneration. After seeing the first copy together, I told him that he would get a national award for it!
Left without his costume, the star had to make do with a borrowed dress
It happens only in India. Salman Khan recently reported on the sets of London Dreams in Punjab to shoot a few important sequences of the film; but guess what? The star was there but his costume hadn’t yet arrived. The scene required Salman to be dressed as a member of a wedding band.
To everybody’s further disappointment, it turned out that the costume wouldn’t reach the shooting location in time for Salman to don it and face the camera for ‘London Dreams’ before moving on to the shoot of his other film Veer which he couldn’t postpone.
Hard-pressed for time, Salman and director-producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah resorted to the time-tested Indian way - jugaad! The duo visited the shops and offices of local wedding bands in the vicinity and tried to look for an eye-catching dress that would also fit Salman’s body measurement. It wasn’t so easy finding one because the bandwalas hardly have a physique like that of Salman.
Eventually, it was Salman who spotted a red dress on a band member and took an immediate liking to it. Of course, the bandwalas went out of their way to help Salman bhai.
Salman eventually wore that red costume in the film. Ajay Devgan was also part of the shoot.

Last week we brought to you the five main principal characters of the rib-tickling comedy All The Best. Besides Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn, Fardeen Khan, Bipasha Basu and Mugdha Godse, the film also has a host of supporting actors who are sure to bring the house down with their funny antics. Here's taking a sneak peek at the supporting cast of All The Best
Johnny Lever as Tobu aka 'the dumb mafia' Tobu is a mafia residing in Goa and is known for giving out loans to the needy. Tobu can hear very clearly but cannot speak. He always has his signature glass and spoon in his hands through which he communicates. All he has to do is 'thak thak' to his interpreter 'Goli'(Vijay Patkar) to tapkaofy his victims. Tobu eventually becomes Dharam's (Sanjay Dutt) fan and cannot thank him enough for his million dollar thappad that just changed his life.
Vijay Patkar as Goli aka 'Tobu ki aawaaz' Initially, Goli plays the 'right hand' to the great Goa mafia, Tobu. But unfortunately, the great million dollar thappad from Dharam (Sanjay Dutt) makes him deaf, and he can't serve his master like before. His funny interpretations of Tobu's 'thak thak', after receiving the great thappad from Dharam creates a side-splitting situations making a joke out of him.
Sanjay Mishra as Raghu aka 'Raghunandandas Govardhandas Vakawle' Over-dramatic, cowardly force of nature, Raghu is one of the best characters to ever grace the screen. A slumdog millionaire with extraordinarily perfect English speaking skills only makes everybody giggle and feel sorry for him at the same time for what nature has done with him.
Ashwini Kalsekar as Mary aka 'Mehboob aaya' The maid in the mad house. Her south Indian accent and her concern for the family members, adds to the whole madness. 'Saar naak ka insurance kara lo! ' is what she keeps advising her employers. Very rightly, Prem describes Mary as 'Bahaaron phool barsaao mera mehboob 'AAYA' hai! '
Asrani as 'Vidya aka Psycho daddy' A concerned father, who turns psychotic day after day due to his daughter's subject of affection (Fardeen Khan). Eventually he agrees to give away his daughter (Mugdha Godse) to the Kapoor khandaan, but isn't sure to which of the two brothers. A whacky father who's got tons of Muhavras in his dialect and 'beti ki tension' on his head. That's Vidya's Daddy darling for you!
Mukesh Tiwari as Chauthala aka 'Bade Bhaiya ka chamcha' Mukesh Tiwari plays the link between Dharam Bhaiya (Sanjay Dutt) and Veer (Fardeen Khan). He gets pocket money to Veer's house on the 1st of every month, sent by Dharam (Sanjay Dutt). A simple soul with love in his eyes for Mary, he confusingly gets into the ruckus created by others. Prem (Ajay Devgn) often advices him 'Chhuttiyan' (Holidays) for his mental condition.
Atul Parchure as Dhondu aka 'Pareshaan Driver' Poor soul, Dhondu fits the line ‘aasmaan se tapka ...khajur mein atka! ’ to the T. From nowhere he lands up at Veer’s house and is stuck for life! His only concern is his wife Meena who is expecting any moment and he just can’t leave Veer’s house. His equation with Raghu (Sanjay Mishra) is worth a watch. The ‘Dhondu Chill’ trauma has totally driven him crazy!
