Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan making his directorial debut with U, Me aur Hum, scheduled to release later this month, says his maiden project brings out the positivity of relationship between a husband and wife.
Ajay who is paired opposite his actress wife of nine years Kajol in the film said it was a simple love story about a man who marries a girl he loves and overcomes all hurdles to maintain the relationship.
"The film doesn't give a sermon on relationships. The audiences will identify with the characters. What is different in the subject is that the film looks at the institution of marriage in a positive way," the actor said.
"A lot of people question the institution of marriage, or blame it when problems arise. I feel that in a marriage, or any relationship for that matter, problems are inevitable.
"Giving up should be our last option. However, an increasing number of people just prefer to give up at the first sign of trouble," Devgan said.
The actor who began his career with action packed roles, said he felt that relationships, especially marriages need to be nurtured with love, sensitivity and understanding.
"People keep asking me what inspired me to chose this subject and direct a film. To be honest, this is a story straight from my heart. A story which I strongly believed in," he told reporters here last night.
Ajay also affirms to the concepts like love at first sight, happy marriages and soulmates.
"I know that they exist and hence they are important elements of my film," the actor added.
The actor said he was aware that he cannot change the way people think or live their lives through his film. "A film is meant to entertain you and give your money's worth. Besides entertaining the audience, if the film makes them introspect on the state of their relationships or encourages them to improve it, my success will be much greater," he said.
When asked about his experiences off-screen, Ajay said he was well versed with the nuances of filmmaking as he had assisted Shekhar Kapur before joining films and even helped father Veeru Devgan, veteran action director in editing.
"I believe that if your vision as a director is clear and are backed by an efficient crew, there will be no hurdles," he said. Speaking about his wife, Ajay said he was fortunate enough to direct a film with a powerful and efficient actress like Kajol.
"She is always thorough with the nitty-gritties of her character before she begins shooting. In this film, she is not only the lead actress but also the producer. Since the screenplay work happened at home, Kajol was present for all the sittings and even gave her inputs.
"She made my work as a director much easier," Ajay signs off.
Keeping his fingers crossed ahead of the release of his directorial debut 'U, Me aur Hum', Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan says he is going to continue directing good entertaining movies whether the film clicks or not at the box office.
Devgan says that for him it was not a major shift from acting to direction as he believes that he is a born director and has that fire within him.
"I started my career directing small budget films, so it was not a major change. In my early days, apart from acting in movies, I tried my hand in production, direction, music composing and all," Devgan says.
"I assisted my father in his directorial ventures several times and both of us knew that I have the flame in me to develop an idea and give it a shape. But then, I became an actor and didn't get the time to direct."
Devgan is very positive about the success of his first directorial attempt. He believes he has done justice with the script and has come out with a entertaining story.
"I will continue with direction as it is my favourite hobby or you can say a passion. I will not make a movie only for the sake of it, but will do it only when a right script will come my way," says the actor, who has won two national awards for best actor for his role in "Zakhm", and "Legend of Bhagat Singh".
But that does not mean curtains down for him as an actor as Devgan says his acting career will continue side-by-side.
Though a veteran in Bollywood, Devgan hopes that the film, in which his wife Kajol co-stars him, will be an entertainer.
"We all in the team have put our heart out in making this film. It is very close to my heart," he says.
He was all praise for wife Kajol when asked about the experience directing her.
"Kajol is a wonderful actress to work with and I couldn't have imagined any other actress playing her role," he says.
"She managed such a difficult character with ease that she made it look very simple. I am not saying this as a husband, but from the point of view of director," says Devgan, who has won much critical acclaim for playing intense roles in films like "Omkara", "Raincoat", "Apaharan" and "Yuva".
"U, Me aur Hum" is all about relationship, about love, commitments and life. You will find every thing in this movie, which is close to my heart. I want cine lovers to feel nice and romantic when they come out of the theatres, he says.

New Delhi, April 06: Kajol is a director`s delight, says Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan of his talented wife whom he has cast in his directorial debut `U, Me Aur Hum`.
`Very few actresses can perform like her. Doesn`t every director want to work with Kajol?` Ajay told reporters.
`Working with her is a delight. When a writer writes his book, he uses words to express himself and when a director makes a film, actors like her help convey the message rightly,` added Devgan, who was in the capital Saturday to promote his upcoming film.
The actor denies he would only select Kajol for his future projects.
`Taking her in my first film doesn`t mean that I would only work with her. Casting depends on who suits the role most, and for this character she fitted the bill.`
Apart from Ajay and Kajol, the movie also stars Divya Dutta, Karan Khanna, Isha Sharvani and Sumeet Raghavan. It narrates the story of three couples and how the successful marriage of one couple helps mend another`s relationship and how the third is urged to tie the knot.
`I have not tried to make a pseudo intellectual film, instead a commercial one. `U, Me Aur Hum` is about love, life and relationships. The aim is that people must come out of the theatre with a smile and feel good,` the national award winner said.
Ajay believes directing a film and acting in it is not difficult.
`Doing two things at a time requires a lot of hard work but once you are clear about what you want to do it is not that difficult.
`Moreover, direction wasn`t a big change for me. I started my career as a director. I used to make small films and would do everything except acting in them. I always wanted to direct a full-length film,` he said.
`It all started with a thought that gradually took shape. Only when a second thought comes along will I roll out my next film.`
Commenting on whether his role in the film is a reflection of his personal life, he said: `No, there are no similarities.`
`For instance, in the film the character falls in love at first sight but nothing like this has ever happened to me in real life. However, I believe in what the character believes in.`

Ajay and Kajol Devgan return to the big screen together after a long gap of eight years with U Me Aur Hum. In a candid interview with CNN-IBN's Sushant Mehta the couple discuss Kajol's temper, Ajay's dance movies and parenting.
Sushant Mehta: Ajay and Kajol Devgan , well what can I say about them they are brilliant actors and mega stars Ajay tell me how was it directing your wife, I've heard she has a little bit of a temper?
Ajay Devgan: Well I don't think she has a temper at all.
Kajol: Well, I do think I have a little bit of a temper, but I think I am more impatient.
Ajay Devgan: She is very easy to direct, as she understands what the director want. One doesn't need to work a lot on her, but only needs to guide her right.
Kajol: He's very easy as a director, in the sense that he gave me all the space and freedom to do what I wanted.
Ajay Devgan: She was very involved with the project and she didn't say anything, may be because she is also the producer of the film.
Kajol: Well it was an absolute delight.
Sushant Mehta: Ajay not known for his dance moves, and they've made him dance to salsa in the film.
Kajol: Not they, he himself danced to the salsa , since he is the director of the film.
Ajay Devgan: Well I was the director, so I only approved the steps that I would be comfortable with.
Kajol: And I knew whatever I do I'll be better than him.
Ajay Devgan: But I think I've managed pretty well.
Kajol: Eventually when we shot the song he was better at it than me.
Sushant Mehta: Also about parenting, you have a daughter so who's fan is she, mummy's or dady's?
Kajol: I don't think she is a fan, as she doesn't watch any of our movies.
Ajay Devgan: Well, she only five, so we don't encourage her watching too many movies as she gets upset if she sees I'm hurt or crying in a film. She's more addicted to cartoons.
Ajay Devgan talks about directing Kajol in U Me Aur Hum
What made you take to direction when you were at the peak of your acting career? It's true that I was busy with my acting career but I always wanted to do something different. When I got this idea (about the film) I started working on it and narrated it to Robinda (Robin Bhatt). We all shaped it up and decided to make this film and that's when I decided that I will direct it too. It was not an impulsive decision.
Your decision to turn director many people … I had this idea about three years ago, and when I actually started working on it, I started getting calls from a lot of people but I kept denying it. I announced it only after I was completely ready.
Who thought of the title, U Me Aur Hum? This was Kajol's idea. The film was earlier titled Tum, Main Aur Hum but then Robinda changed it to U Me Aur Hum. The film has everything in it, music, emotions and comedy. I am confident that it will do well.
Was Kajol the obvious choice? When I narrated the script to Kajol, she got very excited and immediately told me that she wanted to do it. I was more than happy as there is no one better than Kajol. I sincerely believe that it's her best role so far and it is her best performance till date. Even though she is the producer of the film, she didn't have a chance to give creative inputs (Laughs).
You have an image of an action image but there is no action in U Me Aur Hum… I have followed the script. There was no action in Golmaal but it worked. There was no action in Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam. I believe that if you make a good film, it will surely work at the box-office.
Now that your film is on the verge of releasing are you feeling the pressure? Where is the time to be nervous? My work just got over yesterday. I may start feeling the pressure from tomorrow.
Have you signed London Dreams? Yes I have, as both the characters, including Salman's, are very good. I had issues with the earlier producer but after Vipul took over, he asked me if I would do it, and I immediately agreed.
The buzz is that you and Rajkumar Santoshi are no longer friends Not true. We have no problems. He still has my dates, but if I've not met him it's because I have been busy with my film. But I don't know what he wants to make next, Ramayan or Asoka.
Are you playing the modern day Karna in Prakash Jha's Rajniti … Yes, I am playing the modern day Karna in Rajniti. Prakash Jha has a fantastic script and it is an exciting character. He has woven the basic premise of Mahabharata in modern day politics very deftly.
After Amir Khan, it is Ajay Devgun's turn to prove his directorial talent and versatility. It's been a long journey from being action hero in films like Jigar (1992) to comedy in Ishq (1997) to intense drama in a chain of films. Ajay looks his cool self on the eve of the release of his U Me Aur Hum. Let us see what he has to say to TWF correspondent Shoma A Chatterji
Has direction always been a part of your dreams? As a matter of fact, it's a dream come true. To tell you the truth, my training in direction began when I was eight or nine years old. I was part of my father's technical and editorial team when he made films. Then, I happened to assist Shekhar Kapoor quite early in my career long before I made my debut in Phool Aur Kaante happened. I also got familiar with the logistics of production by creating my production banner beginning with Hindustan Ki Kasam in 1999 and Raju Chacha the next year. The fact that they bombed at the box office did not discourage me but made me wiser in choosing my directorial script and film with care so that it does well.
What drove you to direction? I've been an actor for 16 years now and there have been the usual ups and downs with a few big hits, a few smaller ones and some super flops too. It is logical for an actor to extend himself to other areas like direction. To tell his audience a story he believes in. I had this story in my mind for a long time and then one fine morning, I just sat down and wrote it out. As I was developing the storyline into a full-fledged screenplay, I realised that the best way to tell the story was to tell it the way I wanted it to be told and who else could achieve this but me as a director? Of course, I then got other writers to collaborate on the idea and give the screenplay the right shape. After that, it was smooth sailing.
As an actor, you have had your share of action films, dramatic films, contemporary films and historical films. What genre did you choose for your directorial debut? I am not about to give the story away about which genre the film belongs to. I would leave it to my audience to draw its own conclusions. I want people to come out of the theatre with a smile.
You have directed your wife Kajol in this film and also acted opposite her. How was the experience? Working with her has been a wonderful experience. She is a wonderful actress in her own right. But that does not mean that I will cast her in every film I direct. It would depend on whether there is a character for her to portray. When a director makes a film, actors like her help convey the message rightly. I have other good actors too like Divya Dutt, Helen, Karan Khanna, Isha Sharvani and Aditya Singh Rajput in my film. They have all done me proud. It is the story of three couples and how the successful marriage of one couple helps mend another's relationship and how the third is urged to tie the knot. I will continue with direction as it is my favourite hobby or you can say a passion. I will not make a movie only for the sake of it, but will do it only when a right script will come my way.
Was it difficult wearing so many hats at one go – producer, director and hero? Wasn't it too big a responsibility to take? The bigger the responsibility, the greater is the challenge. If you take these things like a challenge, then there are no problems at all.
Was zog Sie zum Regie führen? Danach verlief alles in ruhigen Bahnen.
[Interview by SAVIO ZACHARIA] Wednesday, April 09, 2008
Hi Ajay, It’s your first film as director. What’s running on your mind? Honestly, I’m not nervous at all. I’m just happy that the film is over and everything is ready. The advance response in Delhi and Punjab has been very good.
Tell me about how you arrived at the subject of this film? It’s basically an idea I had. It has been with me been over the past 2-3 years. The whole positivity in the story telling is what excited me.
How does it feel acting and directing at the same time? It’s not all difficult. It just requires a lot of hard work.
How did the thought of direction come in after so many years? I always wanted to be a director. I started off my career as an assistant director to Shekar Kapur before entering as an actor. I was so kicked about direction that I used to even edit at the age of 17.
So what would you like to put across with this film? Basically there isn’t anything in particular. At the end of the movie if a couple sitting next to each other hold hands or a single person things about how much he/she thinks about his/her loved ones; I think I would have achieved something.
Was Kajol always your first choice? And tell us about her growth as an actor with this film? (With a smirk) Actually Kajol left me with no choice at all. The moment she heard the script she was charged about it. As every other actor, Kajol too grows with every film. I think she understands the medium of cinema much better now.(Pauses) See me and Kajol can go on praising each other over and over.
Tell us a little about the salsa sequence and music of the film? Well the salsa sequence wasn’t tough for me. (Chuckles)Being the director I only chose the easy steps. As for the music of the film it has truly been credited to Vishal who really understood the lyrics and got me Munna the right lyricist. If you listen to the songs it’s just apt.