Ajay Devgan,Konkona Sen will come together in ‘Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge' Published: Tue, 08 Sep 2009 at 14:02 IST
Mumbai: Bollywood stars Ajay Devgan and Konkona Sen Sharma are set to be paired with with each other for the first time ever in a comedy flick. The two critically much admired actors will reportedly make the audience laugh in Ashwini Dheer's film “Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge”, to be produced by Kumar Mangat.
Dheer said, "Yes, it is true that Ajay and Konkona have been paired in `Atithi Tum Kab Jaaoge`. But I wouldn`t like to reveal any details now."
As the title suggests, the film is about a guest who refuses to leave the house. And since it's a comedy flick, it additionally features Paresh Rawal in an important role.
Konkona is awaiting for the release of her Ranbir Kapoor starrer “Wake Up Sid” whereas Ajay is working on another untitled production with co-star Bipasha Basu.
Models turning actresses is not new to Bollywood. One such is a Marathi mulgi, who has carved a niche for herself on the silver screen after scorching the ramp, is Mugdha Godse. In Goa to shoot for Mohit Suri’s All The Best, Mugdha shared her thoughts about the two films she is doing at present.
“Both are completely different films and I have completely different look as well,” remarked Mugdha. “This is a freaky comedy, while Jail is an intense film. After Fashion, I know Madhur’s working style, but this set-up is completely new and typically commercial.”
She admitted that it was different and a little difficult initially. “Fashion was comparatively easy because I could relate to the situations, psychologically having spent five years on the ramp. Now, it is a different ball game. This is new ... the schedules, the chaos, the on-set ambience ... everything is new to me. But, no complaints. I love the chaos and am getting used to the erratic schedules.”
Mugdha is working with big-wigs of the industry in All The Best. Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and Sanjay Dutt – all are big names. “I was scared,” confessed Mugdha. “Sanjay is a big guy. And I was quite apprehensive in the beginning ... almost frightened. But he just strolled over to me on my first day and said ‘hello’. He made an effort to communicate and make me comfortable. After that, it has been a joy ride on the sets.”Are these big guys serious on the sets? “Not at all. They are continuously having fun on the sets,” she divulged. “Everyone is extremely down-to-earth. And the shooting is like a big party.”
And Jail? “Neil is a good co-actor. Acting and reacting is so much easier with him. And Madhur is a great director. He guides you all the time.”
Does she feel respected in this bad world of movies and glamour? “Oh yes!” she exclaimed. “And believe me, being a Maharashtrian has a lot to do with it. They say, ‘Oh, Marathi girl, you must be a good actor!’ This is thanks to a line of good female actors like Madhuri and Kajol that today Marathi women are considered to be great actors.”
You are another one to face the camera after the ramp. “I know. But I chose this career because I wanted to do something different after five years of the catwalk. Today, I am discovering a new me everyday,” she concludes with a smile.
Mugdha Godse had to battle some harsh rays and cold stares from her co-stars!
In the Dil Kare song in All The Best, the entire cast which includes Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Fardeen Khan have worn shades.
What's more is that almost all the backdrop dancers and the crowds in the carnival-feel song are wearing sunglasses - except for Mugdha!
Sticking out The song was shot on a beach in Goa. The promos of the song are currently on air, and even after just a cursory look, the Fashion actress's face sticks out among the sea of bespectacled faces. It is believed that Mugdha stepped out of her van without any eye protection. She however maintains, "I thought I'd flaunt my beautiful eyes so I did not wear any glares."
First such shoot But a unit source informs, "The day the song was shot on a Goa beach, it happened to be Mugdha's first day on the sets of All The Best. After Fashion, she had shot for Jail, both Madhur Bhandarkar's films so there was an air of familiarity. But on the sets of All The Best it was the first time that she was shooting with so many big B-Town names together."
Like being at sea The source adds, "There was a bit of unfamiliarity with the rest of the cast. It was like her being at sea as the rest of the stars were doing their own stuff! So when she arrived on the sets, she just went on with the shoot without taking into consideration that the shot would gel well with glares. Now that the song is out, it has her face stick out among the rest and her eyes battling with a big dose of infra-red rays."
Salman Khan, the handsome hunk of bollywood who plays lead in upcoming Rs 75 crore budget flick.