What does the title signify and how did you arrive at it? The title started off with Kajal in Hindi and then Robin Bhatt got the U Me Aur Hum element. The title signifies that two separate individuals with ‘U’ and ‘Me’ come together in their complete uniqueness and diversities and bond to become one-‘Hum’.
The character Ajay in the film has 24 drinks before he actually proposes to the girl, how realistic is that and is it too hard to express oneself? Why not! I have had 50 drinks in one go. Check out my office , here itself you will find ten such bewdaas(drunkards). (Laughs)… Alcohol has just been used in a light manner to add humour in the film.
Did you ever propose to Kajol like that? Actually I never proposed to Kajol. In fact we became such good friends that we never realized how we got here. A lot of people are drawing comparisons to you and Aamir Khan, what’s your take on Taare Zameen Par? I haven’t watched it.
With Krazzy4 also releasing this week are you a little insecure? Films are two separate entities. Today there is lots of space for different films. If both are good, both will work.
You did screen your film to Mr.L.K.Advani , what was his response? Honestly the first half of the film is filled with lots of Humour and is peppy but the second half is what takes a turn as I didn’t want to make either a commercial film or a niche one but rather a commercially niche one. Mr. Advani too was perplexed till the first half but at the end of the film we received a 7 minute standing ovation.
How do you analyze your career so far? I don’t analyze anything. I don’t look behind at the past and after Friday I will soon forget everything about U Me Aur Hum also.
So what’s next for Ajay Devgan? Well I have Toonpur with Kajol then there is Golmaal returns, London dreams and Rajkumar Santoshi’s next.
Is all well between you and Mr.Santoshi? Very much. He has my July-August dates. I have to meet him. There is no problem between us at all.
Was geht in Ihnen vor?
Was möchten Sie durch Ihren Film vermitteln? Eigentlich nichts Spezielles.
Listening to Ajay Devgan for fifteen minutes makes you realise that he is not only the consummate actor, but the perfect movie star as well. He doesn't really namedrop his way through the interview - namedropping isn't the correct term for him because he considers himself as just a normal human being who is simple and down to earth. But it is clear that this is a guy who has seen it all. And what's more, professionally he is on the form of his life, by reinvigorating his acting credentials in his directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum. In an exclusive interview over the phone from a cold and windy day in London, Devansh Patel chats with Ajay Devgan.
What's more of a responsibility, wearing the director's hat, directing your wife, being a husband and a father or producing a meaningful cinema which conveys a strong message? You are forgetting that the intention was also to make a fun film which I have in the first half of the film. As a husband, it wasn't an issue to be working with Kajol because when I was directing her, I wasn't thinking of her as my wife but was thinking of her as a character. Now when we talk about directing, acting and producing yourself, you have to make it very clear in your head that it requires a lot of extra hard work because you need more concentration as you are putting your mind in three things at the same time. But if you are clear in your head, it's not a big issue.
But after seeing the film, don't you think that U, Me Aur Hum is eventually giving a strong message out to the audiences? I have not made this film to give out any message. It's sweet of you to say that but I feel that it is a positive film made with a positive attitude. So I don't think that in my film anybody will feel that I gave a message. They might feel it when they go home. Eventually, it's a story which talks about positivity, love, relationships, etc. It will make you laugh and cry and that was my prime intention.
Has your daughter seen the film? She is too young to see the film and I don't think that she will be able to see us facing problems in the film itself. I am sure that she won't see U, Me Aur Hum.
Why show U, Me Aur Hum to Sushma Swaraj, L.K.Advani, Ravi Shankar Prasad and a few other politicians? Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad is like a family friend. It was his idea that he wanted to show the film to the cabinet ministers. It was his invitation and I was also invited for the show. Yes, it's true that the special screening was the first trial of U, Me Aur Hum and the response was over whelming and we had a standing ovation in the end. That was a great feeling. Mr Advani was a film critic before he became a politician and that adds on to it.
After seeing the film myself, I thought that the Director of Photography (DOP) has done an excellent job. What credit would you like to give to Aseem Bajaj? Aseem has been the DOP in many of my earlier films as an actor like Golmaal, Sunday, etc. It's very important the way you present your characters and light them up. I think the DOP needs to understand the mood of the scene. That's when we tell him that we want such kind of lights. He then goes ahead and puts his inputs. I think it makes a lot of difference in a way as the DOP adds glamour to the film too. Hats off to Aseem Bajaj.
I've heard a lot about one scene in the film which took three hours to shoot. Could you brief us on that? The scene which you are talking about is the shot in which the seagulls are seen flying together. It's the first time that we have used a helicam in our country for that particular shot. I knew a lot about the helicam but you need prior permissions from certain authorities to use it. That's why I had pre planned all the necessary things before getting my hands on to the helicam. What's even more interesting is that the seagulls come out early in the morning only once and we had to wait for three long hours to take the shot. In fact, in such situations, there has to be no room for error.
A very cliched question but have to ask it. Why choose faces like Divya Dutta, Karan Khanna and Sumeet Raghavan for your film? I wanted actors who were not over exposed and I wanted good characters. Friends should look like friends; otherwise what happens is that in our films when a hero has friends, they are side characters who have hardly anything to do in a film. But I've seen to it that friends look like family in U, Me Aur Hum and thus such a diverse choice. I am sure you'll fall in love with each and every friend of mine in the film.
Is U, Me Aur Hum going to be a one off experiment as a director? I had an idea and I decided to direct a film. U, Me Aur Hum's idea touched my heart. There is a possibility that another idea may touch my heart tomorrow or after two years. If that's the case then I'll direct my second film. My intention is not to keep directing. As of now, I am thinking of something. If it really inspires me to do it then I'll go ahead and direct it, but I'm not in a hurry.
It may come to you as a shock but the restaurant scene during the climax left many journalists moist eyed. That's my favourite scene. Which one's your's? You caught me on that one, didn't you? The restaurant scene with my friends was a very important scene and you won't believe it but I started the main thought of U, Me Aur Hum with that scene.
So were there any moments when you had your eyes moist? Lots of time because the script was so close to my heart. When Vishal Bhardwaj came up to me and made me read the slow and painful title song's second verse, it made me cry.
Any message for your fans who are eager to see your first directorial debut tomorrow? I don't want to give any message. I want them to see the film and I want them to feel positivity after the film is over because I'm sure they all will work on their own relationship.
Why did you go for Eros International as the worldwide distributors of U, Me Aur Hum? I share a great rapport with Kishore Lulla and I'm comfortable working with him. He is one the very few people we have in our industry who understands our cinema very well. He also gives due credit to the film and has no sort of interference.
What are you going through right now as we speak? I'm feeling excited to be giving this interview and many more which I have given and will give (laughs). I'm positive and happy by comments given by you and many others who have seen the film. Nobody will turn around and say that U, Me Aur Hum is a bad film. Either it's an average film, a good film or a very good film. I have that much confidence.
Do you really feel that sometimes the greatest journey is the distance between two people? That's your tag line for the film. You're right. I do feel very strong about this particular quote. I don't know who has written it but I thought of incorporating it in my film. Even Kajol's character in the film says, "Kahin padha tha...kissi ne toh likha hoga". But not only this quote, the film also has bold dialogues which stand true every time you think of your relationship with your wife, husband and friends.
Warum zeigten Sie „U, Me Aur Hum“ Sushma Swaraj, L.K.Advani, Ravi Shankar Prasad und einigen anderen Politikern?
In solchen Situationen darf wirklich kein Fehler passieren.
Was geht in Ihnen vor, gerade jetzt während unseres Gesprächs?
Actors are increasingly turning to direction. From Aamir Khan, Rohit Roy to Sushmita Sen, stars now want to make a difference behind the camera. And this Friday, we will see Ajay Devgan make his directorial debut in U Me Aur Hum.
On the eve of the film's release, Devgan talks to Patcy N about U Me Aur Hum, his hot salsa number and even his romance with Kajol.
Are you nervous? No. I'm happy that the film is over and about to release. I'm also happy because the advance booking has gone well. I want U Me Aur Hum to get a good opening because that is half the battle won. I am confident that no one will say that the film is bad. Everyone will like it.
Why did you choose this script? This is an idea I had three years ago. The script touched my heart; the concept was good. I think a film should be entertaining first, and have a message later. The message shouldn't be obvious, but hidden in the film. What I really wanted is that a couple watching this film should draw nearer and hold hands by the end of the film. Or if someone is watching it alone, he should miss his partner so much that he calls her up immediately.
Was acting and directing together difficult? No, it isn't difficult if you are clear in your head. But yes, you need to put in a lot of effort and concentration.
In her interviews, Kajol said you were a very good director. I may praise Kajol and Kajol may praise me, and in the end, we'll go on praising each other. It's best if we don't say anything. We can be biased towards each other. Watch the film, and decide for yourself. But many people have told me that I'm a good director.
Kajol also said that you wanted to be a director since childhood. Yes. In fact, I started as an assistant director, and I assisted Shekhar Kapur. As a child, I would make video films. I would go with my father [action director Veeru Devgan] for shoots. I started editing when I was 11 or 12. I was more inclined towards direction than acting. But my father wanted me to become an actor. Direction was my passion and it came to me naturally.
So how much have you changed since your video film days? With age, you understand things better. At that time, I was good at technology, and I would make trolleys and cranes with my own hands. I would take such difficult shots that people would be shocked and amazed as to how I managed them. But today, while making U Me Aur Hum, my entire concentration was on storytelling and what techniques I should use with specific scenes. Now, technology has become secondary and storytelling is the primary focus.
Were you inspired by any director? No. Every director has his own style. Filmmaking is about storytelling and everyone has a different style. I have tried to bring on screen whatever was on paper. When you convert what's on paper to screen, there is always some loss because it's very difficult to film exactly what's on your mind. But I think we're very close to the script.
What do you feel about directing Kajol? She is a great actress. This is the most difficult character she has ever played, and she's done it beautifully.
Was she your first choice? She didn't give me a choice. When I got this idea, and narrated it to her, she told me that she wanted to do it. So she was a part of the film before I even planned it. But even otherwise, Kajol would be every director's first choice. Apart from acting, Kajol handled the film's production too.
What does U Me Aur Hum mean? It means that when you fall in love, you like the person for what he or she is. But once you fall in love, you try to change him/her. And we should not do that.
Everyone is talking about your sizzling salsa number. There was not too much of dancing. I fooled everyone, as I was the director. I told everyone I practiced a lot but would take the easiest steps for myself and let others do the tougher steps!
Tell us about the special screening you held for Bharatiya Janata Party leader L K Advani. Former Information and Broadcast Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad is a close friend of mine. He wanted to watch the film so he organised a screening for Advaniji and us. Honestly, I was very scared, as I have made an entertaining film with a lot of hassi mazak before I make my point. I wondered whether they would like it or not because all these seniors are probably used to watching only serious films. But when the film got over, we received a standing ovation for over seven minutes!
How much of your personal life is in the film? U Me Aur Hum has nothing to do with our personal life. We did not even propose to each other! We were friends and don't know when we fell in love.
Will we see you directing more often? No, nothing like that. I liked this script so much that I thought of directing it. I don't know when I will get a story like this again. After U Me Aur Hum, I am committed to three-four films.
You have known for your brooding roles. This romantic film seems to be different. I don't have a screen image any more. I've done successful comedies like Golmaal and Sunday as well as serious films. I'm not typecast, so I'm happy with that.
You have not done action movies since a long time. I want to do an action film if I get a good script.
What next? I have finished shooting for Golmaal Returns. It will release in August or September. Then, I will start shooting for London Dreams. I have a Raj Kumar Santoshi film at hand as well. And let me clarify that there is no problem between us. I will start shooting for his film in July. Then, there is Toonpur, which has two actors -- Kajol and me -- and the rest are all animated characters.
Was bedeutet „U, Me Aur Hum“?
Was kommt als Nächstes?

Ajay Devgan is all set to release his directorial debut film U, Me Aur Hum. He is confident and content when we met him at his office. He is undoubtedly one of the best actors of Bollywood. Though it’s his first film as a director, there’s no nervousness rather he is more confident and excited. Ajay Devgan spoke to Indiatimes Movies about his directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum and his sweetheart Kajol.
U, Me Aur Hum is ready and set to release this week. This is you first film a director. Are you nervous? I am not very nervous. I am happy that film is over and releasing soon. I have got a very good response of advance booking so I am happy today. I am confident that people will not say that it’s a bad movie. But how people will like it, depends on every individual.
How did you select the story? You had mentioned that there was a kind of positivity in the script. Yes and it was something that touched my heart.
What exactly in the story touched to your heart? The whole positivity of the story touched my heart. And the bottom line of any film is to entertain people. In that process of story telling if you have managed to give your message, I feel half the job is done. Here I am talking about love and life, so if a couple come to watch this film and at the end of the movie they feel close to each other or if someone watches alone and at the end, he starts missing his partner then I am successful as a director.
Acting and directing is rather a difficult job. How did you manage it? It’s not very difficult if you are clear in your thoughts. I was completely clear about things that I wanted in my film. Yes there’s lot of effort and concentration required when you are directing a film but it’s not difficult.
After being an actor for many years, what made you to don the director’s hat? It wasn’t planned but it was a thought which inspired me to make this movie. Therefore I didn’t think that is right or wrong time to direct a movie. I just followed my heart.