London Dreams’ opposite sizzling hot sexy babe Asin, is at war with his leading lady, who hardly attends discussions about promotion of the film with director Vipul Shah.
Sources close to production house say that Asin is furious with Salman Khan and never attends discussions about promotion of the flick.
In his presence and sends her father Joseph Thottukmal instead. However. As Asin plays a pivotal role in the flick, director Vipul Shah makes.
It a point to keep her informed about the developments, and she, too, does not object to attending meetings with Vipul Shah, after Salman Khan has already left the place.
Asin does not have any problem with Ajay Devgan, who plays equally pivotal role in the flick. Sources close to southern sensation Asin say that the main reason for her being upset with Salman Khan is her blink and miss appearance in the first promos of the flick, which were released some days ago. The first promos had sidelined Asin and focused on only Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, and this infuriated the lady.
The buzz is that Asin believes all this was done at the instance of Salman Khan, and hence she avoids his presence at the promotional discussion with director Vipul Shah. In fact, sources close to Asin say that Vipul Shah was forced by Salman Khan to sideline her in the promos of ‘London Dreams’, and this was obviously disliked by the gorgeous babe.
The grapevine has it that initially Asin was ecstatic at getting the opportunity of working with bollywood biggies like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in her very second film, after debuting opposite Aamir Khan in ‘Gjajini’. But now this same fact, of ‘London Dreams’ being her second film, is troubling her. In fact, she had expected to gain huge publicity with this film, which could have helped her bollywood career, but nothing of the sort is happening.
This Salman Khan-Asin war has also created problems for director Vipul Shah who can not afford to antagonize either of the two stars. Though he bowed to Salman Khan’s pressure in sidelining Asin from promos, but he made sure to explain that sidelining as just one off affair, with the promise that all future promotional material would give Asin equal importance.
It may be recalled that Salman Khan had a very good relation with Asin in the initial stages and it is said that it was his recommendation that got her ‘London Dreams’ after Aamir’s ‘Ghajini’. Even during the shooting of the film in London, Paris and Punjab, Salman and Asin had excellent working chemistry.
However, this all changed when Salman had his way in dominating the promotional aspect of the flick, which resulted in sidelining of Asin from the promos. ‘London Dreams’ revolves around two friends played by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, who wants to do something big in London’s musical landscape. The movie is all about their struggles to realize their dreams in that firang city.
... Sultry Sameera Reddy and Naqaab girl Urvashi Sharma are doing item numbers in Priyadarshan’s untitled next, starring Ajay Devgan, Akshaye Khanna and Bipasha Basu.
A source from the unit informs, “Sameera Reddy has already shot a rustic item song composed by Preetam and has worn a lovely ghaghra choli for it. Sameera, who romanced with Paresh Rawal in One Two Three, will be seen shaking a leg with the veteran actor once again in the folk song-inspired ‘Tere ishq se meetha kuch nahi’ which has a ‘Beedi jalayi le’ feel to it.”
About the song, Urvashi said, “It’s a great song but I can’t reveal more about it.” Our source informs that Urvashi’s song will be picturised on a bride’s mehndi ceremony. When asked what prompted her to do the item number in the film, Urvashi said, “That it is a Priyadarshan film is good enough reason to do it. Priyadarshan is an amazing filmmaker. He loved my performance in my item song in Baabarr, and offered me the song.”
Ajay Devgn sings?
Ajay Devgn — yes, that’s how he spells his surname now — is known for his performance-oriented roles in Zakhm and Company. Of late, he wants to do something hatke. In London Dreams, he is a performer whose ambition is to sing to a full house at the Wembley Stadium, while in All The Best he is rumoured to play a singer. Ajay singing well? If you remember him murdering ‘Chingari koi bhadke’ in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that seems like a dream come true. . ...
When Ajay Devgan first heard he had to whip himself in London Dreams, he couldn't believe his ears. Once he accepted this startling form of self-protest considering it was essential to the plot, Ajay went all out and flogged himself black and blue for continuous 8 hours.
Says Vipul, "We had a detailed discussion. Audience could easily end up laughing at what is meant to be a moment of extreme self-loathing. Ajay was very concerned about the way he would look whipping himself on screen. I assured him that we'd shoot the sequence in a way that would look nothing less than stunning."