Now after completing a movie, how do you see yourself as a filmmaker? I think filmmaking is about story telling. It’s on a director how honestly he expresses his thoughts through his film. My effort was to create everything that was written on the paper because I don’t think there’s any director who can manage to show exactly according to his script. But I think if you come little close to that then you are quite successful in expressing your idea or thoughts to your audience
You have done six films with Kajol how do you think she has evolved as an actress? She is undoubtedly a great actress. She has certainly grown as an actress. She understands cinema much better. In this film she has the most difficult character in the film. In fact I feel this is the most difficult character she has ever played in her career. She has done it so beautifully.
Was she your first choice? Well she didn’t give me any other choice because when I narrated this idea she said. “I want to do it.” Before the start of this film she was already there in the film. And obviously Kajol wound be any director’s first choice.
How will you define her character off screen? She handles production and finances. She takes care of overall looking of things.
There’s lot of buzz about your salsa dance. Tell us about it. There’s not much dancing in the film. I am the director and I managed to fool everyone that I have done lot of practice but I did all the easy movements.
You used to assist directors before becoming an actor so that time there was no plans to become a director? No nothing as such because my father wanted me to be an actor. I said I don’t mind being an actor, but I was more inclined to the other side of the camera. Filmmaking was like passion for me so that came to me very easily.
How do you see your growth from an actor to a director? I think that point of time I was more confident because I was doing things which others can’t. I used to my take the kind of shot which used to shock others because they couldn’t do it. But now my concentration is different. My focus is on story telling. See that’s growth. That time I used to think I should give the best scene but now I think how I take that best scene to express my story.
You have worked with the finest directors of the industry. Did you get any inputs form them? I think everyone is different from the other. They all have their different forte. Rajkumar Santoshi is a very good actor and director. Bhatt saab is not a great actor but he can tell you exactly what he wants. I feel after working with directors like this I have definitely learned few things from them.

Chirpy Kajol and the ever-so-aloof Ajay Devgan get talking about their ambitious home production U Me Aur Hum
Your dream of directing a film has finally come true. But as U Me Aur Hum is to hit the screens, is the debutant director feeling the jitters? Ajay: Actually I am feeling great. The dream that I had harboured for years is finally materialising. As U Me ... releases this week, I feel relaxed. I know I have made a very good film, aesthetically as well as visually. The credit for all this also goes to my entire team who believed in me.
Wasn’t it tough sailing in three boats; acting, producing and directing the film? Ajay: It was hard work and extra effort playing three roles simultaneously but I enjoyed the entire process. This time the responsibilities were far beyond just being an actor. I had to keep in mind so many factors. Also the fact that I was clear about what I wanted, helped.
How was it directing a brilliant actor like Kajol? Ajay: Kajol is always a delight to work with. She always delivers more than what the director expects out of her. I have always been very comfortable acting with her and now it was a great pleasure directing her. In fact, Kajol is the best thing to happen to U Me Aur Hum.
Why did you take so long to do a film together, Kajol? Kajol: I have always done selective films. I was waiting for something sensational to feature with Ajay.
What did you think of Ajay when he was on the sets of U Me ... in the role of a leader considering you have worked with the best of the directors? Kajol: I found him too focussed in his work. I was also amazed at his ability to give his 100 per cent as an actor, producer as well as the director. Ajay is simply superb and has performed three times better than what I had expected of him. In U Me ..., he is very good as the actor and brilliant as the director. He has struck the right balance in all his roles. It doesn’t seem like this is his first attempt at wielding the megaphone. While on the sets, his concentration level was amazing. Even as he was enacting a scene, the director in him would have his eyes and ears open to what was happening around him. I want him to do well. It is a genuine feeling of a co-worker and one who has seen him spend sleepless nights over the film. Ajay: I have not tried to prove a point and yet I have tried to convey certain things in my own way. I have done my work and now it is for the audience to judge.
Were you the first choice for the leading lady in this film? Knowing that you are very selective, what made you take it up? Kajol: I loved the story and when Ajay decided to direct it, I was not backing out at all since I believed in him and his conviction. It has been his dream to direct a film since a long time and finally it was happening. I had to be by his side in his endeavour. As for being the leading lady, I guess Ajay had decided that I was to pair opposite him. For me, it was the thrill of being directed by my husband. Now I am in awe of him as the director.
Are you two happy with the outcome of the film? Kajol: We are happy with what we have done. It has shaped up very well. It has been a satisfying experience for both of us.
You had to work on your look for the character. Kajol: Ajay was very particular about the look of the characters and personally looked into the matter. I had to streak my hair, work on my body language and wear western clothes. As for acting, I have always gone out of my way for every film and given my 100 per cent.
Did you identify with your characters in the film? Kajol: Pia was not a very difficult character to play. She is just a normal girl, with a sense of humour, yet she is very vulnerable. She is a waitress on the cruise. As for identifying with her, every character that I have played till date has had a little part of me in it. Pia was no different. I jelled well with her very well. (laughs). Ajay: My character, also named Ajay, is more or less like me. He is outgoing and open and there is a lot of positivity in him. He believes in love at first sight and that love can do wonders to one’s life and how things turn against him is what U Me ... is all about.
So do you believe in love at first sight? Ajay: It is a beautiful feeling though it has not happened to me. It is a good thing to happen to mankind, I must say. Kajol: Yes, it is beautiful.
It is for the first time that a film has been shot extensively on a cruise liner. What was the experience like? Kajol: It was a totally new experience. It was fun and hard work rolled into one. We also had troubled times as it was difficult to shoot between 11 am to 3 pm because of the hot sun. So we tried completing indoor scenes at that time. There were times when we had to shoot in twilight. We were amazed to see the sun rise so fast and set even faster. As if these hindrances were not enough, there were about 500 people besides our crew on board. But they were all very helpful and would abide by our rules when we were shooting. Ajay: That’s right. It is not an easy task to have a 400-member crew aboard a ship, and adding to that weather conditions were not favourable. But since I had a well-planned schedule, there were no catastrophes. I enjoyed the experience immensely and can vouch for the others too. Even the ultimate result is stupendous.
And it is also the first time that a flying cam was being used for an Indian film? Ajay: I am glad to have brought the concept of a flying camera to our country. It was the demand of the script and was used to enhance the scene visually. To put it in a simpler way, in this technique a camera is fitted on a helicopter and scenes can be captured at any given degree upto 360 degrees.
Besides this, was there anything unforgettable? Kajol: During the picturisation of the song Jee le, Ajay was hit badly as one of the salsa dancers swirled around and his leg made contact with Ajay’s face. But the sporting director took it in his stride and the shooting continued unaffected. Ajay: It was unintentional.