It's a sequence where an impulsive emotional character punishes himself. Says Vipul, "It is sequence of repentance. But it is not religious. I saw self-flagellation as a perfectly-defining moment for the character. It's not done with a whip. It's done with a belt, that Ajay hit himself powerfully with. Once or twice I called out 'cut', but Ajay didn't want to go for a cut. He didn't want to go through the experience in pieces. It was that harrowing for him."
Vipul continues, "And that too for a shot which would last no more than 25 seconds on screen. I'd tell him that we should stop. But Ajay insisted on doing it non-stop. We didn't want the aesthetics to be lost. I've never taken longer on any sequence."
Explaining the act Vipul says, "It's not a very macho thing to do. And it certainly goes against the image of an action hero as well as a comic hero. Quite naturally, Ajay was zapped when he heard that he was to do a sequence which requires him to whip his own self as an act of punishment." Self-flagellation is a very Islamic concept. But Ajay doesn't play a Muslim character in London Dreams. "I'd be very alarmed if people see it in a religious light. It'd just show we're cynical about religion. I just wanted to show a completely incredible expression of the character's intensity. Ajay plays a very intense and emotional character that shocks people with his extreme behaviour. I want to shock the audience. Ajay's character is one on the edge. I had to show that edginess. And considering its Ajay Devgan, audience will be doubly shocked. Ajay is such a chilled out, in control person. People don't expect him punish himself on screen. But I'd rather let the character define its actions than the actor ands his image."
Ajay in fact expressed the same reservations. No protagonist has been shown violating himself so brutally.
Does Vipul expect censor trouble? "I expect trouble from the censors any time."
Right before we see Ajay Devgan whipping himself on October 30, we get Devgan whipping up some laughs in All The Best.
Says Vipul, "In a span of two weeks, audiences will see Ajay in two drastically different roles. If London Dreams was funny, I'd be nervous. Mine is a completely different film from All The Best. London Dreams is my most intense film till date. And if Ajay is the only leading man to whip himself, I'd say he has guts."
By Ruchika Kher Film: “All The Best”; Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty; Lyricist: Kumaar; Singers: Rana Mazumder, Soham Chakraborthy, Antara Choudhary, KK, Yashita, Clinton Cerejo, Suraj Jaggan, Rupam Islam, Kunal Ganjawala, Neeraj Shridhar, Alisha Chinoi and Megha Sriram; Rating: ***
The songs of Ajay Devgan’s “All The Best” have all the qualities to become chartbusters. Pritam Chakraborty has churned out racy and power-packed songs as well as slow, melodious numbers.
The album has five originals and two remixes.
The title track “All the best”, which is crooned by Rana Mazumdar, Soham Chakraborthy and Antara Choudhary, is an energetic number with the sounds of the electric guitar as the prelude. The high-octave, foot-tapping track generates much interest and is a fun song.
Next is “Dil kare”, which is equally power-packed. The heavy duty rock track is dominated by drum beats. Sung by Suraj Jaggan and Rupam Islam, it is high on contemporary sounds and will surely be liked by many, especially the youngsters.
The number also has a remixed version with more added beats.
Up next is romantic number “Haan main jitni martaba”, which is a really nice song. The high-pitched number has KK behind the microphone and he’s done an exceptional job. Supporting him is Yashita. The use of the electric guitar adds zing to the song. It’s surely worth a listen.
This track also has a remixed version. But the original is much better.
Then we have “Kyon”, which is undoubtedly the best song in the album. Sung wonderfully by Clinton Cerejo, it is a melodious, poignant number that instantly strikes a chord with the audiences. The song will definitely be liked by all for its purity and softness. The strumming of the guitar is the main musical backing in the song.
And finally there is “You are my love”, another peppy track by Kunal Ganjawala, Neeraj Shridhar, Alisha Chinoi and Megha Sriram. It’s more like a carnival song but doesn’t impress as much as other numbers in the soundtrack.
On the whole, there’s a lot to look forward to in the music of “All The Best”. Pritam has done a great job and so has lyricist Kumaar.

The friendship between Ajay Devgan and Asin is getting stronger with each passing day. The two discuss everything from new film offers to Asin’s shopping list
Yesterday, in an interview Asin told us that her relationship with Ghajini co-star Aamir Khan is purely professional and that they are not in touch after the film’s release. However, she seemed to have no trouble in becoming close to her London Dreams co-star Ajay Devgan both on and off the sets. The shoot of London Dreams is over but Asin and Ajay’s friendship is nowhere close to the finishing line. Industry buzz is that Ajay has become Asin’s trusted advisor these days and Asin is only too happy to have him as her friend.