Doing this film must have been a pressure on the two of you as except for Ishq and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha,your films together have not worked at the box- office? Kajol: We have done so many films together and as Ajay says “It has to do with the script.” If you have the right script, nothing can go wrong. Ajay: Dil Kya Kare was a huge success overseas. As for U Me Aur Hum, I await the audience’s judgement.
How was it working with your spouse once again as your lover on screen? Kajol: Once in front of the camera, we are both just actors doing what is expected of us. In any case, both Ajay and I are comfortable in each other’s company. We make a good pair on screen, I believe (laughs).
What role of his did you like him in best ; actor, director, husband or father? Kajol: He is a perfectionist in everything he does. As an actor, he has proved that he is brilliant. As a father, he is amazing. The world doesn’t exist for him when Nysa is around. She has him dancing to her tunes. As a husband, he is the best thing that has happened to me. Now we have to wait and see how he is accepted as a film director.
Lately, you two were seen a lot on TV’s various programmes. And now you are judging a show. Is this a promotion tactic for your film? Kajol: Actually we were getting a lot of offers to make appearances on TV but both of us were not very convinced. Since we were neither after fame or money, we were not keen to do anything just like that. But when we were offered Rock N Roll Family, both Ajay and I liked the concept mainly since it involved the entire family. For us, family comes first and we will do anything when it comes to family. So when the programme involved three generations, we agreed to be a part of it. I am enjoying the experience as it is fun to see people gelling well and bonding with each other without any inhibitions that the entire world is watching them on TV. Ajay: I enjoy watching people dancing and enjoying themselves. Like Kajol said, we agreed to do it as it involved three generations of a family. This bonding happens only in India.
Are you doing your friend Karan Johar’s film? Kajol: I have not agreed to do it.
What are the other projects up your sleeve? Kajol: I am looking forward to Toonpur Ka Superhero as it will be my first animation film. It is going to be fun, I hope. Ajay and I are featuring in it together again. Ajay: Besides that I have Golmaal Returns and Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s London Dreams.
And what are your expectations from U Me Aur Hum? Kajol: That it is well appreciated. I stand by the film and everything we have done for it. I pray that it does well for Ajay’s sake. Ajay: I have done my best and I hope it is liked.
Aren’t you apprehensive that it is releasing with Rakesh Roshan’s Krazzy4? Lately Filmkraft has not gone wrong at the box-office. Kajol: That should not matter considering both the films are very different. Ajay:True. They are two different genres and thus no comparisons can be made. Anyway may the best film win.
Und was sind Ihre Erwartungen an U, Me Aur Hum?

Ajay is known for his tough image but not many know, this rough and tough action hero is very romantic at heart. Well, that side of his personality will be seen in his directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum in which he romances his real life wife Kajol.
According to him the title was first decided by Kajol who liked it very much. He says, “Its title says it all. When we are in love, we love that person the way he or she is, but when we get that person we try to mould him or her according to our liking. And that should not happen. We should continue to love a person the way he or she is and not the way we want them to be.”
Ajay feels when you like someone it’s quite difficult to propose to that person. Speaking about a scene from the film he says, “There's a dialogue in the film which speaks "24 drinks down and now I can say I love you. I’ll tell u something I had 50 drinks in my life to say that.”
But is it that difficult to say I love you? He laughs “No that’s the intention. Sometimes you like a person and you don’t have guts to go and say but alcohol is something that opens you.”
Did he ever propose to Kajol in the same manner? “No, I never proposed to Kajol. I could never say I love you to her. It's just that we met and became friends and eventually decided to get married some day. But I sincerely feel a man gets the courage to speak when he is drunk."
Ajay and Kajol have done six films together and undoubtedly they are one of the best couples in Bollywood. When asked about on the set chemistry of the couple he says, “It’s very normal, you don’t even feel that you are working with your wife because you are so occupied with your work and here I was directing also, so I was completely occupied. I was thinking about a character and not the person, who was playing that.”
He admits that his daughter Nysa is the most special person in his life. “I want to spend more time with her and I have cut down some work. I think after the birth of your child the perspective of you life changes. You start thinking more about your child than yourself. My every decision is depend on keeping her in mind.”
But as for now, the director is happy basking in the success of his first film.
"Kajol heard the script and immediately agreed to do the film" - Ajay Devgan By Nikhil Ramsubramaniam, April 18, 2008 - 16:44 IST
He made his Bollywood debut doing a daredevil stunt atop two motorbikes in Phool Aur Kaante. Just as people started calling him an action hero he changed guard and gave some sensitive portrayals in films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Zakhm. He is even known to have a great comic timing and has shown his funny side in films like Masti and Golmaal. Now he has done something which he has wanted to do since a long time. Yes, the talented actor, Ajay Devgan, turned director with U Me Aur Hum. The film has opened to a good response and most people have been unanimous in their praise for his directorial abilities. Bollywood Hungama caught up with the actor tuned director at his Juhu office and by the looks of it, he seemed extremely relaxed and confident about his maiden project. Here's Ajay talking about his journey and experiences during the making of U Me Aur Hum.
Your second baby (after Nysa) U Me Aur Hum was delivered last week? How does it feel? (laughs) No, there is no comparison because Nysa is Nysa and I don't think I can compare her with anything in the world.
So is it you who went through the labour pains this time around? Ya. Right now the labour pains are on because there were a lot of things to be done before the release but I think its fine (smiles)
When did you decide to take the plunge into direction? Was it a gradual decision or a spur of the moment thought? It was never a decision….it was a thought, an idea which I had in my mind, and I started working on it. It shaped up so beautifully that I decided to make it myself. I had always been on the other side of the camera before I became an actor but I never really planned when I would direct my first film
Whom did you first convey your decision to direct? Kajol (smiles). She heard the script and loved it and she immediately said I want to do the film.
Were you and Kajol the only (original) choices to star in the film or did some other names even cross your mind? No other choices because Kajol immediately agreed to do the film before I even planned the film.
How easy or difficult was it directing Kajol in your very first film? I think it was very easy. When you have an actor like Kajol, it's a director's delight; you can push the scene as much as you like knowing fully well that you have an actress who can deliver.
You are not someone who is immediately associated with romantic, mushy films. Why did you decide to choose this genre for your directorial debut? It was the thought, the idea which inspired me… I didn't think about the genre.
Is U Me Aur Hum your way of defining what love and relationships is all about? (Thinks) It can never be anybody's way. I think it is the right way of defining it making it a little more surreal and beautiful because that's what is required in today's world. So, I think it is the right way but I won't say it is my way.
You have been quoted saying that this was one story which you felt; you had to tell the world? Why so? Because it's very positive. It talks very positively about love, relationships, problems and how you can tackle it and still be happy in life. I thought in today's world where things are turning negative its better to tell a tale which is very positive.
Are there elements from you real life love story which you have incorporated in U, Me Aur Hum No …Not at all.
The buzz doing the rounds is U Me Aur Hum is inspired from The Notebook and Iris…Are there any similarities? I think I'll only answer this question to those who have seen both the films and my film… After seeing the 3 films if he / she still wants to ask me this question…I'll answer it (smiles)
Describe your first day and last day as a director on the sets of U Me Aur Hum. The first day was very normal. I didn't even realize when it started and when it got over. The last day…. well…….I think its still not the last day (smiles)
Why did you decide to shoot major portions of the film aboard a luxury cruise? That is the script's demand and instead of the usual landscapes etc. I thought it would be something different to shoot the film aboard a cruise.
Were you quite the taskmaster on the sets? Apparently you were really adamant on Kajol doing the salsa though she wasn't very comfortable. Every director tries to get as close to as what he wants. I feel that's not being a taskmaster, its just being honest to your work.
In fact, the Jee Le number would have been really one unforgettable experience to shoot considering even you got hit by one of the dancer's sandals… Could you tell us what happened after that? (smiles) No nothing happened…the poor dancer was so scared that even if it hurt me I behaved as if nothing happened and just moved on
This is one of the first Hindi films where a Heli-cam was used…What purpose did it serve and whose idea was it to bring a Heli-cam into the picture? Technique is always a part of story-telling. It was my idea to use the heli-cam. It was purely to enhance the story-telling and not to show off.
You are an accomplished actor, a producer and a director too now. Which one of these three do you enjoy most and which is really challenging? I think it depends from time to time. I enjoy acting… I also enjoyed directing this film but that doesn't mean I'll keep directing. I don't know when the next thought will come which will inspire me so much, that I decide to direct it.
Your father Veeru Devgan had earlier directed you in Hindustan Ki Kasam…Did you take any tips from him? You take tips from all kinds of directors. Though I have learnt a lot from my father about filmmaking technique since my childhood days, I have worked with many good directors. But yes he does inspire me.
Nysa made her first public appearance during the audio release. How did she manage considering both you and Kajol were neck deep busy with the film? (laughs) Nysa didn't even know that she was making her first public appearance. As for during the making of the film, we managed to spend enough time with her. It's not like we were working throughout the day. Kajol especially was working only 6 - 7 hours in a day so we could manage.
The music of the film is slowly but surely picking up… Your favorite track in the film? You can't ask this to a director (smiles) but I think it will be U Me Aur Hum- the title track by Vishal.
Why did you decide on Vishal Bharadwaj to compose the music? He doesn't really do much music these days… Because I wanted my music to convey the same feeling which my story conveys and that is something which a director like Vishal can understand even better.
You are normally quite reserved and shy but are now going all out promoting your film on T.V. channels, radio stations and what not. How come this sudden change of image? Have you finally realized the importance of promoting and marketing a film in today's times? As an actor I am still shy (smiles) but as a producer, it is my job to go all out and promote the film. In today's times, you have to promote your film…You don't have a choice. It is one of the most important aspects of filmmaking.
Most actors usually appear in one or two episodes of reality shows as celeb judges but you along with Kajol and Tanujaji seem to be permanent judges on Airtel Rock N Roll Family. What made you give your green signal to this show? I am there on the show because I liked the concept. I think it's a beautiful concept which talks about three generations of a family coming together. It talks about Indian values and morals. I liked it so much and moreover it wasn't something which required a lot of time devotion from us. It's just a thirteen week thing so we decided to go ahead and do it.
In fact Aamir said that it was quite a task directing himself…did you also feel the same way? I think if you are clear in your head, it's just a lot of hard work. Otherwise there is no problem.
U Me Aur Hum will be your third release this year. Does it bother you that your earlier two releases Sunday and Halla Bol failed to strike gold at the B.O…? No it doesn't matter… It varies from film to film. Good films work…Period
There have been talks that you have even grown your moustache on a friend's insistence considering you sported one before the release of you recent few successful films (Apaharan, Omkara, Gangajal etc) Are you that superstitious (laughs) I think it's ridiculous to think like this. I have grown my moustache because I like it. However, my daughter does not like it, so I think I'll remove it.
U Me Aur Hum opened with another biggie Krazzy 4 …Would you have rather had a solo release or do these things don't really matter? It really doesn't matter… There's enough space for both the films
In what way is U Me Aur Hum different from the countless loves stories we have witnessed on Hindi cinema. That is for the audience to see and decide. It's honest, it's very positive and in spite of the drama in the film it ends on a very positive note not just for the characters in the film but also for the audience when they come out of the theatres
Lastly how important is this film's success to you? Very important as that's the way you measure appreciation.

Are you happy with the response to U, Me Aur Hum? I am happy. In fact, the critics’ response has been fantastic. I know that probably three out of 100 critics have not really liked my work, but that’s all right. All the people who matter have liked my work. Even the international media has given the film good reviews. If you check on the net, the film has managed to mostly get four stars.
Some critics have said that there was too much of Ajay Devgan in the film … I really don’t know why they said that. In fact, the best character is played by Kajol. Her performance is fantastic in the movie and it’s evident with the kind of response that she’s getting for it. Every character in the film has been portrayed well.
Were you anxious when it didn’t open well? I was anxious on Friday, but then on Saturday it picked up, so I was fine. In fact, distributors had told me that it might not open well because it’s a family film and families only come to watch it during weekends. And thankfully, it has picked up.
Kajol’s father passed away just before the release. It must have affected Kajol and you a lot … It did. In fact, soon after the tragedy, for four or five days, we didn’t know what was happening. We were all in a daze. Even now, when the film has picked up, we don’t know how to react. We really don’t know if we should be happy or sad.
Will you be directing a movie soon? I don’t know. It depends on when the next idea will come. It might take two years or just two days ….
Head: Ajay Devgan gets candid with Tarana Intro: The usually reticent actor opens up about his latest film, Halla Bol, and his first step towards direction
Ajay Devgan is soon to make his directorial debut with the romantic comedy U, Me Aur Hum. The movie is being produced by Kajol and the couple will also star. After playing all kinds of characters, the talented Devgan has two National Awards behind him, and continues to prove himself with each successive release. Halla Bol is currently in theatres, but we got him to rewind to where it all began, with his first release Phool Aur Kante.
Excerpts from a conversation:
Tarana: Do you get psyched at people when they take you seriously? Ajay Devgan: I don’t know why people take me so seriously, considering I don’t take myself seriously.
Tarana: People say you are an introvert and don’t like doing interviews. Ajay Devgan: I am definitely not an introvert, but I am too lazy and often shy to give an interview.