A source says, “Asin banks on Ajay’s advice for several things. Be it her shopping list or even something as serious as her career moves, Asin and Ajay discuss it all. The camaraderie between the two is getting stronger day by day.”
Talking about her newfound equation with Ajay, Asin says, “Ajay is a terrific human being and has been extremely supportive. It feels great to receive so much warmth and support from someone. He is a great actor and I admire his fun-loving nature.”
After befriending Sridevi and now Ajay, Asin sure knows how to make the right moves in the industry, both professionally and personally.
Now it can be told. Ajay has set up a makeshift gym in far-off Karaikudi for more than just recreation. For his role in Priyadarshan’s hard-hitting tale of honour killing in Bihar Ajay Devgan needs to have a specially toned-up physique.
Priyan tells us why. “I’ve turned the horrific tale of an actual incident in Bihar of an inter-caste romance into a full-on actioner. See, I wanted to keep it real. At the same time I wanted to make it riveting for the audience. So while shooting on an authentic location (Karaikudi is like a small town in Bihar) I’ve made my two heroes Ajay and Akshaye Khanna into full-on action heroes. This film has the kind of real stunts never seen in Hindi cinema.” Priyan has roped in his old action director B Thyagarajan and a stunt director from South Africa , Frances to devise action scenes which would take the director’s Bihari drama into the region of riveting realism.
Says Priyan, “When I say real action I mean fight scenes that are the opposite of cable-wired flips somersaults, jumps and leaps. This time Ajay has gone as raw as it can get.” The action sequences have both Devgan and Khanna locked in hand-to-hand combats, and other very basic forms of physical aggression that went out of vogue with the old Kung Fu films.
For this Devgan needed to get into a different shape. And so did Akshaye. In fact, Akshaye is a new convert to the gym . Till this schedule in Karaikudi started. And Ajay persuaded Akshaye to head for the gym.
“Yes, we’ve a set up a terrific gym in this wilderness. It’s been set up in an under-construction building. It has all the equipment,” says Bipasha. “We all work out in it. Ajay and I, of course. Paresh Rawal also works out. Akshaye Khanna only used to play squash for exercise. Now he’s started going to the gym. They need to get into a specific shape for this film.”
Before producer Arbaaz Khan can shift Bihar to Vai near Mumbai for the shooting of Abhinav Kashyap’s Dabangg, Priyadrashan has relocated a village of Bihar in Karaikudi, a Tamilian small-town 80 kilometers away from Madurai to shoot for his very real headline-derived intercaste love story that shook rural Bihar some time ago.
Doesn’t the film take Priyan into a space completely different from his award winning Kanchivaram? “Not at all. That was a different kind of reality. This is different,” says Priyan.
Asin has asked her producer Vipul Shah to kick off the promotions of her second film, London Dreams, with her. The actress, who made her debut last year with Ghajini, was kept under wraps till the last leg of the film's publicity and she felt she suffered due to that. She doesn't want to repeat the experience.
In Ghajini, she was debuting, therefore unimportant in the scheme of things. The film had Aamir Khan, who is available to the media only around the release of his films, so they made the most of it.
Special request London Dreams stars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. Asin is being extra cautious this time. She made a special request to her London Dreams director Vipul Shah to let her start the film's promotion ahead of the her co-stars."
Vipul says, "We have worked out on our entire campaign. Normally, it is the male leads who start the promotion of the film but we've decided to use the female lead and bring in some Lady Luck. This is her second film in Bollywood and people are anticipating a lot from her. So it was a great idea to start the campaign with her."
I'm available He disagrees that it was Asin's idea to set the ball rolling with her, "She didn't make any such conditions or request. She said it was her second film after Ghajini and that she hadn't signed any other film. She has given her 100 per cent and also wanted the movie to be promoted well from her side. During the shooting of the film itself, she had spoken about the promotion aspect and how she will be available as and when required."
When asked if she'd get sidelined with two big male stars in the films, he says, "Apart from friendship, it is also a love triangle. There are many layers to the movie; a love triangle being one of the most important ones, where Asin comes in the picture."