Tarana: I was very confused about the name of your film Halla Bol. For me, when I say ‘Halla Bol’ what first comes to mind is fun, excitement, action. Ajay Devgan: The title means to raise your voice. Besides, there is a lot of fun in the movie.
Tarana: It is said the movie was inspired by the Jessica Lal murder case. Ajay Devgan: The Jessica Lal murder only comprises an episode in the entire film. The story mainly revolves around this character, Sameer Khan, who is an actor struggling to make it big in the industry. There comes a point when he has to make a decision to follow his conscience, with far-reaching consequences.
Tarana: We have heard you shot a part of Halla Bol on the sets of Omkara. Ajay Devgan: We did. There were portions in the movie where we had to show an actor shooting. And, as I was playing a star myself, we shot there.
Tarana: There is a glimpse of Kareena in the film, and she wanted her name listed in the credits. Is that true? Ajay Devgan: I haven’t really heard about it, but Kareena is in a particular scene.
Tarana: You have worked with Raj Kumar Santoshi before, on a film for which you won a National Award. Was it fun working with him again? Ajay Devgan: Yes, it is fun when you are working with a good director who is passionate about his work, who is a writer himself and, above all, is a very good actor. Things become much easier when your director has an insight of what he is expecting from an actor.
Tarana: Does he enact the scene for you? Ajay Devgan: While reading the script, he is simultaneously enacting it. He doesn’t realize this, and does it so well that you get scared about whether you will be able to enact the scene as well as he does.
Tarana: After playing a wide variety of characters, do you think you still need to learn, or have you learnt enough? Ajay Devgan: I think you learn every day. The day you stop learning, you should stop working. It is fun when you keep learning from others’ mistakes, our mistakes. It is an ongoing process.
Tarana: Is there any particular role you think is challenging for you to perform? Ajay Devgan: As you learn everyday, you do get challenging roles where you look at a scene and ask yourself if you will be able to enact it. It happens at every stage of life and I am sure all my colleagues will agree with me.
Tarana: You are considered one of the naughtiest actors in the industry, playing pranks on co-stars. From where do you get these ideas? Ajay Devgan: One has to enjoy one’s work while working. You have to wake up in the morning and say you want to work. We have to add the fun element to our work, which makes it enjoyable.
Tarana: We heard you are a very good cook and have also cooked on sets. Ajay Devgan: No, it’s not true. These are rumours; people just write what they want to. I do cook sometimes, but it has been a long time since I last did it.
Tarana: Tell me something about your directorial debut, U, Me Aur Hum. Ajay Devgan: If one tries to understand the concept, it is very simple. When we talk about love and the person you love, together you make ‘Hum’ — which is very important, and without which love doesn’t make sense.
Tarana: Is being a producer, director and actor in the same film difficult to handle? What was the most difficult? Ajay Devgan: No. I just think if you are clear about your work, nothing is difficult to handle.
Tarana: Was it easy learning to dance? Ajay Devgan: No.
Tarana: In your first movie, Phool Aur Kante, you made an entry standing on two bikes. Do you miss those antics? Ajay Devgan: It was a great entry and I may consider doing it again in future ventures. Then again, it depends on the director.
Tarana: When you first entered the industry, it was said we had a new angry young man to compete against Amitabh Bachchan. Ajay Devgan: It can never be like that. You really can’t compare. I don’t know what the buzz was at the time, but the film worked.
Tarana: When you first began, did you want to be an action hero or a complete actor? Ajay Devgan: Everyone wants to be a complete actor. The movies made during those days were of the same genre. We did 14-15 movies at a stretch, working three shifts a day. That’s the way the industry used to function then. Later, the pattern changed and we started working as per the requirements. Now, the pattern has changed again for the better.
Tarana: Did Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakham change things for you? Did people start perceiving you differently? Ajay Devgan: I think there were three to four movies like Zakham, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Pyar To Hona Hi Tha that were released within a year and a half, that changed people’s perception towards me.
Tarana: Is Omkara a personal favourite of yours? Ajay Devgan: I don’t have any personal favourites because you work as hard in all your films. Some of your films are appreciated, some are not. But it’s your baby because you’ve put in the hard work. You can’t be biased, but there are roles like the one in Zakham that remain with you for life.
Tarana: What if some of your movies aren’t appreciated, like Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag? Ajay Devgan: It’s all part of the game. It depends on you, to learn from your mistakes and not repeat them.
Tarana: Were you excited before the release of Halla Bol? Ajay Devgan: Of course. It is a very good movie, one to be proud about.
Tarana: How was your chemistry with co-star Vidya Balan in the movie? Ajay Devgan: It was fun to work with her as she is a very good actress.
Tarana: She is one of the actresses who has complained about you being very naughty. Did you play any pranks on her? Ajay Devgan: I don’t really remember playing any pranks on her. Tarana: Halla Bol has different facets to it. It’s an action film with a social message. Do you prefer doing movies with a message? Ajay Devgan: It’s a drama on a very entertaining dais with added humour. If we can manage to give people a message to take back, while staying within these boundaries of commercial cinema, it’s a great thing.
Tarana: Could you comment on your movies Raincoat and Cash? Ajay Devgan: About Raincoat, I think the thought was very good but the process was slow. It was something I liked but didn’t expect audiences to watch the movie till the end. It was a very in-depth concept that was stretched for too long and got boring. Cash is a film I don’t recognize because I didn’t complete the movie.
Tarana: You directed your wife for the first time; was she difficult to handle? Ajay Devgan: No, she wasn’t difficult to handle at all. In fact, she was pretty chilled out as she was the producer of the movie as well.
Tarana: How different are the methods of acting between you and your wife. She is known to be a very spontaneous actor. Ajay Devgan: We are both very spontaneous actors and don’t work hard for our pre-shooting schedules.
Tarana: People love Kajol and you as a couple, but what many wonder is how two people with such opposite personalities got together? Ajay Devgan: These are the kind of people that get along; if both tend to be talkative, there will be no one to listen.
Tarana: So Kajol is the one talking and you do the listening? Ajay Devgan: Yes, most people know this is the case.
Tarana: Do you read as much as Kajol does? Ajay Devgan: No, I don’t read much.
Tarana: What kind of father are you to your daughter Nysa? Are you strict? Ajay Devgan: No, she is too small for that. In fact, she is the one who takes charge at home.
Tarana: Erzählen Sie mir etwas über Ihr Regiedebut „U, Me Aur Hum“.
Ajay Devgan: Nein.
Tarana: In Ihrem ersten Film „Phool Aur Kante“ gaben Sie Ihren Einstand auf zwei Motorrädern stehend. Vermissen so etwas?
Ajay Devgan: Ich habe keinen persönlichen Favouriten, weil man in all seinen Filmen hart arbeitet.
